I was there, in 1985 with seven friends. We took an early train to London from Brighton and stood in a huge queue outside Wembley Stadium. Everyone was hyped, we all knew it was going to be a big day. The atmosphere was jumped. Someone would start singing, and we all joined in. No Woman No Cry, I remember us all singing that. We got in and made a beeline for front of stage, we ended up just in front of the big camera mount you can see in all the videos. It was a good spot. There were toilets at the back. That was about 8am. We waited for hours, and we sang more songs together because we had nothing else to do. We'd drunk all our beers in expectation, and then Charles and Diana finally appeared and it all kicked off. Status Quo with Rocking All over The World, and we went all in, finally, even though we couldn't hear the vocals. It didn't matter. They were good. They did their stuff. They got us going. Then it was all sorts of stuff I don't really remember, although Spandau Ballet were great and every band got us singing, because we wanted to sing anyway. Then there was a bit of a lull. I don't remember exactly, but there were a couple bands or whatever where we just all kind of deflated a bit. Not their fault, it was just time for a rest I guess. Or something. Anyway what happened was two vaguely famous idiots came on stage dressed as policemen and we didn't really hear what they said until they introduced Queen. We all roared. And I'll tell you why. Queen hadn't done anything the past few years but we all knew their songs. They weren't on the band list either, we didn't know they were going to be there. We'd had our rest, we were ready for more. And suddenly, there was Freddie on stage. Queen arrived, and owned us all from the first piano chord. And we went absolutely bonkers, all 90,000 of us. I'm a man of words, but I cannot describe to you what happened that day. Just that what you have seen, was a _tiny_ part of what happened in that enormous stadium when Freddie owned the world for those 25 iconic minutes. I was there with seven friends, three of whom have now passed away. But that was a time and place the rest of us all still live in. Just, the day we were there. EDIT: I originally and mistakenly said 1982 and there've been a few comments since! My bad. I've corrected it - it was 40ish years ago after all :). Still one of the best days of my life x

I was working a a small local TV station in the US. A couple of us played around with our spare satellite receiver to see if we could find the feed - and we did! Funny thing, a couple of the publicly funded stations here had the US rights to "Alas, Smith & Jones", I actually knew who they were. So happy to hear from someone who was actually there! I'm also a (real) football fan, remember thinking when the venue was announced, "Wembley?!? Holy s///, 80,000 people are gonna be there." Seems I wasn't off by much. Cheers from the US, and regards to your mates gone by.

"And what instrument are you playing?" Freddie: "I'll play the audience, darling." Keep in mind, this is NOT solely a Queen concert. These people paid to see a great many bands that was the reception and reaction Queen got from the crowd. They absolutely stole the show. Freddie knew the stakes (as did the rest of the group) with literal billions of people watching onsite and remotely around the world, so they put in the rehearsal time to be perfect. They say on that day for 20 minutes, England had a different Queen.

Yes. Queen were the 16th out of 22 on the program at Wembley. Note that Freddy&Brian were back as act 20 out of 22. And then the program carried on in Philadelphia with 36 more acts. Phil Collins performed at both, 11th (with Sting) at Wembley and 27th in Philadelphia, travelling commercial on Concorde between. On another point: I'm sad that young people now probably don't have a clue who the two "policemen" are. Alas Smith (RIP), and Jones.

Gotta say, when I saw Queen in Oct it took awhile to find a good mix of taking videos and just immersing myself in the show. My fav video showing this is when I was taping the end of show God Save the Queen. I was recording, loudly cheering, but when Sir Dr Bri & Roger took their bow, I literally just threw my cell down. I was going to applaud PERIOD!!! Also refused to tape Radio Gaga...my hands were needed elsewhere. I do have a video from when the show started that showed every single person recording on their cells. Not a dim light at a single seat. I still have mixed feelings about that. Glad to have the videos, but kinda miss some shows where you simply fell into the music and left the real world for a few hours.

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 68 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: FUN FACTS FIRST: The kisses are for his Mom who was watching him on Television. MATTER OF FACTS: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THIS THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May, is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! They made out of an old cabinet his mother was going to throw awayThe included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)! I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music! LAST INTERESTING INFO: When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. When he kicks his legs backwards that is getting over all the cables, that are on the Stage. TV Cameras were not cordless back in the day!! And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. (It is really all 1 Song!) You just, truly, saw “ The Greatest Show On Earth!” Brian May said Freddy was a hard taskmaster in rehearsals. But, that he always was right about what the Audience wanted…would say that worked out pretty well..wouldn’t you agree? Freddy turned the whole Audience in to his backup singers!
@alanhalford321310 күн бұрын
Michael Jackson actually talked Queen into releasing Another One Bites The Dust, not Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
@alasdaircampbell93018 сағат бұрын
The mic stand part dates back to when he was in a band before Smile/Queen. Their equipment wasn’t the greatest and his mike stand broke, so he just continued using the half stand. It then became his trademark. Crazy Little Thing called Love was written as a dare, he didn’t really play guitar and was challenged to write a song on guitar. He chose to make it a tribute to Elvis.

It's worth remembering that Queen's popularity was on the wane and the Live Aid audience were not exclusively Queen fans. I've read that even though this was a charity gig, Queen went into a solid three weeks of rehearsals, and boy, did it show. You're right, Stacey; Queen totally stole the show even though they were not a "headline" act. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John grabbed the audience from the first bar and held their attention for the full 22-minute set. I'm an old man now, and I first saw Queen aged 16 in 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, and I have loved their music ever since. What you have just witnessed, Stacey, is the best rock and roll frontman in history. Few interesting facts about this performance: 1. Freddie performed against doctor's orders with (of all things) laryngitis 2. That kiss you saw him blow towards the camera after the first verse of Bohemian Rhapsody was for his Mother - he promised her he'd blow her a kiss from the stage while she watched from home live on TV. 3. David Bowie was up on stage after Queen, and after they left the stage Bowie approached the band and said "you bastards!! How the hell am I meant to follow that up??" 😂

Stacey, your emotions reflect how every Queen fan in the world feels when they see this. The timing of the performance that day, the occasion and it's importance, the fact that Freddie Mercury was beginning his downward spiral of health and still managed to conduct that crowd like an orchestra with an energy and charisma that hasn't been matched since. That day the music mattered more than anytime in history and Queen were at the centre of it all. Also, people like yourself are vital in carrying the torch for this wonderful performance and for Freddie himself. New generations of fans must never let this moment be forgotten.

Told you so! ^^ You crying in the first few minutes after having known Queen for such a short time says a *lot* about you. I've known Queen all my life, and I've been known to well up listening to Freddie, too. Thank you so much for this reaction! I watched most of the show on my grandma's little kitchen TV when it aired live, and while I remember quite a bit more, Queen stood head and shoulders above the rest even to a little squirt of a kid like me. That afternoon made a lifelong Queen fan out of me. Yes, this gig made headlines. People knew back then how special it was, and it revitalized not only the interest in Queen (which had been waning), but also Queen's desire to go another round (they'd been in a not so good place for a while and weren't sure how and even if they should keep working together). Thank God it did, because this heralded my favorite phase of Queen, even though it would soon turn out to be the last one. You do realize, however, that you're now obligated to react to pretty much every Queen song ever, do you? 😉

Your reaction was 100%, perfectly correct. This is why old, gray-haired guys like me feel wildly blessed to have been alive through this era of music, and to have witnessed things like this with our own eyes in real time. Simply by the nature of how media, music, and culture has changed, I'm not sure we will ever see the likes of this again. That's why it's CRITICAL that young people like yourself experience these things after the fact; it would be criminal for this to suddenly just go away. And like other people are saying in these comments, watching a young person experience this for the first time is incredibly special the "more seasoned" among us, including myself. I totally loved your reaction to this beautiful performance. I am a very emotional person myself, and I got that from my dear late dad. There will never, ever be another artist like Freddie Mercury. Not only was he an incredible singer bordering on the impossible, but he was a true showman at concerts. His mere presence was enough for the stadiums to collapse before the roar of applause and screams from the public. No one has even managed to achieve something like that in recent times, because Freddie's magic and charisma were from another universe. Even today, after so many years of this concert and many more of his death, he continues to conquer hearts, move crowds and bring tears to those people who, although they only know him through videos, see in him an artist like few others in the world. Together with Queen, I could classify them as the best of all time...unique and unrepeatable. I know, I have not forgotten Michael Jackson or other artists who have left an indelible mark on the musical history of our times...but Freddie and Queen are and will forever be on their own and only podium.

We were all cutting up , cooking burgers and hot dogs out in the yard, and generally being guys when Queen came on the TV inside the den which was just beyond the backyard through the sliding glass doors. We noticed that all of the commotion that was up till then happening inside had ceased. So we all went in when we heard Freddie's unmistakable voice , and all of sat silently , captivated for the 20 plus minutes watching what has since become the greatest live performance in history. When Queen was finished we sat stunned in silence. It was a few moments later that some one said DAMN ...FELLAS I THINK WE JUST WITNESSED HISTORY IN THE MAKING . THAT WAS STELLAR! How right that person was..we talked about it for weeks. and of course it made worldwide headlines for months. People just do not realize how influential , and truly astounding a phenomenon that Queen were. They have influenced everyone in the industry from Country singer Garth Brooks, to Kiss, to legendary rapper M C Hammer. More than a billion people watched this performance around the globe. This size of audience is never likely to be repeated since the sad and untimely death of our old friend, live TV. In the old days, entire national populations would sit in their respective living rooms, all at the same time, staring at a glass-fronted wooden box, while periodically glancing at their watches, waiting for a show, concert or some other form of entertainment to start. Now that there are thousands of sources of entertainment to choose from, that global attention is spread far too thinly for something like Live Aid to occur ever again. The band's final concert performance with Freddie in the U.S.A. was in February 1982. Due to the scandal in the U.S. over their video for "I Want To Break Free", they lost a lot of their American audience, and didn't really recover until after Freddie died, and Wayne's World reintroduced "Bohemian Rhapsody" to a whole new generation. And Freddie died 6 years after Live Aid in November 1991😢

And every time since. I didn't think watching it could get any better than it already was for me. But watching your emotional reaction to a performance that took place before you were even born added a whole new level of joy for me. To be honest, I was watching you more than Queen's performance because it reminded me of just how incredible Freddy Mercury and Queen were and how timeless their music is. To add a little additional context to this performance, there were a huge number of superstars who performed at Live Aid, including Elvis Costello, Sade, Sting, U2, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Elton John and Paul McCartney, among many others. Queen, by all accounts, was undeniably the best performance of the concert. If you haven't already seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody about Freddy and Queen, you should watch because Rami Malek's re-creation of this performance during the Live Aid concert is EXACTLY like watching this actual concert footage again. Amazing.

I have just turned 68, I am the same. Watched it all on the day and I have watched this so many times I have lost count. A shout out for Bowie and Heroes, watched that a hundred times too. All of the other stars, who were all world famous, paled into insignificance.

Stunning performance. The talking to the crowd in Freddie language and having it repeated back to him was a Queen trademark.I was lucky enough to see them twice and out of several hundred concerts I've seen, Queen ranks way up there. Great reaction Stacey. You're a total Sweetheart.

I've been a Queenie for 47 plus years and you my dear are a true Queenie now and Freddie would've definitely loved you and your passion for exceptional music! To this day I can't take my eyes off of this man! Great reaction! 👀🫶👑💙

Hello Stacey. Just found this video (and your channel). And I will be forever thankful for that. I just recently got my eyes open for Queen and Freddie. I did that watching the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Since then I´ve seen this Live Aid like a THOUSAND times. And I cry every time. But now, watching you reacting, I told my self...no crying! But as soon as I saw your first tears, I lost it. Again. Gonna subscribe. Your energy. Your good taste in music. And also, we are we not talking about you being like the MOST beautiful woman alive? Your smile, laugh, hair, eyes...Amen to you!

That’s a real rock star right there. They’ll never be anything like him ever again. I watched this live when I was 13 years old. I also saw them personally live in 1982.

I was at Wembley that day. The Radio GaGa handclaps was one of those rare moments when you know, right at the moment that something is happening, that you’re going to remember it for the rest of your life. And so it has proved.

Several amazing things about this performance...over 72 thousand in attendance at Wembley Stadium in London, Freddie had a throat infection, and was advised to cancel, and the best part was that when Queen left the stage, the following act was David Bowie who said to Freddie, "You want me to follow THAT ?"

They basically had a 20 minute sound check the day before. Queen shown the world that day, that they are sheer class. I love Freddie but without Brian, Roger and John..this wouldn't have happened ❤

They booked out the 400-seat Shaw Theatre, near King's Cross train station in London, and spent a week honing their five-song setlist, getting it ready for the 72,000 fans who would be at Wembley.

This other commenter mentions a week's rehearsal, and another one: three weeks. So which one is it ? 😉

Put it this way they put the work in and had their time allotment down to a tee. Whilst a lot of the other artists just turned up for the show and done their bit. Regardless I'm biased but Queen were always going to steal the show, all 4 members were tight and no frontman could compete with Freddie.@@daltonx6177

A great performance, especially taking in mind all the circumstances ..... but not even on the top 5 of Queen concerts. Hyde park, Rainbow, Montreal, Hammersmith, Wembley, Milton Keynes .....etc. They where THAT good.

I so love your reaction. Truly one of the best live performances of all time. I'm exactly the same when i see something that moves me, I cry like a child! You just saw a piece of history where these guys made it on account of raw talent...no gimmicks, auto tune, army of back up dancers, no pyrotechnics etc. Just 4 insanely talented musicians who knew how to engage with their audience. Also no cell phones, just 90K people living in the moment....its absolute gold ❤

As a 12 year old, I will never forget watching this live. Burned into my memory. Not a real Queen fan but I still have never witnessed a singer/band that had audience completely captivated to point of single complete synergy with them. Freddie felt it. One of best rock moments ever

1985 was a great year. My mother and I watched the Live Aid concert nearly all day. She was a heavy Queen fan and I still am a heavy David Bowie fan. What a fantastic occasion that day was. Great to see the emotion as this brought back great memories for me, I remember it like it was yesterday. You have another sub. Take care.

You know, Stacey, you are every bit a member of that audience, as well. I worked in satellite aggregation and distribution of entertainment, news and sports and was very much involved in that day from a television control room. It gives me chills thinking back on it. Working with a bunch of deep nerd engineers wearing plaid short sleeve shirts and cartoon character ties and they were all standing still, watching this on 7 inch wall mounted screens and listening over audio monitors. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Freddie was always magic. I can tell you Freddie would have loved you and welcomed you in. Here I sit, a 60 year old straight white male, and all Freddie has to do is look into the camera or open his soul to sing and I'm immediately a puddle. So, young lady, a joyous welcome to you and all of your friends to the joys of Freddie and the band.

Wow, what a claim to fame! Did you realise at the time how world breaking telecasting those two concerts were??
@ardithwagley62574 ай бұрын
I was in for one, don’t remember two, but it was obvious to me that this was an honor to work. I saw so much crazy stuff working live events and news. The fall of the Twin Towers,Tieneman square, working live wrestling, fall of the Berlin Wall. This was back before CNN changed the world chasing OJ’s white Bronco. That was a first of its kind. And we delivered all of to news and entertainment outlets around the world. This Live Aid concert was a grand touchpoint for television, charity and entertainment. But I was too young. It took many years to understand the reach and impact of these events, but watching Freddie deliver this performance is a highlight of my life and career.

I watched this live on TV when I was 14. At the time, Queen was seen to be an older, not so hip, band, but...when they came on Live Aid it was spellbinding. Absolute magic. They blew everyone away. They showed everyone (and there were many, many great bands playing) who the real masters were. Incredible! Don't feel bad about tearing up, I've watched this amazing performance hundreds of times and get emotional every time. It's because you're watching incomparable greatness. Not only from Freddie, but the whole band. It's the most amazing 23 minutes of live performance ever. All their gifts, talents, power, and majesty are on display. The most shocking thing is that Freddie was recovering from laryngitis and advised not to perform. This is Freddie at 80-90%. His skill and ability at that level is what makes him the Greatest of All Time. So glad you were moved and enjoyed it!

I was 15 when this event happened and I wasn't going to miss any of it and I didn't. Freddie had 70,000 fans and 1.6 billion people in the palm of his hand that day. He was fabulous and when he played the camera for the audience at home I was feeling it from my living room. I was already a huge Queen fan and that day I was watching with my Dad and he became a Queen fan that day too. RIP dear Freddie you are still loved and missed to this day. Great reaction as usual girl and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
