In this presentation, I drew on Geertz's approach to understanding religion. The premise is that the world appears meaningless when we are born. Through culture, the world is made meaningful. Religion underpins our culture and vice versa. Religion constitutes the deepest, most meaningful aspects of experience. This may take the form of a belief in God, spirits, souls, etc. or it might not.

Sorry, I dissagree. Religion is a practical survival skill. You might be discussing ancient Hunter Gatherer religions. These are not interesting. These are just primitive yet honest attempts to actually explain the world. This is unlike more 'civilized' religions that are more popular in civilized world.
