Good video. Some more thoughts on doublets: About 3/8 wave of lowest frequency is fine for use so 50 feet will be great for 40-10 and 100 feet 80-10. The only issue sometimes with tuning is that a band may not present a low swr despite efforts by the atu .. adding a few feet of ladderline will assist in that situation. Linear loading: I’ve used 450 ohm for the radiating legs and shorted the far ends together. I found that you need around 70% of the usual halfwave length to get resonance .. for example 46 feet is resonant on 40m. I’ve done a lot of experimentation on my KZbin channel for both of these antennas and I’m happy to say that they work v well. Thanks for the video 73.

The best antenna for a small garden by far is a vertical Fan Dipole. DX Commander makes an all band vertical.

Hi Ben, thanks for the input. Not sure if you mean fan vertical quarter wave rather than vertical dipole? I will be covering verticals in an up-coming video. They are not always the best choice for all occasions. `But you are right; they are a serious option. 73s Peter.

Ben 2e0omr only downside to a vertical , be it a non resonant Multi-band or resonant mono or Multi-band is noise. At my typical British qth I find noise levels drop from s9 on a ground mounted vertical on 40m to around s5 on a dipole or doublet. 73

Really appreciate this series - keep 'em coming. I wonder if somebody could guide me re the 1:1 vs 1:4 balun choice on the doublet. Why wouldn't I choose to use a 1:1 balun to reject the common mode current and use the ATU for the impedance transformation? What benefit is the 1:4 if I'm using an ATU (does the doublet have 200Ohm at it's feed point?) I get so confused on this topic! Thanks Kevin M0XYM
@watersstanton
@watersstanton 5 жыл бұрын
Kevin, the doublet is a balanced antenna and needs to be terminated in a balun in order to match the unbalanced feed back to your transceiver.The only common mode currents will be on any coax feed. 4:1 baluns are best for balanced line but are not great line isolators. I would recommend a line isolator at the TX end. 73s Peter

When using ladder line from the centre of the antenna is the use of an aluminium support not possible? Assuming the ladder line is brought down the support? David G4DMG
@watersstanton
@watersstanton 5 жыл бұрын
David, Hi David. Good to hear from you. You need to avoid a metal mast in inverted V form. Either replace with a fibre glass mast or move the centre away from the mast by about a metre. In other words, the mast is no longer dead centre of the antenna. I have done this myself on occasions. 73s Peter.
@Taffy99

@@watersstanton Thank you Peter. And presumably if moving it the metre away you keep the ladder line away from the mast?

Great series, really enjoyed it. What is your opinion or thoughts on the terminated folded-dipole type antenna? Used them extensively for HF comms in the inverted V, sloping V and a standard dipole configuration when I was in the military. 73 de KI4MEW

Glad I came upon ur spot! A question... After years of towers, slopers, verticals, etc. I choose a Super antenna to pop on my deck when I feel like operating. Up in 5 min, down in less🤔. Anyhow, I sold my ft-1000d, because it was too heavy to keep pulling out of the closet and bringing it out to the porch. Which leads me to ask, which radio wld you suggest that is smaller and lighter? It does not need every bell and whistle, just a good radio with an auto tuner. Thank you soooo much. Best, William. Hi Qilliam. I think I would suggest the IC-7300. It is quite compact, uses some of the latest technology and has a superb auto ATU that can match really difficult loads. In fact I am thinking of get one myself for similar reasons! Peter.
