He's 7 feet tall and he's been playing a high impact sport all his life which is all you need to know. Look at Zion, Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, etc and you look at the increased pace and possessions in the game. I used to say he couldn't play back in the day when it was more physical, but he might have been better off when the game was slower and he didn't have to be a perimeter and interior defender.

I really wonder what AD's ankle training has looked like over his career. Did he do everything in his power to have as-bulletproof-as-possible ankles? Or was there lots of room for improvement left in the tank? I'm just curious to what degree a lanky guy like AD has control over his joint strength, hence ability to prevent injury.

I feel like that has to be a big part. He’s an around the rim vertical player due to his size as well so that just breeds injury. Not enough stretching and strengthening during your growth can increase those risks even if it is slightly, AD growth is hard to keep up with

Thanks for that anatomical explanation describing the mechanism of the foot articulation and the possible injury sustained by Anthony Davis that upgraded his absence from 2 week to 4. I wonder if you could speak on the following: The frequency of AD's injuries. Is the injury occurrence in AD (and in other athletes) likely related to multiple factors 1) intrinsic instability (causing frequent falls at the end of plays near the rim), 2) the strength of Davis' game being in the paint (which can often be congested) over consecutive possessions, 3) players throwing him a pass (because he is taller than others) in compromising conditions (i.e, in a crowded space), and 4) no player movement which stagnates the floor and allows defensive players to play more of a zone thereby congesting the key? An ankle sprain caused by stepping on someone's foot does not necessarily emanate from physical weakness but instead is a consequence of sterics (too many body parts occupying the same space) that could relate to the following. On at least three of the many possessions early in the game when Davis was hurt (I stopped watching afterward), the Lakers' offense lacked movement of any type -- no weave, no pick and roll, and no ball or player rotations. The Lakers do not have many outside shooting threats or proficient players who can drive (or dive) toward the basket consistently to activate the offensive motion or remove player density from the paint. As a result, the defenders can crowd the area where Davis is. Another observation is that Davis tends to fall (often not every time) at the end of plays at the rim or in the paint (to compare, Karl Malone flailed but rarely fell when finishing at the basket). Could this stem from muscle/core instability? Of Davis's injuries, a concussion, knee soreness, chest contusion, bruised lower back, a fractured hand, back spasms, hip contusion, and shoulder soreness could relate to his intrinsic instability resulting from his innate body mechanics or weak core strength, whereas a toe sprain, abductor strain, shoulder sprain, and ankle sprains may be more related to trying to operate within a confined space - I don't know. The examples I give about the Lakers offense and utility of Davis don't occur on every possession, but I think some common themes surrounding Davis' injuries can be extracted by reviewing the history of his and team's playing styles.

I might be wrong but I’ve worked in anti-doping for over 9 years and I do hold the belief that AD might have used PED’s such as growth hormones when he was younger in an attempt to bulk. Probably steroids as well…He has to many injuries that concern ligaments and we know that those are put under stress when using PED’s since they can’t usually keep up with the growth. What’s your opinion dr. Suttere r?

He is not coming back in 6 weeks. Problem:: His body, especially his foot, is atrophying as he waits for it to heal. So, in 6 weeks he might be healed -- but now he has an atrophied physiology, which, BTW, is now prone to more injuries. He will need PT and training before he can even think of coming back. I think he is likely done for the year.
