A friend has a MVMT watch (and still wears it). When he showed it to me, I saw something flying around in the watch and I got confused for a second - until he held his wrist still for a moment and I realized IT WAS THE HOUR MARKERS! Several (at least 4 or 5) of them had fallen off and he was like "Oh yeah, it's been like that for a few months now. They must have fallen off when I accidentally knocked the watch against the table or something". I swear I am not a watch snob but I haven't brought the topic up with him ever again.

If they can do it for under £200, why can't Hublot on a watch for £10k plus?

From the name, the logo and the advertising, they're clearly a brand/marketing lead company who are doing exactly what you say. Hey Watchfinder, something that should be noted about these MVMT watches (and what makes them such a ripoff) is that while their ads look sleek and nice, the watches fall apart in the details and you REALLY start to notice all the deficiencies when you get one in person. Sizing completely off from the style of the watch, super flat details, quartz modules that are obviously way too small for the case size, awful QC issues, subpar straps and bracelets, and so on. If these watches were $50 or less that'd be fine. But paying $150 and up on these? An absolute rip-off.

There are sub-150€/$ proper brand Swiss-made watches available, so paying $150 for MVMTs is ridiculous. I've bought excellent Wenger watches for my nieces and nephews which I've got on discount for even under €100 and list price under €150 (same in dollars). Wenger are reliable Swiss-made watches from the Victorinox-owned original Swiss army knife brand, made with really good quality control, worldwide 3 year warranty, service centres worldwide. You can even get automatic models from them for under $500. Casios and Seikos can be had for well under €100. The watch industry isn't exactly big on trying new things and while Hublot is overpriced, at least they aren't releasing the same dive watch over and over again like most other brands do. When releasing the same watch but with a yellow dial is considered a mind blowing change, you know there's a certain level of stagnancy in the industry.

The very wrong thing these fashion watches is that they claim themselves to be luxurious and they charge a lot for a quartz movements that are priced very low. The quality control is also worse.

Yep. They just have a bit more clever marketing. Infuriates me when I see people wearing Daniel Wellingtons, because it's just a complete waste of money. For the price of 1 (one) Daniel Wellington watch you can buy: Anywhere between 6 and 10 Casios in various styles to suit all purposes and fashions, or Maybe 2 Orient watches, with in house automatic calibres and sapphire crystals. Thinking maybe a Kamasu and a Bambino, or 1 relatively high quality Swiss quartz watch such as the OG Tissot PRX.
@smashexentertainment6762 жыл бұрын
Nearly all fashion and instagram watches are outsourced blanks from China 3-15 bucks a piece with zero original design. They just slap their brand on a dial and sell it for 1000%+. Most of fashion brands even buy same blanks with little to no modifications. If you look at aliexpress, you can often find exact copies with Chinese brand on a dial. And quality control ends at Chinese factory where they make 100 if not 1000 watches a day and take market by quantity, not quality. You can probably ask to replace your broken fashion watch 10 times for free and still be ripped off. At this point you'll be technically paying much less for a Rolex on a grey market. Kinda legal scam if you ask me.

Just as a bit on nit-picky aside, carbon fibre is specifically the woven stuff that was compared to a picnic basket (in my opinion, it can be done well, it just tends to look a bit tacky in the way it tends to be used), the stuff that you liked is called forged carbon, which is made in a different way. Not trying to be obnoxious, just trying to inform, if anyone is interested in these materials like I am

The Invicta boutique in Times Square, which you show in a photo, *always* has an offer like "buy two get one free" on the video display sign above the door. Inside they try to look all cool and suave, but even before walking in one thinks "if they're that good, why are they offering that deal?" And yes, other than the blatant ripoff designs they seem to try to focus on big, chunky, gaudy watches for the set of people who want a big, chunky, gaudy watch. (My ex boss really wanted one of those. Fortunately the one he was wearing to work was on the smaller end of big and not particularly chunky and not very gaudy and I liked it and that got me into watches. It inspired me to buy one that was less chunky and less gaudy. It is big though.)

I've never handled an MVMT...but, it does sound rather expensive for what you're getting. My gateway watches were Parnis GMT's....and they were a lot of watch for only $120AUD. Still are, I think. I doubt I'll ever wear them again...and they live in the cupboard, in their boxes. But, I respect them.

That Hublot La Ferrari watch looks like it's trying to recreate the experience of looking at the engine in a mid-engine supercar (like a Ferrari) but in watch form. I think they did a pretty good job of designing a watch to look like a car engine.

The bezel screws on Hublot watches really annoy me a HUGE amount (I hate that they're not aligned) but their use of materials is nice, their sapphire and ceramic pieces are interesting

Are you sure about the lum on the MVMT recycled Ocean plastic watch? Have you had it in hand or just going by the advertising on their website? Lum is one of the things most often over promised and under applied?

They(MVMT)put chronograph in a watch which doesn’t have any tachymeter on the bezel, its just an awful design. In the case of Hublot.. if the price will be same with tissot and Seiko I think it will be justifiable.

As a titanium only guy I appreciate that Hublot makes lots of models in titanium but nothing else about them excites me. For the money I could have fine pieces from GS, Omega, etc.

Their case screws aren't even alligned properly, which brand asks over 10k for a 700 dollar watch and doesn't even bother alligning the screws? There's literally nothing positive to say about that brand.
@MH-im4oh2 жыл бұрын
@@Kciroy I believe the screws are part of the brand recognition, otherwise, they’re just copying AP. They maybe overpriced, but honestly, some of them don’t look boring at all. I’ll pick them as my daily than a boring Rolex.
@50Stang872 жыл бұрын
@@Kciroy No one can line up a screw perfectly and have it torqued down not Cartier or AP! AP uses hex bolt and a nut/retainer that you can't see that is not lined up but torqued. My point in calling this out that it is not a quality issue or capability issues just a design decision. I can appreciate you prefer the other's design though.

MVMT is 100% marketing. They literally call themselves "Premium" when they're clearly not. They ape Bauhaus styling used on vintage high end watches. They're the same as something like a Michael Kors watch, which is a cheap quarts movement in a piece of cheaply made Chinese imported dress jewelry. The irony is that Movado, who MVMT is obviously trying copy, bought them out. Honestly, there's more engineering and innovation in a Apple Watch than MVMT. Much like Diesel, Hublot is a bit gaudy for many people's tastes but they at least bring some interesting engineering innovation to the watch making world. Just because I wouldn't personally buy or wear one, doesn't mean I don't respect the engineering and innovation. Invicta is a good gateway drug to good watches. Again, like Diesel, they can be very gaudy, but they also make nicer items and use decent movements. I'd say Fossil is somewhere in the middle of MVMT and Invicta. Yes, they have watches that are too expensive for the cheap quartz movement in them, but they also make nice mechanical watches as well. They're also a decent gateway drug to "real" watches.

Honestly there’s more engineering and innovation in an Apple watch than in any other watch, we still don’t buy watch for that though, we’re fascinated by the mechanical part of them
@andrewkarsten52682 жыл бұрын
Every watch I own right now is a Fossil. I had one I received as a gift when I was young, and it's stood the test of time. I've done cement work with it, fallen on my skateboard and bike, taken showers, just absolutely abused it. I got it 10 years ago. It still works, I've only had to change the battery. On the other hand, I've received two pulsars as a gift, and neither lasted more than a month. One had the hands fall off, and the other had the strap break. I've also owned a seiko, and it was the same story as the pulsar. I bought other fossils, and a few of them are mechanical watches. These are the first mechanical watches I've owned, but I figure if these are anything like first fossil I got, they're going to last a good bit. They're also cheap enough that it's not really a risk on my part. Point is, I love fossil.

If I see a lot of misspellings this leaves me an impression that they are not detailed oriented and lack quality. I am a very picky consumer and if I see these type of things I no longer trust the brand. Company culture is very important and when I see lack of attention to details then usually this means there are corners that are being cut which impacts quality!

... which is especially relevant for watches, which by their nature are all about details (like the mastery of detail that is required for accurate measurement of time).

I think the only people who are defending Hublot are the one who owns them or wish to own one and they hate when people are calling out brand openly on how they're ripping off people with really bad designs and the movements that doesn't even cost 1% of their price.
