[S2 E09] Revolutionary Transformation Requires a Collective Response

In this episode, Prof. Harvey argues that we cannot survive this viral crisis without a radical reconfiguration of the social and institutional arrangements. Any revolutionary transformation of society has to operate across all dimensions: technology, relation to nature, social relations, production apparatuses, social reproduction, institutional arrangements, State apparatuses and mental conceptions.

All of this is great...but I love this: "Individualism is the result of collective action." This is so difficult to communicate through the fog of the falsely dichotomous 'individual vs. collective' narrative. Thank you!

Support the #MayDay strikes tomorrow. Employees from Amazon, Whole Foods, Walmart, FedEx, Target and Instacart will be walking off the job demanding compensation for hazard pay, sick leave, personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, etc. Please stand with these essential workers. Do not shop at these businesses tomorrow and do not cross picket lines! #UnitedWeBargain #DividedWeBeg #generalstrike2020 #essentialworkersday #organizedlabor #labormovement

One of the biggest problems is the so called "Defence Industries." Even in this crisis we are still wasting billions on armaments , weapons and an industrial military structure that does not work for most people. These are on the whole "Multinational" and would be more truthfully called the "Destructive industries." Even if some of this money had been diverted into proactive health services and planned parenthood etc., we might have taken a step in the right direction. Modern Capitalism is still not working in favour of the masses. Remember, Marx was living in a world with only one seventh of the population that we now have, the problem is now proportionally bigger, but the resources remain the same. We just use the resources faster and have so much more wastage. Obviously this can't continue? We need to have new theories and another mindset on what is valuable, not just repeat the same old stuff, there has just been a stumbling forward and reaction to the present situation from one crisis to the next, without any plan or proper political structure to make adequate responses.

It takes time and effort to teach people how to think clearly and for that in turn become a new kind of philosophy and way of looking at the world, the crucial problem here in this equation is time, we don't have much time at all before is too late. I hope there's some silent collective consciousness that's developed and will surprise us, starting with this years presidential election, as terrible as Biden is, Trump can't be reelected if we want to have any hope for popular movements to pressure and reshape the current institutional structures.

Personally, I found this the most engaging of Prof. Harvey's videos. He has a tendency to be a it stodgy in front of the camera. Perhaps doing it from home is the best place in this case.

A factor Marx did not contemplate (at least I have found nothing in his writing to suggest otherwise) is the possibility that human activity would reach a stage when change in behaviors and changes in technologies could not prevent the destruction of the planet's life-supporting capability. We need to remember that the earth required billions of years before its atmosphere stabilized so that plant life arose. Billions more years passed before the first animal life appeared. The conditions required for the evolution and survival of most animals and certainly of our species is quite narrow. On a daily basis we are experiencing changes in conditions that make human habitats in an increasing portion of the planet tenuous and life-threatening. Even if there occurred the sort of social transformation that addresses the destructive behaviors exhibited under "capitalism," the human footprint on the planet will remain heavy just because of our numbers. Is it not fair to observe that the life-supporting capabilities of the planet was far more regenerating when there were, say, just one billion of us?

Seem Malthusian. There is enough food, there is enough space. We just need to deal with the rich who take more than their fair share. And it is capitalism that promotes the destruction of the environment.
@nthperson
@nthperson 4 жыл бұрын
@@antediluvianatheist5262 There is nowhere a truly just distribution of wealth. Thus, poverty for some in every society is inevitable. Monopoly of land, of natural resources and other assets provided by nature (e.g., frequencies on the broadcast spectrum) is widespread. Monopoly by some denies the opportunity for a decent human existence to others. Our ecosystems are victims as well of the resulting "throw away" mentality that is nurtured. There was a point in human civilization when having a large family provided security in one's old age. Today, having a large family is almost a guarantee that you are among the poor and struggling. For reasons quite different from those argued by Malthus, the intelligent decision is to reduce family size and gradually reduce the human population. If we ever get real justice in the world, then our population size may no longer be something to worry about.

America should never return to a complete free market system,if we learn anything from this current pandemic. every one is presently looking for the government for help,the present system just keep sending the cost higher."free market"no consideration for flat wages.since government is at the forefront at present why should government not be able to have some say in terms of regulation?

David Harvey is one of the very few people who truly understands the holistic-dialectical nature of Marx's thinking. Simply bc holism is very difficult to grasp. Now a question: is patriarchy one of those moments, is it included/embedded into power relations, or modes of reproduction? Or is the entire structure, the whole Dimension of the complex dynamic system called society? Why is it so difficult for men-even the most brilliant of them-to conceive of Patriarchy as being the all encompassing *structural essence*, not broken into any momentums, rather the Mother of those momentums. Or, perhaps, the underlying substratum of all the momentums. As when a molten material cools and crystallizes into its solid structure, it lattice lines itself up over a certain pattern that forms its substratum, its structural essence. Like Patriarchy.

Sounds like we are already living in that world. The movement restrictions are more subtle. First you have to suffer through the state bureaucracy with all their necessary paper work. Then there are the hidden layers of race and class

I have a bad news to Nobel prices winners as Paul Krugman,Joseph Stiglitz, and University professor, Richard Wolff. The fast and correct solution to creat jobs, in such a crisis period, is to implement specific projects aimed to valorise the USA 5 magic Ts, (Talent, Tradition, Tourism , Tech, Transfer of know how, and attract billions from Mexico, Canada, China, the European Union, etc In this context, teachers and University professors from all over the USA, must be obliged to work online with pupils, over 14 years and students and implement specific projects that can permit them to attract billions from China, Mexico, Canada etc and create millions jobs Admiting that a student will win $ 2700 per month, academic products, he will create shall be monetized, his parents, grand parents, will partecipate in the process and win extra income This mean to create jobs immediately and generate extra income for all family members.

You want - no capitalist mode of production - a new society Tell me will we be able/willing to reduce - from 7 Billion to 700 Million - the size of the cities by 1/10 - the traffic by 1/10 And increase the size of the natural forests by >100x .. otherwise I’m not keen/happy not to live in the world of tomorrow
