all your videos are so helpful. with dyes, once I have soaked an item in a dye bath, can I continue to use the same bath for other items? If I still have some left over, can I cover it and use it the next day etc? It won't be hot any more but I could heat it again...would that work?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
So one bottle (or packet) of dye will dye about 2 lbs. of fabric. After that, you will start to see less saturation in your color. So, that doesn't mean that you can't use it until the color wears out, but you are just not going to get consistent results.

Will certain dyes still leech color even after you used the rit Colorsafe fixative? I dyed some socks, underwear and a tshrit with the red Rit dye. I used the bucket method on both the dye and fixative baths with hot water as the directions say. When I went to wash the items after the fixative bath in warm water after rinsing them under cold running water, I noticed it still turned the wash water color. Even after using 2 bottles of fixative.

I don't care if the color fades, but I don't want it to run on other clothes. Do I need to fix the dyemore?
@onlinefabricstore2 жыл бұрын
Usually, you don't need to use fixative with dyemore, however, that is based off of the material your garment is made out of. Since you are using dyemore on cotton, you may want to use the fixative. It will help keep the color stay for longer and make it more vibrant.

Hi! Lovely video! I have a question: each and every time I dye clothing, with all purpose or synthetic dye, the actual thread that goes through the pieced of fabric remains undyed. I hate how it looks afterwards, very patchwork-like. How can one make sure that the thread seams are also dyed? Thanks!
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
Your best bet would be to use the dye more for synthetic materials and really hot water. It is really tough to tell because usually the thread is not listed in the fiber contents.
@rebecca_stone2 жыл бұрын
Agree - this used to drive me bananas. You may not be adding enough heat, or enough dye. Generally the thread in most clothes is 100% polyester and will not pick up dye easily. The one time I got a perfect result when dyeing jeans (from tan to very deep chocolate brown) was to use one bottle of all-purpose Rit dye in dark brown, and a bottle of synthetic Rit dye in dark brown. I dyed the jeans in the washing machine at 60 degrees Celsius with this mix and both the jeans fabric (cotton-based corduroy) AND stitching dyed perfectly dark brown. I hope this helps you. :)

I bought a 32 Quart aka 31 Liter aluminum pot at Walmart for $32 - I just saw that aluminum can become pitted by the salt so use a pot that you don't care about. I will follow the synthetic instructions with high heat just under boiling about 195 F and stir for 1 hour.

Thanks for the video :) I understand that you should use Dyemore with synthetics if it's 35%+ (that's a given) and regular with cotton/naturals. It's easy to understand why you need the dyemore for synthetics but no one has mentioned why you shouldn't use it on cottons? I would think the dyemore would be a stronger dye? and maybe actually do a better job on cotton? I would appriecate any that knows the answers to Please inform me. I wanted to dye some cotton but thought that I would not be using the whole bottle of dye up, so I should buy the Dyemore, so I could use it on other small items later on.
@Archaneus2 жыл бұрын
Dyemore is not "stronger" it's a different chemical process. The actual chemical process used for synthetics doesn't work as well on natural fibers. What this amounts to is if you use Dyemore on natural fabrics, it will actually dye much lighter than the standard dye.

I have a pop-up camper that has the original curtains, which are currently light brown/beige. I would like to dye them teal. I have not been able to find what the fiber content is. It is a tightly woven canvas, medium thickness. I am wondering if it would be worth trying to strip the color that is there or just dying it? I think there are a total of 9 panels, and one is much larger than the others. An article about a pop up renivation mentioned buying 15 yards of fabric to redo curtains if that helps any for my next question. I saw on a dying tutorial about putting all the bottles of dye together and dividing from there.I plan to dye in my top-loader washing machine. Should the dye be divided evenly by loads or by percent of total amount of curtain is in that particular load? In case my last question didn't make sense, let's say one load, A, has two panels, each is two feet by three feet. Then let's say there is another load, B, that is one panel which is 9 feet by 7 feet. Would it be better to do same everything including water, amount of dye, amount of soap for each load or should I put more dye in load B since it is more material?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
I would say that if you are looking to get a really saturated teal you will want to strip as much color out of the material before hand (using rit color remover - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm ) As for the second half of your question, your load B should have more dye since there is more material. You should be using one bottle of dye for ever 2 lbs of material or if you are using powder dye, you will need one box per 1 lb of material.

@onlinefabricstore2 жыл бұрын
Because dyeing requires heat, it may shrink the fabric. There is also probably a protective coating on the fabric that would be washed off if machine washed or dyed. This can also change the surface texture of the fabric. It's possible your curtains could be dyed nicely, but whenever you dye anything, there's a chance it could come out bad. If there's a curtain you could spare, I'd suggest washing it in hot water first to see if it shrinks too much. If it comes out OK, you can try using Rit DyeMore Synthetic Dye which will dye both synthetic and natural fibers. Good luck!

Okay, start here. We have a Ombre Dye tutorial (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4HTep6Od9Wag9E) Check that out and see if that is what you are interested in doing. Then you are going to want to pick out your colors. When you are purchasing, I would get about 2 times more than you think you will need, and also order some muslin or a similar cheep fabric (that you can test the technique on) Then when that comes in you are going to want to do a couple of test runs on the muslin to nail down what you want it to look like. I would recommend kind of sketching it out on a piece of paper, and then dying. There is going to be a learning curve, so that is why I would try it on a cheep fabric first. Then when you are happy with the look that you are getting, make a new dye bath and dye your rug!

I want to dye the white part of a black and white striped hoodie, blue. Will the blue dye affect the black part of the hoodie or just the white part?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
Probably not! It could give the black a little bit of a blue hue, but you can't dye something dark lighter. So this should work well for you!

Thanks for all the good tips! I have a dress that's 95% cotton, 5% spandex. Will it take to the dye since it has a bit of spandex? If so, which dye works best, and should I use a stovetop, bucket, or washing machine method? Thanks again!
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
I would probably use All Purpose. Dye More isn't going to dye the spandex anyways. When you are looking at the garment, you probably won't be able to tell that a few threads aren't dyed. Good luck!

Oh and I missed the second half of your question.. It is personal preference. I prefer dying in the washing machine because it is a whole lot easier, but it is fun to do over the stove and you have a little more control over the water temp. if you are concerned about shrinking the shirt.

Thanks for the video! Would it work if I dye polyester facbric with oil stains?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
try taking out the oil stains first. I swear by dawn dish soap (the one with the duck on the bottle) It cuts grease like you could not even believe.

I dyed some cotton fabric a dark green with all purpose rit and it came out a faded grey/green. I had vinegar and salt in the dye bath. I use how water and I had it in the dye bath for 30 minutes. Is there any recommendations for having the color not fade out and how to neutralize the grey.
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend using a more saturated dye bath. And make sure that you use the RIT color stay fixative! It's really important. Also, If your fabric is 100% cotton, you only need to use salt.

I have a cardigan I bought from Target that I am wanting to dye a powder blue. It’s 68% cotton, 16% Recycled Polyester, 15% Acrylic and 1% Spandex. What would you recommend?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
You are going to want to use RIT Dye More. You can find it here (dye more comes in more limited colors, so you will want to dilute the dye) - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-dyemore-liquid-synthetic-fiber-dye-sapphire-blue-.htm

I have a bleach spot that I can't remove. So I would like to dye the whole outfit. Will the bleach spot then be darker then the rest of the garment once dyed? How can I avoid that from happening?
@onlinefabricstore2 жыл бұрын
Bleach can damage the fibers of the fabric so sometimes it doesn't dye the same as the rest of the fabric (usually it's lighter), but other times it's fine or just slightly off. If you do dye it, I would recommend using Rit Color Remover first to get the fabric as uniform as possible before dyeing. Unfortunately, there's no way to really know how it's going to turn out until you do it! Good luck!

Does re dyed clothes using rit dye. All purpose doesnt fade that fast? Unline other. Cheap powder fast dyes?
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I am so sorry, I don't think I understand your question.. You can absolutely dye clothing that has already been dyed. While App Purpose Dye is not permanent, it will last a really long time especially if you are using the dye fixative and washing with cold water every time you wash your garment (I also recommend washing as infrequently as you can.) Please let me know if you have any other questions.

What can I use to make prints on the solid colors I saw a tutorial and they were using some type of clear liquid and then they dipped it in a full stock of celery and it made the perfect print for a rose
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
I guess I am not sure what project you are referring to.. What is coming to my mind is a method called Batik dying, here is our tutorial - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWWwc4WQfrarjqs You might be talking about a tie dying technique, and I am no professional there, so I would say that your best bet would be to find more channels that specialize in that type of dying. I would stray away from anything like the five minute craft style videos though because I do find that a lot of the projects that channels like that put out short form content in long videos on FB or YT are often not real. I see more often than not that the projects that they put out there will not work. (think the channels that put a cut rose in a banana and then say a rose bush grew from the cutting, it just will not work) I can not say for sure, but putting something in a celery stock seems like it would not product the results that you are speaking about. I could be wrong, but I am super weary with projects like that because "movie magic" is the real trick, not the project itself.

If I wanted to dye some linen curtains like a muted olive green color, how would I do that?
@onlinefabricstore2 жыл бұрын
We dyed a sample of 100% linen fabric in this tutorial and it dyed great! (See the results near the bottom of the page) www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/rit-all-purpose-fabric-dye/ In order to dye something as large as curtains, you probably won't be able to do it on the stove but it should still work with very hot tap water and/or boiling water in a large plastic tub. Make sure that there's enough space to move it around easily and keep it moving the entire time you're dyeing it so it will dye evenly. Good luck!
