Dutch here , who grew up in the Netherlands, to this day i can't believe how much freedom i was allowed to explore and learn at a very young age, At the time I thought it was normal. Only now i realise it was of course exceptional, and very Dutch. Cool lecture, cheers !

I am Dutch and I walked to school from 6 years old on my own (15 minutes, two busy street crossings without lights). I narrowly escaped accidents only twice in 6 years. But those incidents were very helpful in me keeping my attention to traffic instead of daydreaming. Also from that age, I was free to roam the streets, provided I was back home for dinner on time, or when the street lights went on. From 12 y/o I got my own key for the door, and I could stay at friends as long as I wanted, provided my parents knew where I was, I stayed within the law and my school did not suffer. So, I came home sometimes in the middle of the night from a friend with equally lenient parents when I was 13. I never was in any trouble with anybody. Were my parents perfect? No. That is impossible. They were loving, good people, but very narrowminded about politics and good/bad. That bothered the hell out of me. Perfection in parenting is not possible.

As a Dutchie I was used as kid to ride my bike to school, threw rain, snow, storm and sun. My children are free to make their own choises about sports, school and profession. It's their life and they need to find their way. As parent we ofcourse will guide them or give them material to chosos from. It is so important that they choose a profession where they are contect and happy with. It's not important they go to universitym unless they want to. One of my daughters is passionate about hair and make up since little. She wants to become a hairdresser and visagist, while my other daughter is studying criminology and my youngest wants to be a writer (she was always skilled with language and words) We have agreements that they come home after school, we drink some tea and that they are home for diner. They fill in their time with play and homework and it works great. It is so important that your children are never scared to ask anything and that home is a safe enviroment. With three daughters we had our laughs and giggles about sexuality, but I found it never hard to answer their questions. It's a part of human life, so why should we make a taboo about it. And that's how Holland has the lowest amount of teen moms, I really believe that. Dare to let go, guide, assist and lt them build THEIR own life with THEIR preferences. That's what creates happy confident kids.

I don't understand how parents expect their children to be able to make the right decicions in life if you don't let them make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment as a child. Some parents apparently think that at the age of 18 you can suddenly arrange everything yourself without ever having been able to practice...

One thing to keep in mind is infrastructure !!! The freedom our kids have, is because they can participate in trafic without us being worried they'll end up in hospital. They can ride their bikes to friends, sports clubs or other things without us being worried things being too dangerous. How is trafic in the Philipines ??? Can your kid go 3 or miles away on their bike, by themselves ??? The openness about sexuality, might scare or anger loads of people. However imho it is a good thing, as it helps children in preventing abuse, and that is nowadays (if what the news is reporting is correct) often online. By being open with your children, they in turn will be more open to you, which helps against this type of abuse. Your excuse is wrong. One person needs to start, than others will follow. You want something to change ?? Don't talk about but be the change.

Only cycle alone to school at 9 years old? I used to do this at 6 years old, and I still see a lot of kids doing this nowadays as well. Maybe it's different in the big cities, but if the neighborhood is designed properly, I don't see why.
@lolololol7573

It's an average based on when kids go to school now. I also cycled at 6 alone but the current average in the country is around age 9, based on what parents choose. I understand this in more traffic dense areas. The average age that is possible for a child in terms of development, it's safe to do so as early as age 5. But the parents decide if it's safe or not to ride the route alone, so that's probably why the average age is 9.

@@lolololol7573 You're probably right. I feel like we take less and less risks. If I look at the infrastructure as it is today, It's way safer than it was in the late 70s. Back then all children in my class would come to school either on foot, or by bicycle. Now I see a lot if children being dropped of every morning. I'm happy our parents didn't do that in my school days.

@@user-xi6nk4xs4s I would have wanted my son to cycle to school on his own, but since he had to cycle through an industrialized area with heavy truck traffic I was kind of hesitant. So I'd always cycle along with him. But ever since he goes to high school he cycles on his own from the northern part of Amsterdam straight through the city center to the southern part on his own.

@@claudiavalentijn1457 I can imagine that to be the case in specific situations. Especially industrial areas are often less then perfect. I'm happy to hear you were able to go along as long as needed.

Heard it was so the parents could be taken care of when they become older, and if you are a nurse, as you mentioned, the salary (normally) will be good, and over time money is made, things are purchased, and well...

I been twice to the Filipines,great people and I liked the way their family lives but it is also their bottleneck. When they work hard for their parents and family they don't save money for the future and don't have money when they are old and than need the money of their children. They also worked for some lazy family members too. It's not fair. I hope that they can find the balance in it. Hope you have a great live. Gr Paul

Everything has to start somewhere or with someone. You took the initiative and responsibility to educate yourself, now just spread the awareness. If you can change 1 family you made a diiference that could spread. This will not change the world tomorrow, but, given time, it could work wonders...

Of course she is, it's a 15 minute talk or so. But overall I think she's not far off. Plus I see a gradual change, kids play less outside, parents bringing their kids to school by car etc.

It's all in the eye of the beholder some assets of Dutch society would be concidered not free in my country the Netherlands viewing from the culture in the USA. It's redicilous why you can't buy a gun? And if you want one for sport you need to undergo psychic valuation store ammo away from guns till on the shooting range and other rules? Yes you can't have a conviction in court leading to jailtime if you ever want to legally own a gun here. Same valuations if you need one for your work including cops. That's not free for sure! Well looking at it from some parts of american culture. Dutch people wonder on their side then. How is it possible that you can go bankrupt on medical costs? Why is the burden not shared? So that all people can be insured, if needed with grants so the poor pay less? Then no one has to become afraid of falling ill and becoming a debtslave or worse forced upon the streets. Whaat? for just medical bad luck? There is no real freedom if you have to worry about your health and costs involved! I can assure you most Dutch look at it like that. So you see each side has their laws and culture and ways to look at things that are just different. It's not about which side is right or not.

"It rains a lot in the Netherlands": Yes... and no. Statistically it rains somewhere in the Netherlands 192 days a year. However, it is considered a day with rain if at at least one (of thirteen) of the measuring stations there has been more than 0.3mm of rain. This statistic has been holding for 60 years now. And although the number of days has remained the same, the days with heavy rain do have increased over those years. (Source: KNMI/ Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute) 11:55 If "you" (not you Ruky) live here long enough, you should know by now not to say "Holland", that is fine for tourists and people IN other countries that don't know better. Educate... we are the Netherlands. use it when representing abroad. 12:19 not entirely correct, she invented the mudguard (called Spatborden in Dutch) she invented the plastic coat protector (called jasbeschermers in Dutch), she invented the chainguard (called Kettingkast in Dutch) and the winshield for the front childrens seat (a sitting device that is hooked onto the handlebars, yes... the thing you steer with). With the mud and chain guards and the coat protector, she invented 3 essential parts of the Dutch bycicle. 19:47 great metaphore :) Found your videos I think yesterday or the day before. I like your way of responding :) Subbed, greetings from Holland.

Rest of the world does.... There are plenty things we get "wrong" as well. Kinda funny how you say the lady shouldn't say Holland and then you close with "Greetings from Holland"
