@@lindabaker4817 I may give you one small example. The show took place at an old airfield overgrown with grass. Around the time of the Panther was started, the field turned into a sea of mud. Because 1.5 million people jumped on it. I drank beer and stuck empty bottles into the ground with the neck down. When Metallica started, I was standing on a hard surface, with a girl on my shoulders, 50 meters from the stage.

I am 56, and I remember when Germany was divided east and west. When "Winds of Change" by the Scorpions came out and the Berlin wall fell, it was the same feeling. Like the world was coming together after WWII. Then Metallica went to Russia and it only escalated the feeling. I miss those days when we thought we were moving in a better direction.

I totally agree also!! Another good example is how our country including all Americans pulled together in the days that followed 9/11. You couldn't go down a residential street without seeing the American flag hanging everywhere. Unfortunately most dwell on our differences rather than all that we have in common. After 9/11 you could just feel it, the love and pride that we all felt for our country and our democracy. These days it is quite the opposite which is heartbreaking, also this makes us a weaker nation IMO. This concert was a gift to the Russian people from Gorbachev, a free all day concert that included five bands. I wonder how one would ever find their car after the show lol

I heard a formerly Soviet man say that before the Soviet Union fell that western music like this was forbidden. They very quietly listened to it via Voice of America in their teenage and similar bedrooms and made copies on old medical x-rays. If caught it would have gone very bad for them. So this pure joy in the audience was one of their first real tastes of freedom. I read that the bands did the concert for free. It was a singular amazing thing!

And thinking from the history of the biggest live crowds this event is on 5 th or 6 position, Rod Stewart concert was the biggest with 4.2 million in Brazil on first spot then electronic musician Jean Michele Jare on 2-3 spots [one in France (Paris) and the other concert elsewhere] but as heavy rock-metal live event yeah this was the biggest festival live but Metallica was not the single band (like record holder Rod Stewart) because on same event with them was also AC/DC, Pantera & Black Crows and people were not just Russians were from other countries from Europe too.. but yeah.. hell of atmosphere and just imagine if one is right in the middle and needs to use the toilet.. what it will do ?!!!

I worked as a doorman for a friend's club in 1994 to 1996. The owner grew up with one of the band. It was the surprise of my life when Metallica performed in his 250 seat night club in Fairbanks, Alaska as a birthday gift for the club owner. Over a 3 year period when I worked there we had Quiet Riot, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Motley Crew, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, and a dozen other big name bands of the era. He would sell tickets for 2 shows and the ticket prices were determined by taking the hotel, (which he owns), meals, and payment for the band and divide the cost by 250. The average ticket price was around $30 dollars. I have 2 signed guitars from shows there. One was signed by Bruce Dickinson, and the other one signed by the entire group Blue Oyster Cult.

This concert happened before the Soviet Union collapsed , President Mikhail Gorbachev had been arrested. Boris Yeltsin was President of Russia he ensured officials would make it happen. He needed as much support as he could get as he was trying to stop the old guard taking over. Metallica were called in at short notice,they were on a European tour. A few months later the Soviet Union collapsed.

The Berlin Wall came down in 1989 this concert was in September 1991 the Soviet Union could have carried on, the old guard were trying to do that and arrested Gorbachev, President Boris Yeltsin stood in front of the Russian Whitehouse and personally convinced the tanks and troops to stay with him, about twenty people were killed but the troops agreed and gave loyalty to Yeltsin. If not the Soviet Union would have carried on. I’ve been to over 14 Metallica concerts and every single one was amazing. The best was still the Damaged Justice tour in 1989, it was my second Metallica concert (First was when they opened for Ozzy in 1986, only time I saw Cliff live). The energy was just insane and the air was electric. I got to meet the band in 2009 on the Death Magnetic tour, which was a lifetime dream come true. James is the reason I learned how to play guitar as a teenager and finally, 20+ years later I got to meet him. Their music and playing guitar saved my life as a teenager. High School was a really bad time for me, as I was bullied mercilessly for being “fat” even though I really wasn’t that fat. It destroyed my self esteem and made HS a living hell for me. Being able to come home, throw on any Metallica album at the time, and play through it start to finish was my way of getting those emotions and frustrations out. Without that outlet, I doubt I make it out of my teenage years.

Funny side story, and I'm going to be paraphrasing from memory, but some interviewer was giving Angus grief about their stuff sounding the same... stating something like, you've made 11 albums that people say all sound the same. Angus replied, rubbish! we've made 12 albums that all sound the same... :)

So I never went to concerts because I’m an introvert and hate crowds. However, I attended Louder Than Life in 2022 and it changed my life! Everyone, rich, poor, black, white, etc was rocking out to NIN, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Ministry, Evanescence, RHCP. It was humanity brought together by music. Since then I’ve seen Toto, Duran Duran, Bruno Mars, Blondie, The Killers, Depeche Mode, Bastille, Journey, etc. Every time I’m humbled by the way we collectively enjoy something as simple as music. ❤

I was 16 years old in 1991. I started to listen to Metallica, Ozzy and Megadeth. I grew up with the threat of the Soviets sending nuclear misslies against my country (Denmark). When the wall fell in Berlin and the Soviets wanted to become friends, it was the best feeling ever for me. I was a young teenager. But then it just went downhill again.. God dammit :( And this was done by moneypeople of the west and the east. So sad for the ordinary people.

"Scorpions - Winds Of Change (Official Music Video)" --The Scorpions is a German hard rock band and was formed in Hanover, Germany in 1965. This song was written by lead singer Klaus Miene and produced by Keith Olsen and the band. Winds of Change is a rock ballad that celebrates the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold war. And the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The song became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification of October 3, 1990. I enjoyed rocking with you two. Thanks for sharing.

It was actually the song that propelled them to fame, they were doing so terribly before that, that they actually considered packing it all in. The Winds of Change was their swan song. Then it exploded, then their back catalogue exploded because of it.

Here's the thing no one talks about, Russian police had to deal with thousands upon thousands of reports of R. that were committed against young women by young Russian men during the show. Some absolutely brutal fights broke out as the band played. When Hatfield was asked about what went on, he responded that everyone who attended temporarily lost their minds. That they simply weren't used to THAT level of Freedom, and didn't know how to deal with it. Financially it was a huge success for the band.... In every other way, it was a disaster!

However, there were other bands at the Metallica concert. The most people I have ever played for is around 300. I would get nervous / stage fright at first but after the fist few bars of musin it vanished. I would get goosebumps from the feedback of the audiance. 300 aint a big number unless you are a Spartan warrior lol. I cannot begin to imagine the power they must feel playing for over a million. The Berlin Wall came down in 1989. We witnessed it live on television. It was an amazing thing. My Dad had been part of the Berlin Air Lift at the end of WW2. He cried as he watched the wall come down. I was 18 & it was the 1st time I ever saw him shed a tear. This was the 1st taste of freedom for these people in Moscow/the former Soviet Union. Western music was illegal before the fall of the USSR. This is an amazing performance. Your reaction is quite fitting for this historical moment.

So the Sandman is popular in many cultures around the world. He is said to sprinkle sand over the eyes of children at night to help them get to sleep and dream. Initially the song was supposed to be about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) but as it was being written they changed it. Usually the sandman helps you go to sleep and have good dreams, but in the song, as you see if you watch their video, it's about nightmares. Their video for this is a must see, in my opinion.

Metallica was the 1st concert my oldest son went to. He was only 13 or 14 and I let him go with a friend and his big brother. He had a great time and returned home safely. He'll be 40 this summer 😊

The sound of freedom! I grew up listening to The Kinks, The Beatles, etc. That was my introduction to 'bad' music. And I loved it. I'm 71 and I still listen and love this song, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana, the list goes on and so many others. You should listen to Santana's Soul Sacrifice, at Woodstock. They took a hit of acid because they weren't supposed to go on for several hours. Less than an hour later they came and told them they are up because the band that was slotted to go on was running late. Funny story but true. You should read what Carlos said about it. :)

Back in 1989 there was a history making festival that also took place in Moscow. It was The Moscow Music Peace Festival which played on Aug. 12 ans 13. It included bands like Skid Row, Cinderella, Scorpions, Ozzy Osborne Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Gorky Park. Well worth checking out.

There were actually much fewer people. But it was the biggest gig before the Soviet Union fell. People were craving to see their idols. It was their FIRST time to see them live. It was a free gig. It was quite violent, wild, but full of energy and excitement!

This a free concert called the Monsters of Rock Festival which included bands such as AC/DC, The Black Crowes, Pantera, & E.S.T. The show was on September 28, 1991 & the Soviet Union had not collapsed, per say, yet. The Soviet Union flag came down on December 25, 1991. I'd say comprehending the dynamics of the Soviet Union & Western music should also be absorbed into the context of this event. During the Soviet Union government's rule of authority, Western music was band. To get Western music, it predominantly had to be bootlegged into Russia & its republics. Western musicians were prohibited from playing in the Soviet Union. Elton John was one of the few major artists to play live in the Soviet Union in 1979. With the Perestroika reforms initiating in the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union began to open a bit towards Western musicians playing live shows. Billy Joel was the biggest artist to play in the Soviet Union in 1987 since Elton John in 1979. The following artists also played in Russia in 1987: The Doobie Brothers, Carlos Santana, James Taylor & Bonnie Raitt. The Scorpions played in the Soviet Union in 1988 & then in 1989, the Moscow Music Peace Festival had the following bands: Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Cinderella, Skid Row, Gorky Park & the Scorpions once again perform live in Russia. Pink Floyd aslo played five shows in Moscow in 1989. You didn't have a free market of Western bands touring Russia & its republics during the Soviet Union era. And despite acts such as Billy Joel starting to play live shows in 1987 until the Monsters of Rock Festival in 1991, this was a rare & limited (Western music) commodity. And when Metallica was playing live in Moscow at this show, Russia was still a communist country & controlled by the Kremlin as the Soviet Union.

There were 72,000 people in attendance to Queen's performance at Live Aid. Just to give you perspective. Also, the concert was the first free outdoor Western rock concert in Soviet history. What I have not seen in the comments yet, was that the concert was part of the "Monsters of Rock" festival, which included performances by AC/DC, The Black Crowes, Pantera, and E.S.T.

This whole Eras Tour is INCREDIBLE, and as someone who went and had the best time of my life, you can’t even BELIEVE how insane it was. She literally performed for 3 1/2 hours straight, with just a couple quick changes and she kept up *this energy* THE ENTIRE TIME!!! I was in college when this concert was broadcasted.... it was so historical that it allowed young people see the bigger picture of the dismantling of the USSR.... very different that Russia. Notice the military rocking out and that's a military helicopter. Sandman as a term after the classic old tune "Hey Mr. Sandman" that usually is used in a negative context. "Now I lay me down to sleep.... I PRAY the Lord my SOUL to keep" , the sandman will take your soul

I was there, being a partime sound-tech for Scorpions that also performed. It was a multi-day "showcase" of rock bands, mostly European and Americans, for the first time available to the Russian people. The concerts were all free. As you can see, the **army** was called in for security, but they simply gave up and rocked out themselves. I had a sergeant standing close to where we were, and I hear him give orders to relax and just enjoy. Fucking awesome, part of my late teens ;-)

1989, the wall came down. I was supposed to be in Berlin but got a bit drunk , based in Gutersloh with the British airforce. Had a plan to get out of trouble and it worked. The sheer hope and joy around at that time was amazing.
