I think the starting point for figuring out your tire wear problems is a CAT scale. It is time to go deep into the weight calculations and make sure that your numbers look good before investing in new tires and alignments and axel adjustments. Figure out if your truck payload, GVWR, and rear axel ratings are within range. And, make sure your rig is within the GVWR. It is time. Do the math!

100% here Hanks.....you really need to figure how much weight you have on each axle to make sure you are not overloading one of them. CAT scales are a good thing. Hopefully you can get all of this sorted out.

What @jvogel431 says. You've been chasing a problem for a long time now without starting at the first step, and the first step is the easiest. Stop by the nearest truck stop. They all have scales. There is a small charge, but then you will absolutely know what your trailer weight is. With as much stuff as I've seen you pack into your cabinets, closets, and storage spaces, and the modifications you've made over the years, I'm just about guaranteeing that you are overweight, and not just a little. I'd love to be wrong this one time, but there is only one way to tell. Get to a set of scales. Please! 🙂 Actually, it is almost impossible to full time RV and not run overweight. They only give you 2000 to maybe 2500 lbs, depending on your exact model, and that has to include your water, and the liquids in your other tanks. With all the clothes, food, accessories, and other items you need or accumulate over the years, almost no full timers run at or below weight.

Agree with everyone above. BUT, I'll add one more thing. With the "nose high" issue that is due to your truck being lifted (primarily), I think your rear axle is carrying a higher percentage of your weight. Your abnormal tire wear on the inside of each tire is indicating this. Weigh each axle separately to prove, or disprove this. If you find the rear axle IS overloaded like I'm near certain that it is, then you've got to level the trailer----- or get rid of some serious weight. Lastly, thanks for the great videos!! ❤

Have you ever put the trailer on a CAT scale and disconnected the truck to see what the full weight of the trailer alone is

Don't disconnect on the scale. The way to do this is weight the truck first, then pull up and weight the truck and trailer. The re-weigh is cheap, and this lets you get other important information, like making sure the truck and it's axles are not overloaded. Trailer weight is the combined weight minus the weight of the truck. Hitch weight is the weight of the two truck axles with the trailer attached minus the weight of the truck.

I just had my axels replaced this summer at MorRyde with their independent suspension system with disk brakes. What a difference it made! We decided that our RV will be the last so the investment was made. Each tire can be aligned individually at any time and I had 8K suspensions installed replacing the 6k axels. I know it's not cheap but if you plan to keep the RV for any period of time it may be worth it... not to mention the increased load capability. MoreRyde also adds lifts to the suspension to get you running level not nose up.

Thanks, Hanks. I mentioned several videos ago around the time you got tires that the axel looks bent. It recieved a couple responses from people with the same issue asking me if it was normal for it to have a bend. My reply was no, it's supost to be straight. They took it in for inspection and told me thanks. That was right. They think they did it by hitting curb and we're having the same issues as you. I'm glad you got this addressed.👍

The axels will have a bow in them the top of the bow should be up. If you lose an axle it will be the spindle that will bend.

The first year we owned our 2020 Keystone Alpine, I hit a curb and learned the next year that I had bent the axle, as the tire was prematurely worn out. I found a trailer and frame shop near where I live, and they were able to straighten the axle while I waited. Took about 3 hours. Afterward, we put on Sailun 12 ply G-rated tires and they still look new after three years of traveling on them. Point is, a bent axle doesn't necessarily have to be replaced. Keep up with the great videos! Thanks.

Put your tires on the opposite side and check for wear on the inside. If they wear hard, then you know that the problem is still there w/o buying new tires and ruining them. Take it across the scale and if you are overloaded, fix that problem.

Rv tech here. You need to have your trailer weighed on a scale. Get the weights for each axle as well as each tire position while connected to the truck. Make sure you aren't overweight. Also, have your axles measured for equal distances on each side. If it isn't the same when measured in an x pattern and the distance between the tires on each side are different, it's out of alignment. You will keep getting tire wear.

Yes, you are correct, lifted truck with over-sized tires. With the nose of the trailer high, it places a lot of weight on the rear axle. Tandem wheel axles are always hard on tires, but an over-weight axle can increase tire wear. If you cannot level out your trailer, maybe better weight distribution can help? Good luck. We love your show, and we watch it every week. Maybe an "old man" truck without a lift kit and oversized tires? 😃

Hi Hanks, I feel your pain. I just spent 3 days at a repair shop waiting for a part to fix my fridge. $15. part, 30 seconds to install, 2 nights waiting for the delivery. It was a warranty fix so I'm happy about that. I have put Westlake tires on my last two tow vehicles and have been really happy with them. I'm almost ready for new steer tires on my MH and will be looking very seriously at Westlakes. I read they are manufactured at the newest and most advanced factory in China. Nice change of pace/content. I also recommend like the others to go get yourself weighed at the scale at a truckstop. Obviously make a video of it. Depending on how much other crap you have in the coach, your washer dryer set up should not be a significant amount of weight to cause the tire issues. You might do another video on doing a spring cleaning and going through and tossing out stuff, you just don’t use or need to lighten your load as much as possible. Keep up the good work love content. Take care.

Yes you can check the alignment of your back axle. Measure from the front spring bolt which is welded to the frame. To the back axle center pin in your spring bolt. If you show a difference from side to side it’s in your spring shackles and Bolts wearing. Especially check the center rocker shackles. If one side has more wear than the other it will let the back axle tack off.
@glengronewold2274
@glengronewold2274 3 сағат бұрын
Not exactly an alignment but rather simply replacing worn parts which a person should check and do anyway. The issue I believe they are experiencing is one of a combination of possibly worn parts including even spring shackles and tires that were worn incorrectly with the old axle. They aren’t going to correct themselves. Also, having a truck with a lift they can’t get the camper to ride level thus transferring more weight to that back axle and changing the camber of the axle beyond what’s deemed normal. Getting the camper to ride level is very important. I don’t believe replacing those tires are important. At most they could be dismounted and turned and remounted so they’ll burn in on the opposite edge.

I would think it is more that the nose of the trailer being higher is putting extra pressure on the on the rear axel and the is probably the reason that axel had to be replaced.

Ours is a dual axle 14ft cargo trailer -> camper. Tiny compared to your but same tire issue. On a tight switch back/forth cut it too close and passenger side trailer tires dipped off the side of the road a bit/heard a big BANG. Couldn't see any damage but inside edge of 3 of 4 tires started wearing down bald within 200miles. Measured from front center/hitch to leading edge of tire (use plumb bob to make x on ground for tape measure) and found a 1.6" difference between left side and right side. This means serious axle(s) bent/tire wear! Also, a straight edge showed tires crooked - easy to see! You too can measure from front center tow point to front of tires on each side (see youtubes). If within 1/4" the same, then you're within factory specs. You can also put a straight edge along the side of the tires to verify they're tracking straight to each other (again, see youtubes). Off more than 1/4" and/or tires not straight to each other, then you likely have a bent axle or at least mounting/spring issues causing things to be off -> tire wear. My main point - you can do something to check this yourself to see how bad (or not so bad) things are and this is a good skill to have in general as something as bad as 1.6" off appears to equate to limited travel before tire failure and it would be good to know this to plan for a destination to get help. Good luck!

On the backflow preventer valve, the plastic ones make that noice when you use them to back flush. They prevent the water from going backwards in that process. If you want an easier way to add water back into your black tank after dumping, just use your hose on the black tank flush after shutting the dump valve. Purchase an inexpensive water meter off of Temu to measure how much water your putting into the black tank, and voilà, super simple (no need for collapsible buckets and hand water transfers). Easy peasey lemon squeezy (no extra equipment or steps involved).

You should go to a truck scale. Ask the operator if you can get the overall weight and then ash if you can drop the trailer and just weight of the trailer. Then you'll know if you're trailer is over weight. I just purchased the MORryde independent suspension system with sc brakes because of all the suspension and wheel problems I was having. And it's awesome and on this system, the wheels can be aligned.

Why do you need a trailer alignment? Once your trailer is loaded and ALL of your suspension is so to say seated. You need an alignment to make sure your trailer wheels/tires are aligned with the center line of the trailer as towed and as loaded. They aligned and correct the camber and tow in/out so you’re rolling straight with the centerline of the trailer.

I would first make sure that when the axle was changed out (or new at facctory), the axles were (or leaf springers hangers) are/were welded correctly on both sides so that your so called alignment of the axle is true (same exact point on the frame on the left side and right down to the 1/4th inch). Then take hard look at your total weight. I was amazed at how easily you can overload your axles. In my case, my manufacturer (Cruiser RV Viewfinder) had the bare minimum axles installed for my size trailer that left little room for any cargo/water/waste tank weight. I have since upgraded my axles to the next size up but I think you are maxed out. Time to shed some weight by first visiting a CAT scale. And you might want to make sure your trailer is level when hooked up.

Evening. I agree with you guys that water in the black tank is very important, however it seems you are working too hard to get water in the tank. We are full-time as well. I have quick disconnects on our water hoses as well as water meters to know how much water I put into the tanks. After filling the black tank with clean water a few times I turn the water off and watch for the water flow out of the black tank is down to hardly any thing. Close the black tank, reset the water meter and use the flush hose to add 5 to 7 gallons. This will keep you from being on the bucket bridge.

The wear pattern described with the inside wearing equally on left and right sides is most consistent with tires that are out of camber. This is not adjustable and is dictated by the flex of the axle and the weight applied to the axle. Alignment of axles has more to do with spacing of the tires and their alignment with each. If this was out of alignment you would have different wear patterns and/or crabbing of the trailer going down the road. You need to determine if the trailer is over-loaded. There are many RV videos with instructions on how to determine the weight applied to trailer axles as well as calculating the weight of the trailer.

Put bigger tires on the trailer if the wheel wells can accommodate, it will raise the rear end a few inches higher and probably level out the unit with your lift kit

We had a similar situation. Our travel trailer is single axle and I noticed, after 25,000 miles (in 2 years), that the passenger side tire was wearing prematurely and the drivers side was not wearing much at all. We are nowhere near being overloaded. I contacted the axle manufacturer (Dexter) and they indicated that we could get an alignment but there is no guarantee that it would correct the problem (they could have just wanted to sell us another axle). Bottom line, I did the math and if I rotate the tires every 5,000 miles and skip the alignment (and axle replacement), I would maybe need to change tires every 50,000 miles (and the tires would probably age out before I reached that mileage limit anyway). You both probably travel MANY more miles than we do so that is a consideration.

It's called a vacuum breaker valve and they pretty much all make that noise. We've had to replace ours 4 times between 2 rigs

I believe what they were essentially saying was, you can't get trailer tires aligned in a similar fashion as you would a car/truck. It is more involved than passenger vehicles.

They can align axles, its not available everywhere, and it cant fix a bent spindle. Once the situations is verified you can seek alignment which is a specialty and bends the axle back to a proper angle camber/toe adjustment.

Kyle, I hope you get your tire problem fixed. I don't believe the lifted truck is the problem. The most likely culprit is overloading your trailer, this causes the axle to bow downwards, forcing the tires to roll with a "pigeon-toed" angle. This leads to excessive wear on the inner shoulder of the tires. Also If the load on your trailer is not evenly distributed across the axles, it can cause uneven tire wear. As some of the others below have commented I would first check the weight of your RV at a CAT scale. Good Luck and Safe Travels.

I agree with the comments about load heavy on the back axle,,whether from oversized and raised truck or trailer tipped backwards based on your setting on the fifth wheel mount.

The center pivot between the front and rear leaf springs equalizes the load between the two axles. There is equal weight on both axles unless one axle has the frame rail sitting on top of it. Nose low or nose high is the reason the center pivot is there.

Scale your trailer alone, if it's close to the max weight and the nose of the fithwheel is high, that's your problem!! .I'm a truck driver for 40 years thanks Hanks 😊

Once hit a hard chug hole hard enough to break my Hotspot! It was adhered to the wall and yet somehow it failed. Then my oil cooler on my truck cracked, took months to locate one that was not breaking the bank.

Our 31MB wears heavy on the drivers side inside and passenger side inside. Exactly like yours, we’re well within our weights.

Get your individual axle weight...if over 7k, down-size. If under 7k, get a shop that will measure camber. If negative (tires in at top) the axle CAN be more cambered, but your rear looks to be fairly cambered already. Speaking to the "nose-high", get the suspension on the trailer raised (make note of new vertical height). Ideally, your axles should have the same weight. With the nose high, the rear axle is potentially carrying more weight than the front. Ply Ratings have been misleading for awhile, best to stick with load rating. Also, as has been beaten to death...watch that speed rating! Goodyear G614 FTW!! Also, using a water meter on your black flush hose is a great idea. That way you know exactly how much water you have in the tank during your flush operation. I tended to put 36gal in a 38 gal tank (I closed the same valve as you and assumed that the pipe was about 3-5 gall itself). Extra credit, time how long it takes to go from 2 to 7 gall and calculate your timer based on that.

Thanks so much for today's show we always are looking forward to it. Carl I have to give you a lot of credit studying for the knowledge drone test. Holy cow it's a lot being 3/4 polish and 1/4 Indian is a Challege for sure. The Indian part can sneak up on anyone, but the part never really knows what to do then. We are considering trading in our chevy 1500 for 2500 and going to a 5th wheel. I really hope your tire issue is fixed. Thanks again for what you guys do. There are so many people that can't travel, you bring them something special for sure. Charlie and Darlene

Find a state police HQ, call them and ask if they have portable scales to weigh trucks 'on the fly'. Most of them do, it's not only a safety thing but also a source of revenue. If they do, ask if they would be so friendly as to weigh your rig. That way you can find out exactly how much weight is being carried by each tire. I haven't heard everything but I have yet to hear of anyone being denied help by police when trying to be safe.

If those tires were on your old axle and started to wear that wear is already set in your tires and will always wear that way and never wear evenly..

My friend sold tires. He told me to get a tire called Hercules. He used them on his trailers to haul golf carts and they were over 6yrs old and still going. We got them on our 5th wheel and have no problem. He died after I got the tires. So far they are great.

I think that it is time to find a scale at a truck stop to get your rig weighed!! Also, not seeing your truck /trailer in person from the side perspective, my guess is that you need a 3" to 4" lift on the trailer. It is pretty simple to have it done and it will 'level you out with the truck'. That type of place you stopped at early in the video could add the lift to the frame. Just my recommendation.

I had my trailer aligned as loaded for our trips. I have seen a 45% increase in tire mileage. I have also seen a honest 3/4 mpg increase in towing mileage. The alignment eliminated all tire scrubbing and that why I have seen an increase of tire mileage and increased in towing mpg.
