Be sure to check the video description to find links to some of the channels of the friends I mentioned and talked about. Hopefully I'll be on Twitch later today, if all goes well. :) Also, leave a comment/question you'd like me to respond to, either here or in a video. And if you have any ideas for perks I could give to supporters, that would also be good to have.

I've been enjoying your videos from near the beginning, and love to go back and watch the reviews for the games I'm playing. I'm doing grad school right now, so gaming time is hard to come by, and so I'm either playing short games, or games I've played before and can put down for a couple of months if necessary. I'm glad to see lots of things have been moving in the right direction for you, and I do think it is inspiring to see that you can maintain your love of games, positive attitude, while having a relationship and a real job and improving your health. It may not seem like it in the rearview mirror, but all of those things are achievements that took work, and to keep this channel going, it's a lot of accomplishments, and I'm excited to see what's next.

Hey there, Derek. I mostly come to this channel for exactly videos like this. I rewatch your backlog videos as comfort videos every Saturday after my Saturday movie evening and today, instead of those I watched this and it felt comforting as well. I dunno why, man. But I would definitely enjoyed more videos where you are just yourself and talk about stuff you enjoy. Personally, I am not into news and reviews in general, cause I dont have much time to play games anymore and when I do, I already have big backlog that doesnt need expanding. Hope you doing well :)

Hey Derek, ive been a loyal sub since 1100, since the start with your EB review, and youre in my top 3 favorite channels, as a kid growing up i found so much comfort and attachment in JRPG's and it was nice to finally find a channel that focused on them, being a semi niche genre, and ive loved all that youve done so pls keep it up and dont worry too much about numbers or anything like other channels that buren themselves out due to that, in a century it doesnt matter if your videos are relevant in the grand scheme of things so you dont need to make anything like that or epic, your content is amazing and just fine the way it is, just know that at one point, your videos meant the world to a small group of people including me, and the things you discussed and covered are of high value to them. Happy Holidays man

Hey Derek, My name’s Ric-long-time viewer, first-time commenter. I’ve been following your channel for almost five years now, ever since the start of the pandemic. I just wanted to say that this might be my favorite video of yours to date. I’ve always appreciated your honesty and insight into RPGs, but this video felt different-like catching up with an old friend I haven’t heard from in a while. Your authenticity really shines through, and it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to your content. I’m excited to see what the next year brings and will make an effort to interact more, even though being social isn’t exactly my strong suit. That said, I do have a question for you: If you could assemble a dream team to develop a game, who would you pick? And what would the project be-a remake, a remaster, a sequel, or something entirely new? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
@SuperDerek19 күн бұрын
Hey Ric, thank you for the kind words! Making this video definitely _felt_ like catching up after a long while! That's a really fun question! I feel like I'd have to do this Bill and Ted style, using a time machine to snag developers from across time and mash 'em together! I feel like my star-studded cast would basically be everyone from Chrono Trigger, plus the team of Terranigma, teaming up to make an epic Action RPG for the PlayStation 1, with some of the designs also being done by Tatsuya Yoshikawa like for BoF III. :)
@ric_239019 күн бұрын
@@SuperDerek Thanks for your reply, Derek! I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday! That idea sounds incredible, it’s definitely something I’d love to play! BOF 3 was such a phenomenal RPG, and I’m honestly baffled that it’s been left behind for so long. If I could assemble a dream team, I’d put Sakaguchi at the helm, with Tetsuya Takahashi and Kaori Tanaka on board. I’d want the game to have a PS1era vibe, a sci-fi RPG with a touch of fantasy flair. I picture it as a blend between Final Fantasy 6 and Xenogears, but maybe a bit less heavy on the Nietzschean themes hahaha For the music, Mitsuda would absolutely have to handle the score, and for the art, I’d want Hiro Isono, since the style of Secret of Mana has always stood out to me. Thanks again, and I’m looking forward to seeing our community grow!

Absolutely lovely video Derek! I learned quite a lot about you through this little Q&A session. We are scarily similar in a lot of aspects, haha 😅 Thanks for taking my question! I appreciate the response as well. Not having a go to response for something like that is totally fine. Although the channels you talked about also definitely work. I'd be one of those weirdos that wouldn't mind seeing that fireplace vid sometime down the line. What? Biased? Nah, there's no evidence of that 🤣 I know as a relatively "big" channel you unfortunately have to keep the audiences desires above your own to an extent, but as the theme of this video was about balance I definitely think you could incorporate both videos for you AND your audience in a way that feels satisfying to both parties. That's the fun of being a creator, right? Trying to figure out which puzzle pieces go where. Something like that fireplace building video could be part of a tier on your Patreon if you're still feeling uneasy about posting it to your main channel. Or hey, maybe a second (third?) channel strictly dedicated to more personal projects like that? Then you wouldn't really have to worry about the almighty algorithm as much. Hearing that story about your podcast really just shows how fickle the algorithm really is. Even something as "good" as having a video go viral *should* be, if it's for a reason completely outside of our control it can be terribly detrimental overall. I hope you can one day hit that fabled 100k subscribers. You definitely have the personality and the level of talent to reach that goal (despite what you may personally think 😅) you have the experience and are already over halfway there. It's just a matter of dedication and hard work and the rest will happen naturally 💪 Good luck with your dream of creating a more open/inviting place for people. It's a lofty goal that can definitely feel impossible in today's climate but nothing would be worth fighting for if it were easy. Wish you and your wife nothing but the best. Can't wait to see what you've got in store for the future!

Honestly I think the best answer to the question of getting out of the burnout rut is to stop worrying about what you "should" be doing with your time. If you ever start doing something while thinking "well this is what I should be doing, since I normally do this..." You're in the wrong headspace entirely. Go out and do something else for a while and come back to games as a reward for your efforts, even if only for a short amount of time. Kinda wanna make a video on this very topic.

Up until recently I lived in norfolk, ne for about 20 years and as a long time collector of many things, I definitely agree on how hard that is to do in small Midwest towns. Most of my collecting involved driving 2 hours away. I have more access now that we live in Omaha but it still seems smaller than what seems to be available on the coasts. We lucked out and had a comic shop for a number of years that did card games and some retro video games. Ah the good old days. Otherwise most of my local finds were pawnshops

Dang, you look cool, like you're in Tombstone. I have wondered if my occasional impulse to start doing videos or stream, is just for me to tackle my backlog, but also because I need to not feel as if my own experience with the game is not "wasted" somehow (edit: when it should not be wasted because my experience is still my experience with it, and that's good enough and all I ever want after all). And so I wonder if others feel this way, and as a result, there are all these video game videos on KZbin. I must have thousands bookmarked, and I will never be able to get through them all, I fast-forward through a lot lately, it helps, but anyone who has an accent, I can't fast-forward or else I can't understand them at all, and I either turn it off, or listen anyway, depending on how important it can be. Then, I want to be able to see their footage of the game, so can't just listen to them as would allow me to accomplish getting their insights or whatever WHILE playing my own game... But I can't listen to all the podcasts anymore, but this vlog here, I feel I could listen to, wanted to hear what brutal honesty was in it. Been listening to radio shows and Roseanne before this, while playing games, trying to get the damn green tail in ff4 After Years 3d right now. Please everyone, give me your Spirit Bomb energy of luck so I can get these item drops in this game and I can move on with life. Or I can just stop being an achievement whore, and just beat the game, then continue my playthroughs of ff10 and Grandia and Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness which while having some annoying aspects I actually had a great time with yesterday. And Skyrim. I guess you just play a game because you want to escape to it. And that's good enough. A game's time is a game's time. Sad collecting has to clash with this natural spontaneous draw towards a certain game, at times, but it is nice when you can just play a game because you want to feel the experience. Like being all monkeys with rifles and shooting each other, they got a game for it, though it may be a crappy game, it still gets you some experience of it, in some capacity. And so it's all the happy and fond memory you need.

How do you feel about difficulty in JRPGs? Are there any games that you play on harder difficulties for greater satisfaction? Thoughts on the souls series?
@SuperDerek21 күн бұрын
I think over time, developers have done a good job of giving players the options to choose their own difficulty. If you can't steamroll a boss, go do some optional side content and get some super cool gear, that way you can beat the boss. To an extend, RPGs have always done this, but it's more prevalent now. And also giving people difficulty choices helps. Older games can sometimes be rough around the edges because developers failed to play-test them properly. (Looking at you, Dragon Warrior II on NES...)

I think most of us old-school gamers are pretty introverted characters if you will? But I think the name super Derek is a lot better than what I came up with for my first PS3 handle, which I made one day when I was under the effects of the wacky Tobacki, and as such, I thought it was funny.. now I just wish Sony would let you change your gamer tag exactly in the same way that Microsoft does where you don't lose anything like for example all the DLC that they "Warn you against" if you decide to change your PSN name! Either way, I discovered your channel whenever happy console gamer had your on, and it's because of characters like him and you that keeps my love of RPG video games, alive and well!! When I was a kid I couldn't stand playing RPG because I didn't have the attention for it... in my later years, my later adult years it is all I like to play!! RPG's and games with really great narratives? Aside from some of the stuff that I have always loved like racing simulation, arcade racing and beat em ups & Fighting Games..

Aw man, I can't imagine if I had to be stuck with my oldest handles from my youth. Sony really ought to have a system in-place to allow people to change their display names, or migrate to new handles. Hanging out with HCG a few times was truly a turning point for me, can't thank him enough for taking me under his wing at a really crucial point in my life. Do you think its a good idea to do game reviews that doesn't dive much in the story?
@SuperDerek21 күн бұрын
I prefer to talk about maybe the first couple of hours in specifics, in order to give people an idea of the premise of the game, then speak more broadly or generally about how well it did at accomplishing its intended effect overall, to let you know if it was good, without spoiling key plot points. Personally, I don't think my reviews should recap a game's story, because I'm making these videos usually for people who haven't played it yet.

You almost certainly would cause he’s super annoying no offense to him it’s just I only watch him when there’s a dearth of content. You’re right that the algorithm made you disappear. This is my first time coming back in a long time. I follow so many channels. It’s very easy for them to get lost in the shuffle. I’m an all-day KZbinr.

I have a feeling our views on politics differ a bit. Part of me hates that you feel the need to not say how you feel. Part of me is grateful.

When it comes to political differences, I like to think that we all mostly _want_ the same thing -- a society that enables people to find and achieve happiness, provide for themselves and their families, provide some sense of safety and stability, and to otherwise gets out of the way. We agree mostly on the broad strokes. It's the fine details of _how_ to accomplish these things that we differ. We've got more in common than we often think. :)

A channel about making stuff, like props, is not the same thing as a channel about video games. No offense but if you're making videos and you want people to watch them, then it makes sense to cater to what they might want to watch. This has always been the case. Yes, youtube algorithms are kind of dumb and add another layer to things, but if you want people to watch you then it is important to empathize with the people who are watching. Otherwise, you can just do stuff on your own and do what you want to do without worrying about what people think.

Make the new content. Maybe break those videos down to 20 min or less and release them only on specific days. Just thinking out loud.

On a scale of 5-10 how disappointed are you with Eiyuden Chronicle? I'm giving it a 10 for disappointment. The game is so poorly made that a progress halting glitch has made my playthrough unfinishable. Even with their worthless patches it can't be fixed. I have deleted the game, deleted the save data, and the game is going to my local game store to get sold. Gone from the collection! 🔥
