For those saying antidepressents can have negative effects and can be a big deal, have you seen the full show this number is from? It's a really incredible TV series. And they actually address this a ton. It's why the main character (in the red dress) is so resistant to meds because of how poorly prescribed the other ones were for her.

That the the "zombie" affect they tend to have. The feeling of neither negative nor positive emotions being that strong. I do wish at some point they had addressed in song that sometimes the depression can get worse or be unaffected and that medications is about finding the right cocktail with side-effects that you can handle, BUT in the point of the show, she's scared to take them at all because of the zombie affect and also trying to commit suicide through medication, so it's understandable that it's a hell of a lot more upbeat that what can be the reality for some people.

I loved the show but they never actually addressed which meds caused negative effects. She felt like a zombie in NY but her new psychiatrist immediately says that her old doctor was a quack, and that she wouldn't prescribe his cocktail of medications. Then the pills that her mom gave her at home that made her ears ring (which we know she had taken before because she wonders how she didn't recognize the ringing in her ears) were anti-anxiety meds. The show never addresses specifically how antidepressants made her feel in the past, only that she felt ashamed to take them. This could even mean she never took them before. But what's funny is that the series also doesn't show antidepressants helping her... She only finds happiness and is at peace with herself once her friend helps her realize what her dream is and she pursues it.

People are really acting like this show forced you to take antidepressants. If this song doesn’t rub you the right way, then it’s not directed to you. You know who it is for ? People who don’t want to take them because of the stigma. Normalizing medical advancements/ options is the point of the song.

I hate it when people tell others with mental issues that they should be able to fight it on your own. Do they also expect people with high blood pressure or cardiac diseases to fight it on their own? People with thyroid diseases to manage without supplementing hormons? Asthma patients to just breath deeper and skip the inhaler? What a stupid argument is that! Just because your illness/disfuntion is in the brain and not any other organ it doesn't make it any less real or any less treateable with meds.
@kittyquiqui

berlineczka I agree. Where I come from, people don't even think mental issues are an illness. I have clinical depression and they say "You're just sad" or "It's all in your head, get over it". I believe this stems from the lack of education in our country and complete ignorance.

Why are people unable to realize that different pills different situations affect different people differently? If you’ve had a bad experience with anti-depressants, that doesn’t mean others haven’t had good experiences. You can’t get mad at a show that’s just trying to fight against the stigma of taking medication for mental health, and make the whole thing seem a little less scary through music and comedy. It’s entertainment, and they’re not even saying that it’s gonna be perfect happy sunshine all the time. They talk about the symptoms and side affects and we all know how much they touch on mental illness in this show, and they’re just trying to show the people that do need mental health medication that they shouldn’t be scared, and that they DEFINITELY aren’t alone in this. All I’m saying is, don’t completely disvalue mental health medication when it’s so helpful, useful, and important to so many people.

Clearing things up here on a lot of the comments/critiques The song’s main message is that medication is not a bit deal and people shouldn’t feel ashamed for needing medication. Everything else is window dressing but let’s address some things: 1) the show is saying meds fix everything. Nope! The main character has had a history of bad experiences on meds/meds not working! This is part of the reason she’s resistant to trying new ones. The song even covers that not all meds work for the same people! That the meds she is going to try might not work or might have a side effect she can’t handle. 2) the song claims meds repair neural pathways. Nope! That’s JUST for the dog and doesn’t apply to humans. 3) the song says meds will make you happy and that’s not how anti-depressants work NOPE!!! The song literally says “now we’re on pills and it’s less of a slog”. That points to how anti-depressants help manage the depression. “Less of a slog”, meaning there is still a slog, but it’s manageable now. The line “why should feel crappy about something that makes me happy” it is not saying the pills will make her happy, it’s about how she felt shitty and apprehensive about trying new meds when they could help her and she shouldn’t feel bad about that!

Back in high school I was impulsive in romantic relationships and did a lot of "crazy" things, and this show helped me see that it was connected to my depression, disordered eating, anxiety, and all the abuse and trauma in my life. Therapy did help me so much in dealing with those things and it followed that I stopped acting "crazy." Meds are there to make it easier on you so you don't have to suffer and struggle through things so much, and it's good to hear the de-stigmatizing message of this song.

this is old but completely inaccurate. what ssris (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) do is prevent reuptake, the process of your neurons essentially reabsorbing serotonin so the serotonin stays in the space between the neurons (the synapse) and can work for longer. depression is an imbalance. essentially, depressed people have less serotonin than they should. in order to negate that, they take ssris. think of it as non-depressed people having homemade serotonin and depressed people don't so they get store bought

One of the great parts of this show is Dr. Akopian’s journey in dealing with Rebecca. In the start, she’s questioning if she should even continue with Rebecca due to her consistent lack of progress, and in season 4, as Rebecca begins to accept her issues, she’s happier, more positive and always delighted by Rebecca’s growth and development. Her investment and consistency in helping Rebecca are a big part in destigmatising therapy for me and allowing you to trust in a professional.

It’s so-so not a big deal! It’s completely, 100% your choice, but if you trust your therapist enough to share your deepest thoughts and feelings with them, and to trust the rest of their advice, then maybe you can trust them about this, too, and give the meds a try? You are so strong. But you don’t have to do it all on your own anymore.

same, i'm still trying the right thing for me. because of my high blood pressure and ptsd, welbutrin gave me terrible nightmares and interacted horribly with my other meds, and the next one they offered up had a "minor" chance of weight gain- when i researched it, the "minor" seemed a lot more common and long-lasting. This wouldn't be a problem if i was a skinny sort, but i'm not, and my gimp leg depends on me being lighter so that it lasts longer before I need a replacement. so. I'm still looking.

@@basilmemories Finding the right medication is SO difficult. I had quite a lot of success with Celexa early on. That helped me for quite a long time actually. Welbutrin made me gain weight sadly. Now, in my friend's environment I've experienced talking about psych meds like it's some cool shit, or just casually being prescribed xanax instead of facing the problem to its core. This generation glorifies drug use and abuse of prescription pills, every song on the radio is about xanax or painkillers, I am sick of this drug-pushing culture. You shouldn't feel bad for using and being prescribed but also keep an open mind. The research is very limited on psych meds, we must demand a better system.

This number made it really easy for me to start taking meds. I was so scared for all the reason people usually get, afraid it's going to change you, that you'll have a bad reaction. But the chef coming in and everyone encouraging him to keep trying, change dosage, try new meds, really made the process easy for me. I had to jump around and change my dosage but this song had me keep going instead of giving up. Anti-depressants don't make you happy. It makes you ABLE to feel happy. As you keep getting used to it, you can wean off. Without them, I couldn't even get to the point of practicing feeling happy.

How far we've come. I remember in high school (the 90s) when my friend was dating a girl, who's mom was protective. Group didn't like the girl much either. Found out her mom was on Prozac, and I remember my group making fun of her mom, in an "ohh that explains it" kind of way. Fast forward, now I'm a parent, who is on Sertraline. I am protective yes, but get praised for it, and I talk openly about taking anti-depressants if it comes up somehow in conversation, which it sometimes does. Son still has plenty of friends and so do I. Now this gem of a show makes many more like me and that girl's mom feel less alone. I'd call that progress.

Look, all I know is that therapy, and mindfulness, and yoga didnt help me not become suicidal without medication. Now that I'm on the proper medication, I can actually function. And have a job. And take care of my animals. And not want to die all the time. It took a long time to find the right medication combo, 6 years in fact. Probably about 30 different medications, 200+ dosage adjustments, and 3 hospital stays. But I've been stable over a year and want to live. I'm not saying everyone needs medication, far from it. But for some of us it's a life saver. And even if it does have long term side effects down the road, I'm not going to die from killing myself in the present.
