The 44 carbine was my first deer rifle. My dad used his .270. Us kids got what he brought back from Japan, the 44 and a couple 99s. They were pretty heavy to us skinny kids hiking through the drizzly snowy hills of Pennsylvania.
@jayflagg99147 жыл бұрын
My father brought one of these carbines back from the Phillipines and used it for many years as a deer rifle in NW Pennsylvania. I used it to take several whitetail deer, and found that it was very effective. I also appreciated that it was wonderfully short and easy to get through heavy brush with. My only complaint ever was with the Norma ammo then available. Their cartridge was obviously loaded for the longer rifle version and used a fairly slow-burning powder. In the carbine this produced excessive muzzle flash and loud report. Also, as I note in a reply to a comment below, Norma tended to undersize the cases which could lead to case-failure in models produced late in the war. I hope Privi has deviated from that.

I have to say, the 44's bayonet mount screams one word - beefy. And since I am not a big an of built-in bayonets, she's not my cup of tea to be honest. I bet if - and this comes from historical facts - the Korean freedom fighters got their hands on both the 38 and 44 carbine, I'd say they'd prefer the 38. Shorter and lighter than what they usually pick up - the normal 38's - who would hate that honestly? Thank you again for an amazing episode!Jack from South Korea.P.S.) Since this is a Nambu designed Arisaka, why don't we call it like the Mosin-Nagant and call it the Arisaka-Nambu?
@MrLolx2u8 жыл бұрын
The reason why the Japanese prides themselves in their bayonets is due to the Meiji era's reformation. The Samurai class was totally wiped out and all transformed into modern day, smokeless powder era generals and with this change, so long was the days of bow slinging and swords clashing. So for the IJA to revitalize the Bushido code, the bayonet was brought back and honored to be the pikes for normal infantry where officers gets Katanas. That's why till the end of WWII, IJA and IJN troops are more trained in Banzai Charges, bayonet attacks and even swordsplay more than their tactical charges the other nations make.

The old early-Meiji officer swords were styled after Western sabers. It wasn't until around after WWI that they changed it to the Japanese style sword.
@planescaped6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Japan kind of went nuts after the Meiji Restoration. They were made so impotent during the foreign interference of the Edo period that they wayyyyy over-compensated come the Meiji period. There was a lot of internal, anti-foreigner sentiment and jealousy bred over those centuries that they really cut loose when they found themselves on the other side. They wanted to be the imperial power shoving others around because they thought that is what a strong country was, because that was what happened to them.
@Helltanz983 жыл бұрын
No, this is wrong. Firstly the meiji era army started with black powder rifles, and they didn't go to smokeless rifles until the late 1880s. The Type 13 was still black powder and it was from 1880, and the bayonet obsession already existed by then. The Japanese doctrinal obsession with the bayonet came from the French Infantry doctrine they originally brought over. It had absolutely nothing to do with the samurai cliques in the army, and certainly wasn't 'brought back' it was a feature from jump street because the French instructors insisted that Bayonets and 'Elan' were the decisive instrument of battle... something (the French) to continued to believe into world war 1 (The Soviet Union actually continued this doctrinal holdover until the late thirties as part of the dominance of infantry so its not like Japan was super terribly behind in terms of great powers and institutional inertia in doctrine). The US had actually been trying to insist the bayonet was obsolete as early as the 1870s.
@MrLolx2u3 жыл бұрын
@@Helltanz98 Not entirely wrong but also, not entirely true. Yes Japan started with blackpower weapons but in Asia wise, they were pretty quick in adapting smokeless power and when the Type 30 Arisaka rolled out, they became the only Asian country at that time to be fully equipped with smokeless powder rifles while the Koreans are fumbling all over the place and China is just.. Well, China. The bayonet doctrine might be instilled into the them by the French but in retrospect, the French themselves had already abandoned that idea before WWI (I don't know where you got that notion that they carried it into WWI cuz they already realized it's obsolescence by the Franco-Prussian War but still need a bayonet) but when they were training the Meiji army, not yet. However, if you read into the Japanese side of view, they said that foot soldiers at that point wern't supposed to have bayonets when they were trained by the French but because after the Boshin War and the Satsuma Rebellion, they realized how vulnerable these conscripts can be if their rifles jammed on them or worse still, misused which led to failure and then they'll just be overran by cavalry and guns. Thus, someone in the military or Meiji himself gave out an directive that all foot soldiers would be given bayonets as standard kit and that would be their secondary arms if all else fails and their spirit in the fight would "carry them to countless victories" which also instills in them the Bushido code that the Japanese warriors enshrine on themselves. That definitely has nothing to do with the French on how the Japanese interpreted it.
@lstevens28348 жыл бұрын
Another great video! The 6.5x50 cartridge is somewhat light anyway so it should do well in a carbine. I read that the japanese soldiers liked the 38 for its mild recoil. I admit I like it for the same reason. Getting a little old and recoil is starting to hurt. :)

I have a Type 38 carbine and a nice Shin Gunto my dad brought back from WWII in the Pacific. The type 38 has an unmolested "mum", the original sling, but no dust cover. I have been shooting Norma bottle nose and more recently, Steinal spitzer soft tip ammo. It is a joy to shoot and, at least at any range I can see with my 77 year old eyes, it is as accurate as a friend's .222 modern rifle. My questions are about fired brass. It is all slightly bulged and I know this is common with all type 38's. Why did the Japanese machine the chambers larger than necessary? The rest of the gun is very very well made, so I assume they had their reasons. Question #2, Is the bulged brass safe to reload?

A big reason the IJA liked bayonets was their use of night fighting. Firing a rifle of that era which did not have flashhiders not only temporarily blinded the shooter, but also gives away your position. The Japanese (whether it was propaganda or actual research) believed that their dark eyes were better suited to seeing in the dark as oppose to western blue-eyes and night attacks were commonly used in WW2. The tactic called for sneaking up as close to the enemy line and rush the position using bayonets to prolong the element of surprise.
