Ant Plants

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park's Director of Horticulture Steve LaWarre introduces us to the weird and wonderful world of ant plants! Ant plants have a symbiotic relationship with an ant colony that lives inside the plant. Steve explains how this relationship works, and shows us a look inside the structure of these plants.

Just a correction, rubiaceous ant plants do not have extrafloral nectaries inside their caudex. Rough internal surfaces are modified root-like structures that absorb ant debris.

These ant plants are fascinating.

The species of ants are usually Philidris sp. and Technomyrmex sp.
