Anthony Joshua dominated Otto Wallin to claim the best win and cap the best performance of his career since Andy Ruiz, so is he the best heavyweight on the planet again?
Is AJ 2.0 ready to face the winner of Fury vs Usyk in February? Or should he focus on continuing his rebirth against Filip Hrgovic or even Francis Ngannou.
Nick reflects on a rollercoaster night in Saudi Arabia.

He was never truly gone. He lost 2 times to the best fighter on the planet, and that’s okay! He always has been and still is the second best heavyweight in the world! And he’s done so much for this sport, love the bloke and was buzzing for him last night❤

Also, had he not had the post fight freakout, AJ would have got way way more credit for the second fight. He can seriously box and hurt, almost anybody. Losing 116-112, 115-113, 113-115 to Usyk could look extremely good in a couple of months time.

Spot on mate. No shame in losing to a fighter who is without a doubt in everyones top 3 p4p list. People just like to jump on the bandwagon and give AJ a load of grief ever since he lost to Ruiz - which he avenged by the way , regardless of how he won that fight.

The biggest loser of last nights card was Tyson Furys resume. He went life and death with Otto Wallin and ultimately should have been stopped. However, 47 stitches later he got the nod. AJ just destroyed him in 5 rounds. He had the trilogy with Wilder and once again went life and death with him. Parker boxed his head off for 12 rounds with a very simple game plan. I don’t think last night could have went much worse for Fury.

I'm struggling to see how Fury can beat Usyk. Fury doesn't have the capability to knock Usyk out early and Usyk is a strong finisher. Fury leans on the slower and less skilled opponents but Usyk is fast, great skill, stamina, footwork, extremely durable. I don't know what Fury has that can beat him. Fury doesn't even have a puncher's chance cos he lacks single punch knockout ability.

Sorry, It’s really not a who’s better than who competition though, but who really talks about the these contests you’re talking about ? It’s not not mentioned in general conversation, on the news and more importantly down the pub, where I’d say most of the sports fans would be and talk about it. @@nigelangel6659 because AJ vs Wallin was global stars fighting eachother right ? Only about 2 or 3 matches this year have been put on in boxing by using that logic. I’m not saying that’s the sole factor, but when they watch and enjoy organically on one side and they are paid to be there on the other, which also only happened because of the Saudi money by the way, that is very telling. Also compare ufc ppv numbers and there’s no way that a single boxing promoter compares. And compared to the sport of boxing as a whole I’d argue that makes it bigger.

He boxed Ruiz’s head off for 12 rounds under immense pressure and coming off a devastating and humiliating defeat. He threw combinations, committed to punches, he was up on his toes and didn’t gas. It was a fantastic performance and something many critics said he couldn’t do. They said he shouldn’t take the immediate rematch, that he’s a body builder and can’t box. He proved them all wrong. AJ is the best HW of this era. Always has been, but it’s finally clicked. He was patient, vicious with each shot, committed and didn’t empty the gas tank unnecessarily. Masterclass performance against a very highly rated HW who took Fury all the way. Brilliant to see.

@Midlander77. completely agree. I think Ben Davidson is great and seems to suit Aj well. He needs a game plan and multiple backup plans to feel confident, Ben and his team can provide that. I think to be fair to some people, they were concerned that multiple changes to the coaching team in a short time could be risky. Glad they were wrong about that. I'm looking forward to 2024. I would like to usyk rematch , fury and still wilder, if he can get a good win (but think he might be finished).

I think that AJ didn't have the same fear of being hit because Wallin is not known to be a heavy puncher. He knew if he got hit that he would probably be able to brush it off. I'm not knocking his achievement, its just an observation. I'm interested to see how he handles a heavy hitter (hopefully in his next fight).

It was a great performance and it was convincing. I’ve been behind AJ for a long time, but this sort of praise is almost as bad as all the negatives before. You’re not being objective about any of the fighters you’ve named in this. There were some great performances, but in terms of actual boxing analysis it seems like you’re just jumping on band wagons. Before this you had a video about how he’s gun shy, now you don’t think he is gun shy. He’s fighting to game plans. This was also the problem with everyone comparing the helenius fights. Wilder has one right hand, he’ll always look for that one right hand. Joshua has huge hands but has been working on other things because he’s seen what relying on power alone will do. Got to give him his due for last night and be happy for him, but this is just sycophantic.

for Furys best wins to be against klitchko and Wilder, just shows you how bad Furys resume is, Klitchko was a decent win, but lets be honest here, Klitchko didnt turn up at all that night, and Fury ran a mile from the rematch.... Then Wilder is absolutely p1ss poor. Always has been. No credible wins on hes record at all for a guy with 40 odd fights, Wilders 1st 32 fights he didnt even face 1 opp in the top 40, This is why he has such a good KO ratio, Because the level of opp was so p1ss poor. And hes maintained that low level of opp pretty much hes whole career. So AJ dealt with wallin with ease in 5 rounds compared to Furys 12 round slug fest where Fury got badly cut. And AJ dealt with Parker with relative ease and took hes belt but wilder dosnt even really win a round against parker. And people question AJs ability lol It just shows you AJ is the only 1 really who has continuously stepped up, fought the tougher opps consistently, not avoided anyone. And he deserves credit for doing so, whilst these other guys continue to fight nobodies their whole career and WWE stars , and then MMA stars who Fury arguably lost to in ngannou in hes 1st pro debut lol

Styles make fights, Joshua hasn’t been anywhere!! He’s still improving unlike Wilder, Fury and Miller it seems. Wilder loses to all of the following, Zhang, Dubois, Hergovic, Anderson, Fury, Usyk, Sanchez, Whyte, Franklyn, Ngannu, Parker, Ajagba, Joshua. So he’s not even top 12. The inactivity meant he couldn’t release the right hand, he’s a poor boxer always has been. Joshua is going to be three times, that’s the right route, I said it before. You talk some bollocks Ant. You said we wanted Joshua versus Wilder on 23rd, what would that have ended like? . I only cared about that fight when they had all the belts, same with Fury v AJ. Now I can’t wait for Fury Usyk. I fancy Fury, but a fit Fury, but by a whisker. So pleased for Daniel Dubois 🥊

When Hearn & others say ‘he’s back!’, they’re not referring to the AJ pre-Klitschko who would throw 5-6 punch combos. This ‘new’ AJ is not that AJ, it’s an improvement on the last 2 fights and he looked good, no doubt about it. Wallin looked awful. In fact, he looked like AJ had..tentative, no rhythm & forcing out the punches. Wallin had been calling for a big fight since losing to Fury..he didn’t do anything to warrant another big pay day.

So after 5 rounds AJ is now the best heavyweight’s in the division! Wow. Agreed AJ looked a lot better. But to then say he’s the best on that performance is laughable considering what’s been said before. And not that long ago. Usyk surely has to be top dog, he seems to be taking it more seriously than Fury. Why is there no mention of Zhilei Zhang in any of this? As he’s just comprehensively beaten Joe Joyce twice who according to these guys was right up there a year ago! Get Adam back on to bring some reality back to this.

First, the bouquet. It really is a scandal that Fight Disciples only has just under 35,000 subscribers. I've no idea how that improves, but it just seems very unfair to me. Especially when you consider the professionalism of the production. I'm genuinely sorry that the appeal isn't broader. Now, to business. Most episodes I agree with Nick and Adam. I agree with their commentaries on the politics of boxing, scoring, direction of sport etc. But this one I'm struggling with. I think there's been a complete overreaction to Joshua's win. Although I thought Wallin would cause Joshua problems, that wasn't really based on the Swede's recent record (more later) but simply becuase Joshua looks like a thoroughly troubled individual. And I'm still not convinced that Joshua has turned any corner. He still strikes me as a deeply perturbed man. I'm not criticising him for that, just an observation. Onto Wallin's record. I always think it dangerous to rate someone on a defeat. And let's face it, his reputation is based around a competitive fight with Fury - though not a close fight. However, look at the rest of his record. A good away win against Gassiev, though Wallin had at least a 20lb advantage over someone who doesn't appear to be a natural heavweight. Prior to that he beat someone on points who only has 9 wins to their name. The fight before he beat Rydell Booker who had lost 6 of his previous 7 fights before facing Wallin and before that he had a points win against someone with 24 defeats to his name. It's not great is it? Despite Walliln's claims in the build-up did he strike anyone as confident in the ring? From the first second did anyone really believe that Wallin thought he could win. I didn't see it. Joshua won well. It was a good win, but I didn't see anything which indicated to me he was different in any way. The Joshua who lost twice to Usyk would have done exactly the same to Wallin in my opinion, so I'm reluctant to get aboard the Ben-Davison-should-be-Joshua's-coach train just yet. Finally, if people do think that Joshua 'is back.' Based on last night's performances, would you be confident he beats Dubois? Parker? Hrgovic? Kabayel? He'd be a strong favourite in all those. But the difference between those fighters and Wallin is ...they'd all go forward and try to win. I still think the jury's out. And I still think the podcast is excellent 🙂
