HxC, you still have a lot to learn about Dutch humor, irony, sarcasm, and fooling around. When it is combined with Dutch directness, sometimes situations occur only the Dutch can interpret correctly. Reading your face, you are on an interesting journey...

This show is called “De Hokjesman” meaning he places people into boxes, without getting the true story off it. Some people places the military in the “dumb category” box. So that is why he asked if they speak in full sentences.

I think he's more referring to the cliché of them shouting orders rather than speaking in sentences and 'with two words'. The Navy is seen as smarter than the army.

The subtitels don’t do this video justice. The video mimicks old (1930-1980) kolonial anthapological videos and the choise of Words Plays with and mocks these old video by using aged Words and idiotic sentences which are lost in translation.

The dancing musicians are no military personal! They are a civilian music band from Leiden, named Kunst & Genoegen or K&G (Art&Joy), that has a strong connection with the Marines Band; their instructors are members of the Marines Band. They were several times world champions of the World Music Concours in Kerkrade (by the way, also the town, where Emma Kok lives)

Military history is one of the most interesting things to read about. The Dutch had an important contribution to warfare in the 16th and 17th century. They pioneerd platoon fire and led the way to the big line battles we saw in the 18th century. Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus took lessons from the Dutch when he reformed his military and turn Sweden into a Great Power of Europe.

Indeed, uniformation, of clothes, commands and weapons, keeping soldiers on and paid without a fight to drill them so they could reloud while the next in line stepped forward to shoot, all introduced by Maurits as commander of the States army in the 1590's. It's called the Dutch military revolution generally.

even as a (useless) civilian I like to go to those important memorials for WW I and II, especially in Belgium and France. The most impressive I find is the last post, every night at 20:00 in Ypres (especially in the freezing cold in winter) and the Canadian memorial at the Somme. I always thank those who fought for freedom.

My brother served a soldier in the US Army in Vietnam. Server 20 years before retiring. J None. Former member of Voiceplay left them 2 years ago to serve in the US Navy Chorus. 8:51 This is very true. Nothing ever comes close. If your life depends on others being fully committed, you're gonna do the same but that's hardcore infantry. And even when I don't know you, your unit patch on your shoulder, chest patch and beret emblem shows i can trust you. It's a family. So i got through the application tests for 11th Luchtmobiele brigade. And they said hey do you want to go to the marines? Same qualifying standards. Nope 11th for me. Training was crazy. New unit so my drill instructors were marines and green berets. In infantry there's even different levels. I got into recon and a recon platoon. You have to be invited cause you're very good. The level of trust, commitment and comradery is very high. And if you haven't served you don't understand. Trust me you don't. We didn't look down on others cause we all play a part and we need each other. But recon is the highest level and everyone knows it. These army days with civilians on the base were hilarious. We were having loads of fun with them. At our demo of the recon platoon, we had a guy in ghillie observing and hid him. To the civilians, here's binoculars, can you see him? And the spotter on the radio. I see a blond woman, age 35, white shirt, jeans, brown shoes. Kid age 12, baseball cap, shorts, nike's. Older dude, grey beard, blue shirt etc, etc. So he must be close right? Where is he? They couldn't see him, passed the binoculars around. They couldn't spot him. Spotter, can you stand up please? He was 15 meters away right in front of them and looked like a tiny bump in the grass. Wtf, so yea that's what we do in recon and we enjoy it. Screw loose, bit crazy, maybe but it's a mental challenge to get to his level and you learn who you really are when your pushing to the limit and beyond. We really didn't give sh*t. Walk up to an officer and tell him he's a piece shit. Court martial me, good luck looking for someone new with my skill level. 👍👍

The event you see in the beginning is called "The Fleet Days" in Den Helder if I'm not mistaken. It used to be a yearly event where all of the Dutch army divisions did showcase events, where you could see them train in action, where you could get up close to see all the machines in use, and a lot of activities planned for kids. You could also go to a flea market and buy basically dumpstore military items, like clothing and gas masks. I went there as a kid too, and wanted to join the Marine Corps, but as I grew older I realised I could never do that because my vision is terrible without glasses or contact lenses, and I developed a severe anxiety disorder.

You must know that generally, militarism is frowned upon in the Netherlands. Servicemen are usually portraid as "legal murderers". Even when I went to work for the Ministry of Defence as a civilian and told my mum that I found a job at last, she commented "jikes, couldn't you find something else?". That is very typical in the Netherlands. It is also the country where the least percentage of the people would die for their country in the world.

Yeah, that may also be why we call our naval ships “frigates” even though they could also be classified as destroyers. But “destroyer” has a negative connotation. I do think things may be changing though. Because the truth is that freedom is not guaranteed. Everyone thought it was with soft-power, economic cooperation etc. But Putin is teaching us all a lesson. I really think this is the case. The truth is that only consequences can deter aggression. If you have a willingness to fight yourself, a bravery to do that, you can hope to maintain the peace. Balance of power is important. We are so often critical of the USA. And sometimes perhaps rightly so. But we still depend on them to keep us safe. And up until now they have been willing to do that, through NATO, for example. But we were almost panicking when Trump called NATO defunct. I think we should get to grips with militarism.
@DenUitvreter
@DenUitvreter 2 жыл бұрын
Besides a healthy dislike of war, ostentatious militarism has long been asscoiated with Nazi's and later general military aggression. Most people understand the military is necessary, but want them as much a regular individual as possible.
@starbase218
@starbase218 2 жыл бұрын
@@DenUitvreter We all dislike war. What we have to be very careful about is that that dislike does not make us unprepared to defend ourselves in case it is needed. Several years ago I read that our armed forces were no longer capable of fulfilling this constitutional obligation.

@@DenUitvreter Maybe. There’s certainly valid criticism on Iraq 2003 and perhaps Libya 2011. And in general about the naive thought that outside interference can create a democracy in a country that works very differently, and that it will be successful. At the same time it’s perhaps easy to have criticisms if you can watch things from the sidelines. But yes, I don’t envision US military spending to come down to 2% as a result of us increasing to 2%. Also because the US is not just involved with NATO, but also with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Still, I think we should take a hard look at our own attitude towards militarism. I voted Party for the Animals in the last parliamentary election, but I don’t think I can afford voting that way again.
