We need to start calling out this “skill”…. Traveling and carrying the ball while the defender is handicapped with no real rim protectors in the paint isn’t skill. These players are taking 3-4 steps on the perimeter and on drives. They’re palming the ball right in front of the refs. They’re shuffling their feet before even dribbling the ball. They’re constantly picking up their pivots. All of this is illegal but the worst commissioner ever “Adam silver” made it okay for the nba to get away with this. The product is the worst it’s ever been. This is not basketball, this is closer to a globe trotters game. Bring back the rules of the game please !!

How about defensive skills, Ant? Magic is constantly criticized for being a poor defender, but he was below average FOR HIS ERA and dwarfed your abilities. Ant has a career net-negative DRtg (when on the floor, he allows more points than he scores) and negative DBPM. His PER last season was 36th in the league, behind Jonas Valančiūnas and Trae Young. And don't give me "Magic was surrounded by ATG defenders, so he was bailed out" as Ant plays on the number 1 ranked defense in the NBA and still underperforms. These analytics aren't an end-all-be-all, but they're the most empirical method to judge skill and production (PER in particular). Kobe entered the league young, but he had a personality that made him an eager student, ready to learn. In college, I always tried to talk to my professors during their office hours to learn more. Kobe did that for his education on the court. There are many HOF players who would share their wisdom if young players had to humility to ask them for it. Ant, once again, revealed his intellectual and emotional immaturity with that statement.

I think the driving force of this disrespect started in the late 90s to early 2000s when the NBA started changing the rules and/or enforcing them. That led to older fans no longer enjoying and becoming critical of the new brand of basketball that resulted in the 2010s, onwards. The younger generation got tired of hearing about how the new game was watered-down and began disrespecting the past with the "no skill" and "plumbers" narrative. It's the league's actions that led to this whole mess. They should've never altered the game so much.

basketball was my first love. watched it obsessively from 97-2014ish..i can say sadly i no longer watch the NBA or care like I used to. this level of toxicity and ignorance from younger players and fans have soured the game and made it pathetic to watch (no defense, no respect). Gone are the days of Kobe, VC, Garnett etc admiring the past greats and treated with respect. shame

And he also belittled MJ by labeling him with just "skills." This is coming from a player who hasn't really accomplished anything really in the NBA. No scoring title, no assist title, no steals title, didn't started in the All Star game, hasn't been to the Finals and now he's talking like he's an all time great, please. Humble yourself young man, and learn about the history of the game and it's players, since you're representing the league.

I feel like this entire skill question is something that is underplayed on both sides. There are so many of the oldschool players, the greats among them - that enjoy talking down the newer generation also. I'm just tired of all this comparison to this magnitude. Oldschool players would struggle in todays NBA and current players would struggle in the old NBA also. The rules have changed so much over the lifespan of the game, especially in the NBA. Can't we all just appreciate greatness no matter how it's presented? It's amazing seeing Magic and Bird seeing the way they played. Just like how it's amazing seeing AI and Curry play. Even seeing such polar opposite centers such as Shaq and Jokic! We need to appreciate all these different playstyles. Everyone can't approach the game the same way and we need to appreciate greatness period.

It's not social media causing this... It's 100% the media and youtube focusing on who the GOAT is. No other sport focuses so heavily on who the top 5 of all time are and constantly ranks players instead of teams.
@icarus84714 ай бұрын
What happened in the NBA is that by the 90s teams began to play a very physical style which made the game very intense and defensive. Finals were being decided in the 70-80 point range. When Michael left for good the NBA panicked and completely gutted the rules that made defense possible. Guys now never get touched, drive to the basket unimpeded, never get knocked down. and the 3 second rule removed all the rim protectors from the game. Then add to that that now everyone hangs out at the 3 point line and threes have become overemphasized. The net effect of this is a skill deterioration and and overvaluing stats in a less challenging game.

Magic would dominate if he played in this era. His passing skills are not seen in todays game. Players today get assists for dishing out to a wide open guy standing in the corner. Its a different game, but most stars in the 80s and 90s would still be stars today, even better maybe.

In Football i never hear nonsense like Lawrence Taylor can't be better than Micah Parsons or Reggie White can't be better than Myles Garrett because they played in the 80's and 90's. If the older players had no skill Hakeem wouldn't have made so much post-NBA money teaching so many younger players hus footwork and techniques. Also extra points for the Boondocks clip.

The problem is lebron and the goat debate. Him and his fans have to tear down past eras and players to prop him up. This is why we only see this disrespect for past eras in the NBA. The reason I blame lebron is because he is disrespectful towards past eras. He could easily tell his media puppets to calm it down and show respect for past players, but he won't. He indirectly CO signed everything disresepctful JJ Reddick said by starting a podcast with him and then getting him a job as the lakers head coach. Thank you for all the hard work that you do UC

@Herosennin4 ай бұрын
Yea it also took years before MJ got a solid second option and before Pippen even became a real all star, since he was a fringe all star the first year they won the chip and not an all star the next year, MJ already had won a double. Magic had Kareem, Worthy, Scott and multiple great names like Bob McAdoo, Thompson, Green, Cooper etc from the get go. Give MJ who was scoring 37 a game and recording playoff scoring records vs dynasties that squad and he'd had won a chip a lot quicker too especially considering the West was actually the weaker conference during the 80's and 90's(and never again after lol). Not to talk down on Magic who was extraordinarily good. Just saying your take on MJ is wrong. Especially when Bird didnt need a single chip to call MJ the best player he had ever seen in MJ's second season(!) and both Magic as Isaiah called him the GOAT after 2 PEATING let alone 3 and let alone having two 3 peats. You can find the interviews of Isaiah, Magic and Bird saying this on youtube.
