It had to be right at the end of the 1970s (maybe 1979) when Anthony made his first recording for a small country label at the Acuff-Rose studio across the street from where that label was located. I was hired to work there at Commercial Records by my best friend (of 55 years) Bob, who believed that Anthony was the perfect raw material to mold into a sort of homespun teen idol (Leif Garrett in a Pendleton shirt was his image of the possibilities). So we got him to come to Nashville from Alabama and proceeded to "teach" him how to write good songs. Our best song was "I Need a Cold One Now and a Hot One to Go", which no one would even consider recording. All of this preceded his move to Music City and is not included in the Wikipedia bio. Little did we know then the extent of his talent, as he went on a just few years later to play and sing on tours with Neil Young, Steve Winwood, Vince Gill and Dwight Yoakam, write songs cut by major artists and record his own albums.

I’m now a fan! Saw him jamming with Young on Austin City Limits. He definitely compliments Neil. Great harmony. Great strings. Thank you!
