This short video explains the unique rear sight of the early Japanese Type 99 rifle. These were setup so that troops could fire at passing planes.

The Arisaka 99 gets a bad rap but it was the strongest action of the war. It also had a chromed lined bore (early M-16’s take note) and Medford (polygonal) rifling. Late war models were pot metal but early war rifles were built well. If the US was losing the war, our Garands and 1093’s would have been cheaply made, not a fault of the design but production methods/quality control.

I've always wondered how the AA sights were supposed to work, thanks. FWIW:Robert Scott, in his famous "God is My CoPilot," describes strafing a company of Japanese infantry marching along a road in China. Instead of scattering for cover, they maintained formation and fired their rifles at his P40. They were slaughtered, of course, when he turned his .50 cal Brownings on them. But high marks for discipline, right?

@jonashunt2307
@jonashunt2307 7 жыл бұрын
It is quite possible for small arms to harm helicopters. Granted, US troops with 5.56mm vermin guns probably have less of a chance of harming them than if you had, say, an L1A1, but massed fire from a platoon of men could definitely damage/destroy a helicopter, especially a transport. I've got an article on hand in a British military training magazine from the '80s that specifically mentions massing small arms fire against helicopters - though it did not that since friendly helicopters can appear without warning you shouldn't shoot them unless you have positive confirmation they are hostile. Perhaps that is why you were never told to shoot at a helicopter?

Hehe. Good workup and lesson on what and why. Thanks for posting. Arisaka wasn't the only rifle with AA sights standard, but I commend the accuracy of your 1st demonstration shootist. One shot; one kill. Ahhhh . . . shooting bliss. No wonder Yamato Damashii was so formidable. The fact that France and Japan, both--not to mention Italy, were burdened by major ammunition changes in the thirties and the war period cannot have helped matters any for their respective armies. Germany was no wiser, spending a great deal of effort to field the new "Kurz' cartridge for the revolutionary "MaschinenPistole" 43 and "Sturmgewehr" 44. That so many nations--and especially Germany--were changing cartridges at such an awkward passage seems incredible, considering international tensions of the times. Changing cartridges means making nugatory years of industrial effort (another term for it might be "strategic materiel reserves") by letting the old caliber or size rotting away in armories, while troops at the front are starved by insufficient supply of the new rounds. One is left with the notion that the only person who knew Germany was soon going to war was Hitler, himself. The same applies to Japan and its august emperor in my view. Sure, it was one thing to introduce weapons, calibers, and standards of issue, while engaged in low intensity warfare in China and Mongolia, but an entirely different kettle of ammo starved fish to do so when your planners know you'll be going into Total War against the USA and Australia/UK soon. A bon mot is called for here . . . how about: "Life is what happens while you're busy making plans"?

A non zero amount of fighter pilots have been owned with .30cal rifle bullets from the ground. Granted these are usually machine guns but its kind of a "Why not" feature. Especially in the era of biplanes. My bolt action rifle has a very similar feature in its ACSS sight, where the normal range ladder also has a sideways portion, for "normal speed of a person running sideways with a rifle". Again, a "why not?" feature.

Well done and easy to understand. There is a little historical mistake, the Arisaka Type 99 was mainly designed for the battle with US and UK, not for the Chinese army. Also, I saw the bullet head of Hanyang Type88 rifle is point not round in your webpage's animation. Anyway, your video is quite well and vivid. I hope to see more rifles, pistols, such as, Arisaka 38, Mosin Nagant ...
@Candrsenal
@Candrsenal 8 жыл бұрын
+Green tangle Thanks for the compliments! The old HY88 animation was actually the first test piece so less effort was put into detail. From Banzai's Type 99 research the cartridge and there updated 38 actually dates back to studies from the Russo Japanese war that the 6.5 wasnt wounding enough to take opponents off the battlefield for more than a short while, unless it was a fatal hit. The final catalyst doesn't appear to be recorded but I think it most likely in response to combat experience on dense wood and jungle.

+diasirea The gun is sighted to 300 meters but I'm not sure if that means it is absolutely the top of point blank. I'd imagine it's actually somewhere in the middle of the rise. Logically that would give the longest "on target" range.

Some military bolt action rifles had battle sights set to 300m with idea that solder could do a torso shot, so likely being in middle of rise would be the desirable point.
