1970's Canadian scienist/technician.stationed on Antartica wrote a book 'Icequake' His premise was that an icesheet breaks away from the subcontinent and causes mayhem, a tsunami is unleashed which threatens to overhelm the coastal reaches of New Zealand, Australia and South America. Too horific for the powers that be at the time. Picked it up in the Whitcoulls annual salesbin for 50 cents. Still haunts me to this day.

Because the people living in Florida and Lousiana will have to move to somewhere that doesn't flood. They are already doing so. When this flood happens, this will also cover many cities built near oceans. This will happen all over the world. It is already happening in many areas. I guess if you don't mind any of this, no problem for you.

Missing some key science... Gravitational pull of the ice sheet weakens when it melts. When this happens in Antarctica, then the water flows to northern partsvof the oceans. This may even double average sea level rise(65cm comes to over 1 meter). Also recent study found tidal motions of the Thwaites meaning that the glacier sucks warm water under it with every tide. This accelerates melting significantly and makes whole glacier even more vulnerable than previously believed.
@DiNY-u9k3 ай бұрын
That and the fact that the poles are warming more than anywhere else on earth. And I am betting on many meters sea level rise as it was in the last "Great Flood". He was very conservative in his estimate.

A large number of our cities are at or near the current coastlines. If, as suggested, the ocean conveyer also shuts down, it could plunge Northern Europe into a colder climate, challenging existing populations. On the other hand, raising sea levels might also raise the water table in some currently sparcely populated areas, like perhaps, the Sahara desert. Which would be a nice reversal of some existing trends. I’m not sure of existing elevations and how high above sea level that land is. At one time, it had more trees and lakes. Even in historical times, Egypt was known as a “breadbasket” of that earlier age. Definitely could disrupt other weather patterns. All in all, a barely predictable set of consequences, but a change, for sure.
@DiNY-u9k3 ай бұрын
In reality, sea levels will rise by hundreds of meters as happened during the last "Great Flood" 10,000 years ago. Then, the ocean currents will stop due to the water released by the glacier. This will bring about the next ice age. We are already in the sixth mass extinction event. We are living in unprecedented times. It is just that most humans can't figure this out. You only know if you study the peer reviewed science journals.

@@michaelangelos5117Many glaciers in West Antarctica are so far anchored to the sea bed. At the contrary of an iceberg, which volume is already entirely in water, about 10% of the ice being visible above the surface, these glaciers have often far more ice above sea level than under because they don't float. Warm water infiltrates underneath and fragilise them because it melts the base attached to the bedrock. If (when) they collapse, it is therefore an additional volume of water and consequently an increase of the sea level. One can find many studies about this on the web.
@Xenomorphicism2 ай бұрын
@@DrCorvid Did someone want their homework finished for them? The Thwaites Glacier, often referred to as the "Doomsday Glacier," is one of the most significant contributors to potential sea level rise. If the entire Thwaites Glacier were to melt, it is projected to cause a global sea level rise of about 0.6 meters (2 feet). However, if the glacier's collapse triggers further ice loss in the surrounding region, the total sea level rise could exceed 3 meters (10 feet). This potential rise in sea levels would have devastating effects on coastal communities worldwide. Scientists are closely monitoring the glacier to better understand and predict its future behavior. As long as our brainless bureaucrats can plan for it in their community's future plans... the risk should not have a huge human impact.

================================= IS CLIMATE CATASTROPHE IMMINENT? ================================= Let me explain my perspective in the context of the phase transition during water boiling. A quantitative change in nature, approximately linear, comes before a catastrophic one. Take the example of water boiling. The water heats up to one hundred degrees Celsius linearly. The nonlinearity starts here. The temperature remains constant, but the input heat goes into vaporization. Small bubbles start to form locally, those spread, the size of the bubbles gets bigger, and finally the water suddenly starts to boil. The change of state happens drastically, not linearly. Crevices are forming and progressively expanding at the juncture with the bedrock as the Doomsday Glacier flexes with the tide. Nevertheless, it will fail abruptly, akin to fatigue failure, rather than progressively. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYi4ZYuNrtirkJo New climate tipping points are emerging. Category 5 Milton, the fifth-worst hurricane ever, is grazing the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, a path so far to the south that no hurricane ever took. Also, it is the second major hurricane battering the US east coast in a week. The escalation of extreme weather occurrences and their intensifying severity is equivalent to increasing bubble diameters associated with the phase transition during water boiling. They also show that we have already reached that one hundred degrees Celsius temperature for some time. Putting them together, they strongly suggest that a catastrophic collapse is on our doorstep. Not all at once, but one tipping point collapse will trigger others in a domino effect. Do weather models incorporate this crucial observation? Is the climate collapse still being predicted using a linear model?
