This happened to my dad. His father was from Scotland. He never forgive him for leaving the family. He and his siblings were so poor growing up, grandma sometimes starved to feed for the family. She never remarried. Dad grew up earned decent money and had us. I was raised Asian, he refused to acknowledged his white side. I never learned proper english until I got to college. I didn't know about my grandpa's existence until I was contacted by an old white dude from Facebook. He wanted to meet with us and my dad. Dad let us go be he said that his father died long time ago. He didn't need him then, he didn't need him now. Grandpa wasn't too pleased that we embraced our asian culture fully. When I told my dad this, he banned my grandpa from ever contacting us again. He died two years ago - all my dad ever said was "good riddance". At least that explains our light brown almost orange eye color or how I was born a redhead and get sunburn easily.

Growing up my older siblings and my parents watched many shows and movies he was in. I always wondered why he looked so “strange” because he did not have the typical Asian features. I remember there was quite a level of discrimination toward women who had relationships with “White men” and even worst if they got pregnant and the father left. Fortunately much has changed since then. I don’t know what his childhood was like but I’m sure he would have wanted his father around regardless. It’s good that he searched and his brother reached out to him. Perhaps he can now have the connection he’s longed for with his father through them. Congrats to all of you for finding one another.
