I think I understand you? As a seventeen year old (younger even) I would turn to the world of fanfics in ao3 as a source of comfort. I learned a lot about people-their humanity and the world through it, maybe more than any regular school textbook. Strangely even as my heart would ache with yearn for the experiences and adventures told through the stories it was bc they still reflected everyday life and humanity. Whether it came through the emotions, scenarios, or maybe the authors personal experiences there’s something so distinctly pretty about people writing stories about their favorite media out of their own fruition. And hardly if ever being criticized. It’s a scream in the void. With people even coming in to praise this outwardly ‘bizarre’ practice done out of love. In summary, I guess what I want to say is that fanfiction was just really important to younger me in understanding who I am. I don’t think I would have met current me if I hadn’t ever stumbled across it. And it’s a strange praise but part of me also tells me it is necessary. I’ve felt closer to community reading Drarry for pete’s sake. The ability to express and witness creativity through ao3 is such a powerful experience when in the hands of a teen.
