Dr. DalyO, I really appreciate the time that you have spent to put these ANSYS tutorials together. They are by far the most informative, concise, and interesting modeling/FEA videos that I have seen. Most videos are either technical or interesting, but not both - you have an excellent method of presenting. Thank you! I see that most of your videos are from 5 and 6 years ago. I am really looking forward to you releasing more tutorials based on ANSYS 2020. Please keep the great work coming!

Hi, in Ansys 2021, I'm not able to extract the results of Topology optimization to a new solution, if I do that, I'm not getting the "geometry" part of the static stuctural process. My requirement is to extract the topology optimized result to parametric software so I can edit it on my own. Can someone please help?

Isnt the ring around upper hole a bit too thin? If it was connected wirh bolts or something most of contact would be around the side of ring that is the thinnest?

Hi DrDalyo, thanks for the awesome tutorial. However, i did face a problem while transferring the optimized results to a new static, structural system. When i update the geometry in block 'c' it gives me this error "Update failed for Geometry component in Model,static, structural . Update of the geometry component in Model, static, structural did not mark the component as updated due to a change made to the Results component during the update". This may be a noob error on my part but I would really appreciate any comments from you on this.

Thank you for this great video. I have a problem, and I really hope you can help me: once done the topology optimization, I click on "Transfer to Design validation system" (8:41), I obtain another Structural system, I update the results of the topology optimization system, and the geometry of the new structural system, but in this moment I get the errors "(DP 0) Attach failed.", "(DP 0) Geometry Interface not found.", "(DP 0) No compatible interface found for this file type". Do you have any idea of what cause this problem?Thank you very much in advance!

I am abit confused with the boundary conditions you set at 4:24. Why is there a msg telling you that there is rigid body movement? There is something else which just looks very wrong in the model, take a look at the stresses in the area in which the bolt connections are located. You have tensile stresses there, a bolt cannot pull on the body. I am not very familiar with Ansys but with many other FEM tools so I can only guess what happens here. Ansys automatically sets an independent master node in the center of the bolt and now connects ALL nodes on the cylindrical surface to that one master node. To model this correctly, one has to only connect 180° to the master nodes according to the force direction. I am certain that this structure would completely fail since you can see that there are almost no stresses on the outer parts of the bolt connection. This model would correspond to a glued/welded connection.

Hi! Thanks for your question. Regarding the first point on BC, the message is being displayed because the geometry deforms slightly in the Y direction (out of plane) and there are no BCs to prevent this movement. If you would like the message to dissapear, you could easily insert a Frictionless Support on the large surface of the model to constrain it in the Y direction. Regarding your second question, there is nothing wrong with the model. You have to keep in mind that a bearing load is a simplification and if you want something more accurate you would need to model the bolt itself and apply contact. I think actually you dont understand the loading condition presented. Its a bit hard to explain, but have a look at the image here: apolloedgeblog.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/slide24.png In this case you would have tensile stresses on the bracket. Ansys does not set master nodes at the center of the bolt, and you do not need to connect 180deg. I suggest reading the help information regarding Bearing Loads. When selecting the full interior surface of the hole, the load will be distributed on the compressive side. The structure would not fail because the stresses remain below the yield stress of steel (80MPa < 250MPa).

Hello again, thank you for the first answer, that makes sense but I still have a problem with the second part. The picture actually shows why your boundary conditions are not correct. Take a look at this model: imgur.com/PY8ywD5 espeically the top left region. The stresses are way higher on the left side of the bolt, which is what you would expect from such a construction. In your model the stresses are 0 in that region. If you look at the picture you linked, the top bar is getting pulled to the left. Where would it fail? Ofc it would fail on the right side of the bolt while it should be able to displace freely on the left part which is not a given condition in your model due to the fixed constraint all around the bolt area.

​@@CurrencyPrime That is a really good point to mention. Stresses should be way more higher on the left side of the fixed points, since it is pulled to the right. But, in the model we do have a opposite... I think boundary conditions do not reflect the real case.

Here's my problem. I have given transfer to Design validation(geometry) after Structural optimization in ANSYS 2022R2 student version What happens is my geometry which is only 90mm in Structural optimization module is showing as 90m in Spaceclaim. What is the problem behind this? How can i get the optimized geometry with the same units?

Good afternoon, is it possible to estimate the heat flow (wm ^ -2) versus the time (s) entering the experimental temperatures in Celsis versus the time (inverse problem) using ANSYS and Direct Optimization? My 3D domain is a solid one. The following are the required information. Properties of solid (3D): Thermal conductivity k: 43.1 W/(m.K) Density rho: 14900 kg/m^3 Heat capacity at constant pressure Cp: 332.94 J/(kg.K) The files "Termocouple 1.txt" and "Termocouple 2.txt" contain the temperatures measured experimentally, in Celsius, versus the time in seconds. The "Measured Heat flux for comparison.txt" file contains the experimental measured heat flow and can be used for comparison with the numerical inverse technique that will estimate the heat flow (W m^-2) versus time (s). The files "solid_domain.igs" or "solid_domain.x_b" show the drawing made in SolidWorks for use in numerical simulation, drawn in mm. The "Results using COMSOL.bmp" file presents the comparison of the heat flows estimated by the Nelder-Mead optimization technique and the heat flow measured experimentally. Which method of topology optimisation is used here like SIMP, BESO , level set or ESO? Actually i want to know at the backend of Ansys, which algorithm is used. Basically, i want to perform topology optimisation in a coding environment especially in python, so some information is required regarding this. By comparing previous model stress value increased..then what is the purpose of topology optimization?

If i remember correctly the stress may have marginally increased. So the real savings is weight of material.

Hello there, I'm using Ansys 2020 version. When I clicked on the results to choose "Transfer to Design Validation System", in the new window I didn't get the option "Geometry", just the other ones (Model, Setup, etc.). What could be the problem? Thanks.

Respected sir i am tryin this from a week but still facing a problem while adding cylinderical and bearing support on hole sir i dont not whats the reason behind that it cannot select that cylinderical hole for both bearing laod and cylendrical support sir kinldy gauide me how i solve this problem.actullay when i slect that hole it would turn into green shaded line but when i press apply that agian it remain deselected and no conditon applied on that hole .Sir i know you are professional and you have more knowledge than me kindly help me to solve this issue

sir plz help thiz kind of error comes in ansys 14 You have a bearing load that has an axial component. This is not allowed. If an axial component is desired, create a separate force load in order to apply the axial component. One or more bodies may be underconstrained and experiencing rigid body motion. Weak springs have been added to attain a solution. Refer to Troubleshooting in the Help System for more details.

Great video man. I am however struggling on how to an optimization for the displacement and mass. The displacement response convergence graph shows that the displacement stays zero which results in a non-convergence error. The mass criterion converges fine. Any ideas?

hello doctor, i am performing topological optmization for 2d truss structure and am able to perform static structural analysis perfectly. But, for topological optimization, i am not able to use line body for optimization even though i have given a circular cross section area for the body. can you suggest any possible reason for the same?

great tutorial. I followed the procedure. but I get the following error when I add topology optimsation block. "Update failed for the Solution component in Topology Optimization. Error updating cell Solution in system Topology Optimization." the solution of optimisatino block has a red cross on it, others have a checked mark. no other error symbol anywhere. any idea what might have caused this?

going into the setup section of topology optimisation: I see this error before I do anything: "The optimization solution run was terminated. Check the Optimization Output on the Solution Information object for possible causes."

After the topology optimization part I got a error in feeding the optimised result to the geometry. It mentions update failed topology optimization has not generated a smoothed model file to consume. Any ideas of this problem., By the way the tutorial is great 🔥🔥🔥🎉❤️❤️

I am running some topology optimisation on bicycle design, and I'm wondering if there is an option to remove material from the edges of the mesh only? The optimised shape I get is consists of a truss structure with many members which makes sense, but I would like to see what sort of monocoque shape would be formed, but I am unsure if there is an option for the optimisation to remove material from the outside in. Do you know if it is possible?

+Quang Vuong Try looking into the other options when using optimization, there are features like manufacturing constraints which might be what your looking for. You can find more about it in the help menu!

i have a problem when i click on geometry i get design modeler instead of spaceclaim, what can i do to have spaceclaim directly

+El Makkaouy Mohamed In the main ANSYS Workbench menu bar, click on "Tools" then "Options", then in the tree on the left, click on the last item called "Geometry Import", then under "General Options" change the "Preferred Geometry Editor" to "SpaceClaim Direct Modeler" then click on "Ok" at the bottom. Please let me know if this works and helped answer your question!! You can also always right click on the Geometry cell and choose to open with either DesignModeler or Spaceclaim.

i've tried everything you said , but it is not working , all i get is design modeler, every time i click on geometry cell

do you have spaceclaim installed? valid license? maybe your running an older version of ansys
