Excellent DIY! I'm new to the hobby and love to craft. The only tricky part looked to be the ledgevover the water tower. Is that just very careful carving? That looks like delicate work. Could you explain please how the tank water with the blue tap works ? how you make water flow from it ? drop by drop ? how you can control it to prevent a flood in the formicarium ? it is not very clear to me . thanks if you'll explain more about the water tank
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
hello again Stefano! The water in the blue tab is air tight - son water will only flow when water in the round dish underneath it falls bellow a certain threshold and not overflow when it is full. There is some water pressure physics involved in this
@stefanomaraviglia15592 жыл бұрын
@@AntsVienna Thanks for your reply i appreciate and i also appreciate that you do not let people behind with their dubts. Exactly what you mean with air tight ? where is possible buy it ? do you sell it ? and still what can you tell me about the mesh ? it must be preformed ? so you mean that the big tube must go inside the round dish and if the round dish is full it will not overflow ? but just a minimal part will flow in to the round dish when the round dish is going be empty ?? where possible buy those tubes ?
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
hey. No, it does not work like that. I think it is cold the "pascal principle" that inspired my design. It is pretty complex and needs to be done exactly right to work... I have to improve that further. For now I would suggest you stick to the principle of the normal water tower - namely a reservoir topped with an 80+ steel mesh and granting access from the side to fill up externally. You can see that at 7:58

did he expect the ant to walk casually on that smooth tube normally?
@AntsVienna3 жыл бұрын
Hello there. Yes, in fact most ants have no problem at all walking on smooth surfaces, including glass. This pvc tubing is peace of cake for them to climb. The only ants that need some support in tubing are Messor species - You can help those by letting a little rope string through the tube piece for them to grab on.
@winkerwatty1047 Жыл бұрын
Hey, Just a question, in the water tower that the ants drink from is mold a possible problem? If so how would you clean it? Thanks
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hello there. No, mold is no problem there. It consists of plastic and V4 corrosion-proof metal mesh - there is no possible way to get mold there, unless you continually overflood it
@winkerwatty1047 Жыл бұрын
@AntsVienna that's good. just a second question then. Do the ants drink through the mesh or does the water settle just over the mesh but not over the plastic container? (This may sound like a stupid question but I'm just checking as I'm assuming the ants can't drink when there's the mesh in-between them and the water). Thanks :)
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hello again. Actually the design allows for the water to get over the mesh, but not over the plastic container - like you said. BUT ants can in fact also drink the water when it condensates from beneath onto the mesh. So they have multiple ways to drink

Idk what the second water tower is in the one for
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
Hello Dorothy! Watching it from the front: The left tower (with mesh on top) is to raise the ambient humidity level of the nesting area, while the one on the right (with steel mesh deeper inside) is designed to lets the ants drink and keep them from drowning. Hope my explanation was helpful!😅

I could swear I saw plaster spill all over the counter for a second… 🤨 but yeah on another note would appreciate more explanation of function of water tower

Have you heard the explanation I gave at the end of the video 20:14 ? Feel free to ask if that does not already help you out😉

Still it is not clear enough ( to me ) how you connect the W.T at the small pipe ( tube ) and where you place it .

I just drilled a hole into the closing lid of the test tube

Will u do a give away?😁 and how many workers should there be in order to move an ant colony into one of those?
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
I generally suggest moving colonies in formicaria after they've reached 20 workers (10 if Camponotus sp.) hope this helps you!

I don’t have access to Ytong or fire brick
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Why not? They can both be found in all sorts of local stores. That being said - you can also try to make a DIY antfarm from plaster, here is a tutorial😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZyWnq2Dp72eZ5Y&ab_channel=AntsVienna

Can’t wait to receive the nest I won as I just won a myrmecia nigrocincta queen that has a bunch of larva and is in need of a founding nest

Nice! Will contact you for the shipping. I strongly suggest you leave the Queen in a test tube until she has her first workers though

@@AntsVienna i tried making a few ytong nests but they all broke sadly.
@EstheticAnts4 жыл бұрын
Maybe its the ytong quality
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
You have to be careful with Ytong, though a small part breaking usually shouldn't ruin the design
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that may also be the case

@AntsVienna2 ай бұрын

The green and yellow was not a really good colour combination but I'm not saying that its bad

It's more like sand-brown. Looks really good in person. But color combinations require some experiments for sure :)
