He and Leslie Bricusse wrote this musical, The Roar of the Greasepaint..The Smell of the Crowd, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and many more songs. Other artists recorded them and made them into hits, Sammy Davis, Nina Simone, Tony Bennett. Anthony was simply beautiful here! And, his performance was flawless. But, he was a master, who hated giving anything less than a perfect performance. And, he never failed! In this particular performance, Anthony reminds me so much of Judy Garland, in his mannerisms. One thing though, if you listen real close to the lyrics, this isn’t any normal show tune. This song is actually a prayer, and is the reason he pulls the audience attention upward, above his head, and continues removing his hat in reverence when looking upward. I am moved to tears every time I watch this beautiful performance from “The Ed Sullivan Show”.

Even tough, strong Joan Collins ! Eh? - So. A lot of geniuses do wind up being rather tortured… I so adore Anthony Newley beyond words. It’s just… Part of life. He managed to take the pain and the joy… And make such magic for us all. And for that… We must respect him and Joan inordinately! I’m just very glad he managed to find Love afterwards… How couldn’t he? The man was so massively gifted…… I think even Jesus Christ - or Shakespeare - massive Giants, both… Or even Beethoven… Etc.… would’ve been grateful and lucky to have hung around with Anthony for a while ! Lol. SO.

I love this clip, it's great song from a terrific score, and Newley is very touching. The problem with the show was that the heavy handed political messages needed more show business. And there was none. So it had a short run. Anthony Newley was brilliant, and so was Cyril Richards and there are at least five great songs in it, with some serious hits, so listen to the music. Most people think this is a song about a man who's lost his love, and it's usually sung like that, but in the show he's talking to God. Newly uses every trick in the book here, but it all works.
