It is automatic in Workbench, if u use ADPL you need to apply element type. You can also change the type by using Commands in Workbench

Great video! Can you explain to me what an eigenvalue tells us about the buckling. And is a high eigenvalue good or bad?

The eigenvalue is an indicator that gives you the load multiplier. Meaning, that is the multiplier of the current load in your structure to have the load that would cause buckling to occur. For example, your column is currently being under 100 kN, and the first eigenvalue is 2.0, that would mean at load 100 x 2.0 = 200 kN, the first buckling mode would occur. Therefore, the higher the eigenvalues the better.

Do you have, or can you recommend, a program of learning that will allow you to think your own way through problems and identify the correct boundary conditions, models etc? In other words, to "teach a man to fish" rather than giving him a nice succulent trout? :) I have been trying to work through the edx course on FEM simulations and he takes you from first principles, but can you recommend a book or online course that will help people to think through and analyse ANY problem, without necessarily being given explicit step by step instructions?

go to a proper technical univeristy or look for mechanics and strength of materials/structural engineering courses online. there you should learn how to calculate forces in nodes, reactions etc and "by hand" calculations, only then you sould start thinking about using FEM/CFD programs, which are basically advanced calculators

I want to model a column with circular cross section in Ansys . the problem is that my column's modulus of elasticity and density vary linearly from bottom to the top of column. is it possible to model this column and define a function for E(elastic modulus) or density in Ansys? if so, how can I do that? Dear DrDalyO, Thank you very much for your video. I have a question on APDL commands. If I apply the boundary condition like F,node_num,FX,FORCE_VALUE how could I display it in WB? I tried use APDL commands: /PBC,ALL,,1 /PBC,NFOR,,1 but it desn't help. I know that in ANSYS MECHANICAL APDL I could choose the next option: PlotCtrls->Symbols->AllAppliedBcl's. Is it possible to make the same thing in WB?

Thanks, these videos are very helpful. When I generate the "total deformation 2" for the torsional deformation, the model changes in a way I find hard to describe - not smooth at all, it's really sharp and twisted with sudden directional changes. Could you explain this at all? Cheers

I see the same problem, in the second buckling mode beam edges seems very sharper in every mesh. But all the other results are the same.

In the project schematic window your allowed to drag from the geometry cell to another analysis cell to link the geometry file to multiple analyses.
