This 1953 film from the Swiss Federation of Watch Manufacturers gives tips for salesmen that will help them assure customers and successfully sell fine Swiss watches. The film opens with a shot of an American town’s main street. People window shop along a street. Women help customers at a department store. People look in at a jewelry store watch display (01:30). Inside the store, a woman approaches a salesman to discuss purchasing a watch. The salesman shows the woman several different watches. A woman holds a dress up to her to size it by eye. The film shows the inside of a watch (04:23). Viewers see the precision machines used to make watches. A craftsman assembles a watch (04:56). A rotating display case shows a variety of fine Swiss watches (05:14). Another salesman shows a male customer a watch (06:21). The first salesman presents a very slim dress watch to the customer. A man winds his watch as he gets ready for work in the morning (08:31). He is then shown tinkering with his watch (08:55). There is a close-up shot of a watch jewel (09:38), a synthetic stone used to protect the moving parts of a watch. A diagram shows where the watch jewels are located (10:17). The film shows different types of watch owners, including a doctor, a pilot, an engineer, and a cameraman (11:32). The salesman shows the woman a versatile, durable watch (12:07); there is a clip of a woman wearing the watch while doing dishes and accidentally submerging the watch in the sink. Next, viewers see the gears of a self-winding watch (13:10). The salesman talks to the customer about their service department. In the service department, a craftsman works on repairing a watch (14:20). The film concludes with the female customer walking out of the jewelry store after purchasing a watch.

Imagine a time when hucksters and shucksters could make a decent living. And when jewelry stores had foot traffic in small towns.

From the lingo you would think they are buying a car, or house. :)

Many watches cost more than a car or house, but even a moderately priced watch can outlast a car

So many things are so much better these days! My watches all keep time to levels that were unimaginable back then. My car doesn't require "tune ups" once or twice every year. I no longer have to pay extra for long distance calls and I have instant access to practically every song ever recorded (not to mention, books, movies, and vast stores of information). And life is so much better for minorities, too (did you notice there was not a single minority represented in this commercial?).

Your life sounds wonderful... How about reviewing this media and enjoy it for what it is, an early 50's advert and no I usually do not keep a "scorecard" to list how many of this or that kind of Human is on the film, it does not matter Peace.

@@frenchie6189 All the things I mentioned apply to a great many people, not just me (but you knew that before you replied to my comment). As for reviewing the media for what it is, OK: It's a commercial for watches. The intended audience is affluent white people. It looks pretty typical of promotional media made during that era. The acting is acceptable for the purpose.

Better get ready for rose-tinted glasses brigade who claim that things were so much better then.

Well, let's see. If they lived in middle America where there were no "minorities" (which means there are less of them, right?).... then, your statement makes no sense. Stop judging other times and places based on your very, very limited experience in time and space. Learn, but don't sit in judgement unless you were ACTUALLY there.

@@videodistro Well, I did grow up in rural America. And we had people of a few different races/cultures living in our small town. Basques, Chinese, Filipinos, Mexicans. I think I have a pretty sensible context for the things I'm saying.
