I'm a very old guy with 4 grandchildren, 3 in college and 1 a year out of college. When I watch your videos it helps me to understand what the young people of today are dealing with, which is unrelated to my life experiences. I am skeptical, suspicious by nature, and I'm pleased to see that your emphasis on scams is finding an audience. I almost never disagree with your skewering of predatory industries and practices, and recommend selected videos of yours to the grandchildren, when they are in a situation in which your advice could help out. Besides you are relatable in a way that I can't be. I wouldn't fret over an increased geezer audience. We just think the world has gone to hell in a handbasket, and are happy to see a young person with the same beefs.
@LynsAlteredArts7 ай бұрын
I’m a boomer also and I’ve always wondered what a handbasket was and why you need one to go to hell. If you like scam videos you will probably love Hannah Alonzo, she specifically focuses on MLM‘s and influencers.
@lewis25537 ай бұрын
@@LynsAlteredArtsI'm in my late 60s. You see handbaskets in places like Foodland, Dollar Tree, or farmers markets for shopping or carrying fruit or vegetables. They're usually made of plastic or other stuff that would burn up quickly and offer no protection to their contents (as opposed to the protection offered by Jesus Christ). I think the saying about going to hell in a handbasket gained popularity back when George Utley, said as probably the funniest line in a special episode of the otherwise BORING Bob Newhart show. What made it so funny was hearing it roll out of the mouth of the normally gentle, soft-spoken George. And, no, you don't have to have a handbasket to go THERE! 😬
@LynsAlteredArts7 ай бұрын
@@lewis2553 That’s funny but we just call it a basket. Where I live we call a shopping cart a shopping cart, and I know other parts of the country call it a buggy, so probably a regional thing. I’m thinking the saying must be older than that because I seem to remember my parents saying it long before Bob Newhart and long before those baskets were in markets. I love Bob Newhart, love him, love him. I’m going to have to go watch some old Bob Newhart shows.
@lewis25537 ай бұрын

"Stay out of debt' is excellent advice. I let my credit card debt get away from me once many years ago and it took me years of playing "musical chairs" with various cards, transferring the balances over and over to cards with lower interest rates, to dig myself out. Once I did, though, I swore "never again" and I never have. Such a relief! Some good advice I read from some rich dude back around that same time: "There are two types of people in the world (aren't there always?).....those who understand interest and collect it and those who don't and pay it."

I'm a boomer. The biggest life changer for us in the last 20 years was our getting control over our finances. I rarely disagree with you on that topic. One thing that has come out of our financial situation is that I don't worry about what others think about me and when someone asks me a question about finances, I tell the truth and I think you do the same. I don't expect other people to think or act like me and most of my fellow boomers are of the same mindset. There are jerks of all ages out there. Nice one! I really can't believe that people presume the right to make such personal and judgemental comments about things that are none of their business. What you choose to share is our privilege, not a right. You absolutely have a right to your private life staying just that, private. As an 'over double 30', I apologise for the nasty trolls who behave so badly. Personally, I really enjoy a real person sharing their journey, the 'perfect people' are much less interesting and genuine. I love your 'scam' videos, and see them as you speaking truth to consumer society and making us all more aware of the way in which the marketers try to shape us all into behaving as they would have us act. I have long seen the adverts on TV as ways of reminding me how many things I just don't need in life. Keep going, Nicole, you are great!

What the FOMO question people seem to miss is that being frugal with respect to things that are not terribly important to a person is a major part of what affords them the money, and the liberty that the money enables, to do the things they really do want to do and go places they really do want to go without having to scrimp on those items. It's just a matter of intelligent resource allocation.

It's a simulacrum of human relationships that has only been around for 15-20 years, and I think a lot of people haven't quit adapted to it. I guess for some the simulacrum is so convincing that they actually start to believe they have, or could have, a personal relationship with the content creator. I don't know. But it is interesting.
