IIRc, that antenna is rated for something like 150w, so it can be used for transmitting too! An amazon commenter mentioned that it maintains below 2:1 SWR for 115MHz to over 1 GHz Remember, outside of power ratings, antennas are symmetric. What works well for receiving works identically for transmitting.

If that's the "standard" radio shit discone scanner antenna (or anything close) it is absolutely good for vhf and uhf and theoreticly (I wouldnt recommend it) 6 meters as well. My current vhf/uhf antenna is one of those from radio shack 25 years ago, and it's still kicking (sans one leg which seems to have walked off on its own). The down side of a discone is they are [near] zero gain.
@ddanielmiester4 жыл бұрын
@@nerdgarage compared to a dipole, absolutely. But the purpose of a discone is omnidirectional reception, and wide bandwidth.
@nerdgarage4 жыл бұрын
@@ddanielmiester very true, while both are omni, they server different purposes and along with that goes a give and take that applies to almost all RF components : you can have wide bandwidth, or high gain, not both.

Sir, while I definitely enjoyed the content for my own plans to mount an antenna similarly, I really have to applaud your 18-degree theory and its implementation in this video. Absolutely had me thinking of why I should mount my antenna off-plumb to extend range, and I'm so glad to see your assistant agreeing with your theory. You, sir, are a legend, and you're welcome to a beer at my place any time! 😂

I use the fence railing method for some antennas. You are so right. Cheaper than an antenna mast. Put two ten footer's together and you have a twenty footer and 1/4 the cost of an antenna mast at the same height.

Chain link fence top rails where I live are typically sold in 15 ft. lengths, which is even better. If you need additional length, one end is reduced so that they couple together very cleanly. If joining, drill through the coupled section to insert a bolt, lock washer and nut to secure the connection and this also maintains the electrical integrity of the pole's full length in case of a lightning strike.

I used sch 40 galvanized 2-7/8” at 24’ in length for my antenna mast. Then took a 2-3/8” thin wall galvanized piece that was 16’ long and slid 8’ of it into the lower piece. That gave me a nice sturdy mast at 32’ for about $100. Used three anchors (similar to what you were using, but three legs per anchor) into masonry. The mast is really nice, good height, and stable in storms etc

That's exactly how I mounted my verticals on my rear deck. Unfortunately, I live in a low area and have a hard time hitting any repeaters, (we only have two or three that are within 30 miles.) This summer I'm going to try a directional on top of and abandoned phone pole in my backyard, which I'll use to get a 60-70' "mast." right now the antennas are at 33 and 36' at their tips.

Put up a section of 40ga galvanized commercial grade posts that are 24’ sections. Commercial corner posts are quite a bit larger diameter, but allow for a much sturdier mast. Atop the mast we installed a gp-6, and with an offset we installed a chameleon emcomm III in an inverted L config. Really nice setup at a fraction of the cost
