The Teutonic Order was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals. Its members have commonly been known as the Teutonic Knights, having a small voluntary and mercenary military membership, serving as a crusading military order for protection of Christians in the Holy Land and the Baltics during the Middle Ages.

Even the contemporary people knew that Teutonic Knights were actually opposed to the conversion and full acceptance of converted pagan peoples. Roger Bacon in his Opus Maius of 1266 wrote that quite clearly: "... the brothers of the Teutonic order much disturb the conversion of infidels because of the wars which they are always starting, and because of the fact that they wish to dominate them absolutely. ... The pagan race has many times been ready to receive the faith in peace after preaching, but those of the Teutonic order do not wish to allow this, because they wish to subjugate them and reduce them to slavery" Most bloody wars and battles the Teutonic Knights wages were against Christians: orthodox Novogrodians, catholic Poles (and later Lithuanians) and even Danes and Germans. For instance between 1297 and 1330 they waged a war against the Hanseatic city of Riga, which was under protection of Archbishop of Livonia. Funny fact is that between 1298 and 1313 Riga had an alliance with Lithuania - they accepted pagan Lithuanian troops as garrison to help them defend againt the agression of “fellow Christians” of Teutonic Order. Another funny fact is that the Teutonic Knights have themselves employed pagan warriors as support units. Those people were following their own customs and Teutonic Knight have allowed those pagan practices. This resulted in accusation of heresy against the Teutonic Knights. Those were so well founded that Teutonic Knights were actually excommunicated (for this and other offenses) in 1313. While this was reverted at a trial at Avignion in 1319, the simple fact that at a second trial only selected witnesses were heard, supporting the Teutonic side, shows that it was a political farse not an actuall trial. As per incorporation of people in to the Teutonic Order in general: the simple fact it that the main reason for Teutonic Order state failure was the lack of incorporation of non-order people into the state's power structure. The Lizard Union and later the Prussian Confederation were organizations created by German speaking nobility and merchants to oppose the abuse of power by the Teutonic Knights. The Military order just did not want to share power with majority of people in their state, so eventually those people allied with Poland and took that power from them.

It is indeed. I’ve heard the song from Medieval 2 Total War played before and it is much different. This song is obviously not 100% accurate but it is definitely more historically correct, as the tune has said to be very popular amongst the Teutonic Knights before and after mager battles.

Karl Tsang it is actually. It is still used in the Orthodox Church during Easter. This is the first time I've heard it in German, but I've heard it in church in English and Russian. Has a lot of power when chanted together in Church.
