I have a pair of Gap flip flops that are 22 years old 😱 I myself don't even know how it's possible but I bought them when I was 25 and I'm now 47! I use them every summer and I think it prouves that plastic can last forever. In this case it's a pretty good thing because I dind't buy any other summer flip flops for 22 years but it's maybe an exception. I also don't understand all this psychosis for summer or other season's products since everything we have in our houses is so versatile... I mean a bag is a bag! 🤷‍♀😉

As a Brazilian person it's so weird to see flip flops being considered disposable and not usable. I use flip flops every day around the house, to go somewhere near (do groceries,etc), to go to the beach, to take a shower, and mine usually lasts a couple of years. The one I have right now I have been using every day for the last 3 years, so I think that they are quite durable. Of course in places where it makes actual cold you can't use them year round, but that would just probably extend their lifetime, no?

Your flip-flops are built different. I was given a pair of Brazilian flip flops as a gift. As an American, that was a weird thing to receive as a gift, because our flip flops fall apart after one summer if you’re lucky so it’s not really a “gift” type of item. Those Brazilian flip flops lasted me SEVEN YEARS of very regular, year round wearing. American flip flops are basically disposable, so the Brazilian ones blew my mind. I miss them.

Can you recommend a brand that will last?? I basically live in flip flops, but the combination of salt water (spending a lot of time on boats) and everyday wear in very hot weather, kills even "namebrand" flip flops :(

I'm also adding plastic summery home wares like wine glasses, and dinner sets to the anti-haul. I walked through Home Sense the other day and there was an entire aisle of plastic dinner sets and fancy wine goblets in about ten different colours, being advertised as garden party dinner ware. It was absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary.

5:04 I didn't know that the term "fast sun glasses" is used outside of Finland. 😅 We call them "nopeet lasit." Although for us the meaning doesn't come from the shades being sporty fast, but more from those types of shades being used by drug users (especially amfetamine, which is often called "spiidi" as in speed. The drug makes ones eyes really sensitive to the light, so the user needs to use some sort of shades.) One reason for the name "nopeet" is also that drug users steal a lot of bikes, and you need to be fast, as in "nopee" to do that. There's probably even more stuff behind this name, this is just from the top of my head. I love the etymology of street slang, it's such a wonderfully weird world. The overall "nopee aesthetic" is quite wild, and it's been coming back in fashion. Tribals, flame everything, loose hoodies, that late 90´s street style. Right now you can't always be sure whether the style is being rocked as a necessity or as a zoomer fashion statement. 😂 You're welcome, I guess... 🤐

While I hear you on the acrylic cups... I did recently buy acrylic bowls for use at home. With chronic pain, I'm prone to dropping items whenever I have a cramp or shooting pain in my hands, and it felt more sustainable to use acrylic bowls (that don't shatter when dropped) than to continuously buy ceramic bowls whenever I'd inevitably drop another one. If you have a sustainable alternative, I'd genuinely love to know, though! :D

Beach bag... For as long as I can remember my parents have had this floral sportbag that is only used for the beach. Nothing else. If our things couldn't fit in it - something got left behind. If we needed the bag for some other trip and not to the beach - too bad. The bag with flowers was off limit. So yeah. You don't need a special bag for the beach. Any bag could do. But if you're planning to have a designated beach bag - make sure it lasts a good 35+ years.

As a mother of two young girls, here is my buzzkill of a list of summer kids items I am anti-hauling: water balloons, little plastic bubbles containers (buy them once, make the solution homemade and refill them. We've used the same bubble wands for years), little cheap summer water toys (little plastic squirt guns from the dollar store that break after 1 use), NEW water shoes and goggles...thrift stores are full of them, did I say water balloons? Yeah, my girls know I hate them and they aren't allowed on our property. 😅

There are reusable versions of water balloons - usually knitted yarn that you soak in water - if your girls want to have a sustainable water balloon fight. But I agree, they’re not super necessary. Just run through a sprinkler if you want to get wet

I have a pair of extremely 'ugly' sandals that I bought over 10 years ago - still going strong and I've used them every summer since I was a teenager. Similarly, my Kleen Kanteen steel pint cup (with a lid that you can sip from or use a reusable straw in) has come with me to festivals, gigs, and even theme parks - holding cider, iced coffee, and slushies for 8 years! Making what we already have last, and buying sustainably when we need to replace things saves so much money and waste.
@AthynVixen

LOVE that you get to use your pint cup. I bought a UK made one specifically to use in places where plastic cups are given out but in the UK I cannot find a single place that will actually let you use them even though there is no way I am trying to con people out of extra amounts as both pint and half pints are clearly marked and incorporated in the design
@kaiajasmine
@kaiajasmine Жыл бұрын
@@AthynVixenI've definitely been turned down plenty of times with my pint cup - I usually just say 'thanks, but I won't have anything then' if they won't take my reusable - if anything it might make the company reconsider if enough people would rather go without than use disposables! I'm also careful to make sure it's really clean and dry to avoid the risk of them refusing due to sanitary reasons.

I also think a more sustainable alternative to disposable film cameras would be to buy a secondhand film point and shoot. If the point is to be trendy and aesthethic then yeah, definitely just edit thr photos on your phone, but if by some chance the point is instead discovering a new art medium in film photography - it is not difficult to find a second hand reusable film camera.

I can’t agree with the beach bag thing, because if you go to the sea, the salty water and salty air can destroy the things you bring. So personally I prefer to go there with a bag that is not too expensive or essential in my everyday life. That way I can keep longer the bags that I care more about. I have to say I have the same beach bag since high school. 😀 Of course I see your point 🙃

Not to kill your buzz but the 80's and 90's are vintage😄 My son dropped his stainless steel water bottle and it broke on the bottom. One of the teachers from his school soldered it back together and it works just fine again👍 When i got married in 1999 we didn't have a photografer but we put disposable cameras on all the tables. Papershoot actually has a non-disposable camera that is relatively affordable and can take the “aesthetic pictures” like the disposable camera. It also uses rechargeable batteries, comes in cardboard upcycled packaging and you can take off the “case” (which is also I think recylclable) and change out the color of the actual camera. I have one and they are actually pretty cool and very lightweight. 13:58

I don't particularly want to defend sheer clothing, but it is réparable! You just have to make it a visible repair. Sew up the hole, and embroider something on top to hide it, for example. I've repaired mesh items this way. Plus embroidery on sheer fabric looks cool imo. It does take a bit more effort than other types of repair, maybe less than swiss darning but more than a patch. Still worth it :) I also learned recently that I had a family member way way back who fixed runs/holes in nylon stockings as part of her job as some kind of seamstress! So even the most impossible sounding fix was actually once done.

6:35 I purchased my plastic (clear) re-usable bubble tea cup instead of glass (bonus purchased from a local business) and has been using it almost every day for half a year (mostly for water) until I accidentally dropped it and broke it. I think as long as you vigorously use it for a very long time that it evens out the footprint used to create it I think it's still justifiable. :) Keep up the great work!

I would do the same especially if it’s a cute plastic one that i can reuse until it breaks cause of my clumsiness. (Dropping a glass one once means it shatters immediately 😂) But also would use it for gigs and festivals cause all of the gigs i went to either a) let you bring in ur stainless steel bottle / tumbler but without any water in it and you’ll have to ask a bar staff for filling it up (not always easy when they’re serving long queues) or b) not let you bring it into the gig itself and you’ll have to leave it in the cloakroom. I don’t know how it works in denmark, but this is common for most uk gigs and festivals. 🥹 even for the small gigs

I disagree a little bit on the merch part. Yes, the amount of Brabie merch is ridiculous and no way there should be that much of it, but merch itself I don't find a bad thing espeially for band merch. Nowadays when people don't buy music in physical form anymore, bands get their revenue basically from live shows and merch. I like to support my favourite bands by buying merch from the shows I attend and then I wear the merch until it basically falls apart. Merch is the only clothes I buy new, I try to buy everything else second hand. Also I found out this summer when selling my clothes in a thrift store, I was able to sell all the pieces of bands' merch I wanted to.

We could take a loooot of pictures without wasting money, that was a revolution. I can understand using classic cameras by people that love photography but disposable? Trends should be according with what we are living nowadays. Plastic and disposable things should not be trends.

I don't buy into the trend of disposable electronics like single use vapes and disopsable cameras. The waste so many resources on circuits and batteries. I studied computer technology and electronics in all 4 years of high school and I found so frustrating to have to deal with disposable pieces of technology when it was wanted to reuse them.

I've never been fond of buying just for the sake of buying. I prefer to source beautifully made, unique items, to wear, to use and to be around. I just don't understand the concept of binge buying. Thank you for the anti -haul video though as it seems that irresponsible companies are still making the garbage items that are targeted at "summer fun".

I HATE things between my toes. I will not now, nor have I ever purchased thongs/flipflops. My grams got me ones at the dollar tree as a child, I hated it and never wore them. I have sensory issues. I only wear cross the top of your foot sandals. I got some Nike doupe slides for my honeymoon in 2021 and those are still the only sandals I wear at the pool and beach, unless in the water, then I have water socks.

I watched Barbie yesterday with my friend and it was a lot of fun. I usually wear dark coloured clothes and don't have pink stuff, the closest it gets I think is a purple t-shirt oh and my light pink barefoot shoes. But I still had a pink shade of semi permanent hair dye (vg and animal cruelty free of) at home, soooo black clothes and pink hair looked pretty darn good 😊🖤

My favorite thing when I'm watching your videos is that I just get ad after ad for temu 🤣 which I know totally isn't your doing but I find it ironic and shows how much hyperconsumerism is advertised in your face all the time

it is good! they’re giving ad revenue to a sustainable creator. just like when a “bad” company sponsors sustainable content, they’re financially investing in sustainability even if it’s just a little. if we watch the ads completely it’ll also suggest to the algorithm that people who use temu might like this video- beat them at their own game!

For the Barbie movie, am I the only one who saw the movie as extremely patronizing, especially when you take into consideration how the movie references capitalism, beauty standards, and sexism in the workplace, but the ceos are still men? The team who approved the movie at Barbie headquarters are still men? The over 100 collaborations they did with companies specifically unethical companies? The cast were all primarily super thin women (apart from a whole 1 version of Barbie with a different body type?) For it felt condescending almost?

Yes yes yess. It was the most overhyped movie of the decade. I don't know how such a basic, digestible way of showcasing feminism got applauded for being a feminist masterpiece. It kinda gave off the vibes of "white, performative feminism" and I have no idea how that got them such critical and mass acclaim.

Wearing body glitter seems ridulous to me. It comes off on everything so a mess to clean and it can't be good for your body.
