Answering Your Questions About Van Life & My Personal Situation

I've just watched this back and realised I mis-understood one of the questions. It said: If you got married would you have the honeymoon in the van? My tired brain read it as: would you have the ceremony in the van!
The answer is: Probably not, I'd like to have the honeymoon somewhere like Vegas and stay in a nice hotel.

I brought a 22 year old motor home. A 2 birth, built on a Boxer chassis. I travel all the time and free park. I love it. When I was young and my husband was alive. We owned 5 V.W. Combies. Over the years. But now over 70. I cant crawl around in a van. Motor homes have a bathroom and I have a full kitchen. I just love it. I have a house but happier in my motor home.

Hi James- I am really enjoying your channel. 😊 My husband & I live off-grid & have for a year now. We're not youngsters (ha), but in 2019-2020 our life "spoke" quite clearly and we listened and acted. We've had more conversations about poop the last year than I ever thought possible! We don't have kids, so we missed the opportunity to talk about it then. At the moment I find "bathrooming," showering & trying to survive the cold the most difficult parts. We are not near any significant towns or cities & having that infrastructure could be helpful (and maybe comforting). On the other hand we are surrounded by acres of peaceful beauty & stillness and that makes my soul sing. So all of this by way of asking you what is the "unit" you are mentioning? I'm tempted to think it's what we would call a storage unit in the US but there is no way you could use a toilet or do office work or anything like that in a storage unit here in the US. I wish you continued success on your channel. 🙏

Jane: yes the unit is a storage unit - it can be seen in one of his videos. Some have a toilet and some don't, depends what you want to pay for. The UK is much smaller than USA (Ha Ha ! But it's something you don't appreciate unless you've been there). I have been to USA so I understand it's vastness. In the UK you can travel from top to bottom usually in two or three stages and it will take two days, but James lives almost in the middle (more north than south) and then you have to consider the petrol costs. I'm glad you are enjoying your peaceful life 💟

James I watched your first video a few weeks after you posted it as I watch a lot of van life videos it just popped up and at first I thought ahh this is just another boring van life youtuber but I have to say I stuck with it as we were in similar situations and backgrounds and I have to say I'm glad I did because the content you produce is unique. It's so interesting and fun and most of all you and Helen are so open and honest. I'm not surprised you have more fans as nobody on KZbin is doing what you are doing. You my number one favorite channel and apart from a few car fixing up KZbin channels I don't watch much van lifers as its boring bollox and they copy each other. Hello I lived in a large motorhome for a year 10 years ago parking on the streets and although it was comfortable I don't recommend it People are always suspicious and bother you even though it was modern and expensive plus difficult to blend in and parking in supermarkets when shopping takes up 2 spaces

I watched to the bitter end 🤣 . My missus can't understand what I see in your channel. I think the truth is, I am envious of your life and its a form of escapism when I watch you. understand the bill anxiety. i've come close to an itinerant life style like you but i wouldn't handle it as well. Especially in the winter lol. Just once you do get more success James with YT, don't allow it too change you. especially as your openness and honesty is what people like. Once I got a quadrupelling of my monthly income I noticed a shift in my own psychology, I became less empathic to others, so I had to fight against this. Ey up, I'm living full time in my Transit. I've given up renting flats because they're crap, covered in black mold and in a right state. I've got to find an accommodation address yet for post, but I've no intention of living in a crappy flat again. You do get problems in a van. Recently my central locking failed and I couldn't get any of the other doors open apart from the driver's door. To get in the back, I had to push the seat forward, folld the seat back over the steering wheel, climb onto the battery and climb over half of a bulkhead wall. It was bloody ridiculous, at one point I had an audience. Garages didn't want to tackle it. I struggled for two sodding weeks and then one evening I pulled up in Castleton and the bloody doors unlocked by themselves except for the sliding side door, which refuses to budge. Houses are a liability and I'm hoping that this van will see me out because I can't afford another one. Life on the road is so much better and nobody knows where you are.

I used to own Maddy (Max & Paddy) the Phoenix Nights motorhome. I had her and enjoyed her for 5 years and sold her in 2021. She's on her 3rd owner since me. She sadly did become a money pit. Lots of fun tho

I came across van life videos by accident and find yours more honest and upfront compared with others that come with headline titles like attacked last night in the van for clickbait turns out they left the window open overnight and an insect bit them what a joke. I would like to think that you and Helen are awake to what's planned for the UK in the future with net zero stuff and buying a house in the future would be a no no. What about using your time and resources to perhaps look at learning to ⛵ and adventures to follow and aim more at going off grid.

Great name for the van from your daughter, Door-o-thy sounds aptly Yorkshire! You are so right about most people being decent, Billy Connolly will tell you that. You've almost quoted him from his very last travel documentary about how politicians could learn a thing or two about talking to people. As a Trade Plate vehicle delivery driver, I've hitchhiked all around the country over the last 27 years, and have had some great lifts off all sorts of interesting people. From young and old, male and female and from every race and creed, rich and poor. And most are happy to talk, and have even gone out of their way to drop me off at my collection point. So there's still hope for the human race.

@@bythecurb Don't tell me you've met those other Van Lifers The ExPawers, and had someone donate a free Fiat Ducato to you, cos that was gonna be my next suggestion! You said you'd like an upgrade, and It certainly makes for great content having an anonymous benefactor help out when their 30 year old camper goes kaput. Then there's that Canadian Chrome Valdez from VanCityVanLife who's managed a Go Fund Me page to buy a terminally ill amputee mate of his called Jeffie Bear a customised Camper Van. But what am I saying? Surely being a Van Lifer you probably know all this, or is it like Coronation Street and EastEnders, where you're aware of each others existence but are contractually obliged to not engage?.......I think I might have misunderstood the concept of " needs to get out more"!

ey up x great to hear some questions answered x im fairly new to your channel but for me i think its yours and helens honesty and chemistry that make the channel great and theres so many channels that just try to dramatise everything so you both make a refreshing change x

James I think it would be good watching, if you where to do a van conversion it would grow your channel even more in my opinion, look for to watching what ever you decide, may drop on you a some point.
