This is one of the best Fusion videos I've ever seen. Most tutorials are just designing parts where the dimensions are known and are a single part. This was a great "building around real parts" demonstrations. Plus, very nice to see the full workflow.

Thanks so much! I think I can answer your question: 1) I've only been on this somewhat seriously for 1.5 years. Most channels take a few years to really take off 2) Upload interval has been... inconistent at best. 3) A lot of the content is kinda niche, and something like this tutorial needs a while I think to show up in search. I've noticed several videos now only started to do well months after being uploaded. In fact my portable air conditioner window plate video is really picking up speed now. I'll probably be quite inconsistent still for another half year or so, then I'll have more time to post. I'd love to take this KZbin thing fulltime, maybe one day. Thanks again!

Incredibly helpful tutorial! I've been learning Fusion 360 as a hobbyist and have been struggling with joints and animations that are based off of joints. The other tutorials show how to marry one or two components together, but usually not more than that, or they don't talk about what needs to be considered when editing joints part way through a project. Going through a real project and having focused commentary on the topic was extremely helpful. It was beneficial to see a workflow that involved revising existing joints and keeping things organized.

This is a great tutorial, but when the program reacts differently to the result you produce, even when copying the steps precisely, it gets a little frustrating. I'm currently editing the Bottom Plate, I have successfully copied and made it a rigid group and I'm trying to redefine the sketch plane for the hole for the lead screw (see 13:20). I select the sketch and choose refine sketch plane, but when I click the top surface of the top plate, a full blue square selection is highlighted, not with cut outs for the corner details as shown in the tutorial, and when I click accept it throws up errors in the cuts and the bottom plate hasn't flipped over like yours does. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Edit: Managed to resolve the 2 issues. 1) The first was related to the direction of the cut for the lead screw (it wasn't mirrored and was cutting into empty space, removing or adding '-' to the 7.00 dimension resolved this, not sure why this was an issue on my model and not yours, but nevermind 2) The second related to the mid-plane (this wasn't the highlighted error in the model timeline at the bottom). The mid-plane seemed to align to the top edge of the bottom plate, so I went back into the mid-plane feature, and re-selected the top and bottom surfaces (from the top plane model, which it is referencing when editing), this re-centred the mid-plane and fixed the extruded cuts / feature rotation which were referenced from the mid-plane.

That was one major reason for me to make this video, a lot of tutorials seem to just focus on what the buttons do. I wanted to also include how to make something you could actually put together, and I wanted to show when you would use which button. I also wanted to cover the different ways to get new components, new component, copy, paste/paste-new, patterns, mcmaster-carr imports, components from other files. It seemed to me a lot of tutorials just made 2-3 components and a joint and called it a day. I feel like I should do a short followup on getting tolerances in Cura. I specifically want to highlight horizontal expansion and hole horizontal expansion in Cura, especially because many people have undersized holes and pockets. I sure did before hole horizontal expansion was introduced in Cura 4.6

@antalz3 жыл бұрын
@@guidowassenaar Thanks a lot! Currently the better way I know is to set the horizontal expansion such that your external dimensions are good, then set your hole horizontal expansion such that your holes are good. For me it's -0.1mm horizontal expansion to make parts a tiny bit smaller, and 0.1mm hole horizontal expansion to make the holes a big bigger. I should probably put that answer in video form, because it gets asked rather often

So I've been using 3ds max, autocad and similar software since the late 90's. My fusion transition has been so difficult not because of the design process but rather the modifications to the design. I would finish a part and realize it needs tweaks, obviously, which would not only cause issues with the part but the subsequent other parts. Then I would spend more time trying to play with constraints or delete linked dimensions etc... If that makes sense

@merrillmitchell2481 Жыл бұрын
I have restarted the video 2 times. I am pretty certain I have the steps down that would affect this.
@antalz Жыл бұрын
I think the confusion here might be that if the sketch plane is redefined, the extrude should go in the opposite direction. Fusion360 might not "understand" this. If you rightclick the extrude feature on the timeline (it should be highlighted yellow or red indicating the error) you can check what it's doing and try to adjust. I suspect it's still extruding upwards, and you should be able to adjust that extrude so that it extrudes downwards. If it's still giving you trouble please send a description of the problem, preferably with a .f3d file attached, to antal@creonova.nl

@antalz2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have the currently right? Because I couldn't see it. And yeah joint limits are a bit limited at the moment. Just like how contact sets don't work well if you move things around violently enough.
@alejandroperez53682 жыл бұрын
You could have discussed how you assembled that motor. Because even if you grounded some motor part, when you inserted it into the project, its parts will move around. Rigid joint between a motor part and the top level origin is what is desired there, as far as I know
@antalz2 жыл бұрын
Not entirely sure about this. When I open the motor file, I grounded the body component and revolute-jointed the shaft to the body. That way both subcomponents are constrained, and all that's left is jointing the motor in the overall assembly. You do sometimes run into problems if you try joint to the root component of a subassembly, maybe I could have been clearer about that.
@aditiwategave86422 жыл бұрын
I have a doubt when applying as-built joint to the middle rod and the upper plate, I'm not able to make the middle rod and shaft collar rotate togetherly....can you tell what could be the problem or how I should do it in particular?
@antalz2 жыл бұрын
For that you need to make an as-built joing between that rod and the collar, or a rigid group. I think that the as-built joint you mentioned is for allowing the middle rod to rotate. Keep in mind that some joints are rigid, and some are revolute.

Any idea how you could create a joint(s) and motion link to move a body where the lead nut is its own component. I'm trying to drive a body in a linear direction with rotation from the shaft to the lead screw ?
@antalz2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand correctly. It seems to me you can create a slider joint, which is possibly easiest to do with the as-built joint function. If you mean that your body has to move along with the trapezoidal nut, you can make a rigid joint between that body and the nut. Here to an as-built joint can work. A rigid group also works well if many components need to stay together. Note that you can't joint directly to a body, you must joint to components. If you are using subcomponents, make joints to the subcomponents, not the parent component.

The motor has a NEMA23 faceplate, you can look up technical drawings/specs for those online. With such a drawing at hand recreating the motor should be quite easy. It's not essential to get every detail right, the hole pattern is the most important, and the raised platform around the shaft is also important.

You may have joints hidden under visibility options. On the small bar on the bottom of your screen, third button from the right, under object visibility enable joints. Not sure if this answers your question, I'm not sure what exactly your problem is. Could be that you need to hold control when placing a joint.
@x87alpha13 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it's very clear! For the rods, I would have created a rectangular pattern.
@antalz3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think a circular pattern is a better choice here, for 2 reasons: 1) The distance in XY is a weird number, so I don't know if you can enter enough digits to prevent Fusion360 from detecting interference 2) Circular reacts well if you come back to change the sketch, as long as the leadscrew runs down the centre. With a rectangular pattern I think you have to come back after the fact to change the distances. You can probably sidestep both problems by using the parameters.
@x87alpha13 жыл бұрын
@@antalz I was talking about the first 4 rods, not the second time where you used the circular pattern.
@antalz3 жыл бұрын
@@x87alpha1 I think I'd still use a circular pattern for the first 4 rods. I used copy->paste there mainly to show the difference between paste and paste-new. But there are always multiple ways of achieving the same thing, so there is a lot of room for personal preference.
@x87alpha13 жыл бұрын
@@antalz ok make sense. I think the benefit from patterns is if you change the parameters of the rods you're using, let's say you find the clearances are not ok after you build the machine. But agree, the same outcome can be achieved with different ways.

Thanks for the very thorough video. I learned so much in one video. My question is probably nonsense but I will ask anyway. Consider a CNC machine. On one axis are two rigid groups of components (bearings, rods, etc.). I want to place each group at a user defined distance from the centerline. So far, I have made a mess. Is there a video that will tell me what to do? Or is this question so simple ? thanks
@antalz Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, It's hard to say without seeing the model. In theory what you should do is indeed have 1 component that's slider-jointed to the base, and then everything else that's co-moving rigid-grouped to that one component. You can then position that whole subassembly by double-clicking the joint, and entering the value where you want it to slide to. Depending on your machine configuration you may have 1 component sliderjointed to the base, with a whole bunch of extra stuff rigid-grouped to it, but another collection of components that's similarly slider-jointed to the first group. But basically my tip is you can double-click a joint to enter a value to which the joint will move. Motion-linked joints or rigid groups will move along. If that doesn't help you could send your model and question to antal@creonova.nl, please include your model as .f3d or .f3z if possible.
@paulhoshovsky877 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and see if I can make progress. If I get stuck then I will send the .f3d model. Thanks!!@@antalz

Good one! I got a lot out of watching you work. My only suggestion would be to make sure that it is clear what you are clicking on because sometimes you move the mouse too quickly and I don't know where the mouse pointer went and you click and move on to something else leaving me wondering what it was that you just clicked on. Those video tools that put a yellow marker over the mouse pointer help a lot with that. Very useful video regardless of that though.

Yeah that might be something I should watch for. I think being more explicit about what I'm opening and clicking. Then again I do pick up the pace as the video progresses so people don't get bored. Thanks for the great video, bud. Coming into Fusion from Onshape has been bewildering, but your example here really helped to straighten out a lot of the assembly concepts that make Fusion unique.

Thanks mate, and that's a good reminder, I should still check out Onshape and SolidEdge community to see how they stack up against Fusion.

After 4 years of using Fusion, creating 150+ drawings including a fully animated 3D printer that I then built, I feel I have JUST learnt to use Fusion after watching this. Thanks, loads!!!

Its a great tutorial, thank you for this. I am an engineer who is more used to software like solidworks and creo, and I'm trying to figure out of fusion 360 is something good for me to use for my own hobbies.. I like a lot about fusion, however what I saw you doing at 23:00 for assembling the shaft collars is the sort of stuff in fusion that confuses me. Having to first make a sketch to create the joint, and having to select that sketch and then seeing it rotate with the shaft ,it's just... not that intuitive. I wonder if you yourself prefer working in the other software? The only reason I think people would put up with this is because fusion is so much cheaper/free? I currently cant see myself doing anything really complex in this software, but I hope I'm wrong..
@antalz3 жыл бұрын
I think for most modelling Fusion360 is fine, but joints are a hot issue especially for those who come from other CAD software. I do like joints in most cases, because simple motions and relations can be set up very quickly and intuitively. More complex arrangements are very difficult or impossible though, for example I don't think I could set up a cam follower, so in those cases a mates/constraints system would be much better. For my own work Fusion360 is enough, I can imagine more complicated movements in my head. I would definitely consider that one of the weaker points of Fusion.

I took up a job basically. Things slowed down a bit in the meantime, so I'm hoping to get back into it. I've been saying that for a few weeks now though... Any Fusion360 topics you'd like to see covered?

What an amazing walkthrough! Even with a decent understanding of Fusion I still found your workflow amazing! Just a shame Autodesk seems to be locking down more and more features for hobby usage.

Yeah it is, I'm on a pro license but they recently removed local solving for simulations so now I can only do static stress. Not a huge disaster but I fear what else might go. If you want to be adventurous, maybe solidedge community is good for you.

hello sir, i have a question, for securing the hole is it required for the diameter of the hole and the one to be inserted the same for it to be tight?
@antalz3 жыл бұрын
That depends on what kind of fit you want, and how accurate your 3D printer/settings are. For bearing pockets you can usually tweak it to get a nice tight fit, for the rods you can come back with a drill to get a right sized hole. In Cura the hole horizontal expansion option allows you to get about +/- 0.1mm diameter holes.

This was both one of the most useful and most frustrating videos ever. I learned a great amount from it, but your screen size is such that I can't read everything, and you often get comfortable in what you are doing and say things like "let's connect this and this" and I can't see what was happening and you didn't call it out verbally. Having said this, I learned more than I set out to learn and I am very appreciative of you making this video, thank you.
@antalz3 жыл бұрын
Quite unfortunate about the resolution, I honestly hadn't considered how things would look on other screens. I also do speed up a bit, that's a tricky balance between pacing and clarity. If I go too slowly then some might find the tutorial really long-winded, but perhaps I went too far to one side in that balance. Thanks for your honest feedback, glad to know it was useful to you nonetheless
@printerstein13213 жыл бұрын
@@antalz I totally get how pacing can be hard to balance. I found I can slow down youtube videos and that helps in situations like these. Plus I can always back up and see it again. As for the unreadable details, as long as you call out all the part names and features and don't use terms like "this and that" or call things "it", then following isn't that hard. Please continue to make more videos, this was very helpful regardless of my issues.

That sounds great! It seems like a difficult switch to make, but here in Europe people do get very hung up on what degree you obtained.
