A group of American tanks run into some anti-tank guns and have to carefully manouevre to defeat them.
#Fury #BradPitt #Tanks
Fury. April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

@@revol148 The first scene of the movie shows the crew repairing the tank with a dead crewmember in it. Upon returning to the rally point, we learn that Fury is the only tank in their section that didn't get blown to hell. A crewman in another tank who they seem to know is so overcome with fear and shock at the carnage he has witnessed that he blows his own hand off with a grenade to get out of getting sent back into combat (though that was edited out ofthe final cut). As Fury rolls through the camp, trucks are loaded with dead soldiers. Nurses and corpsmen are dumping buckets of blood and used bandages outside a field hospital. The new guy's first job: sponge the blood and skin of the aforementioned dead crewman out of his crew station. Shortly after rolling out, the lead tank in the column cobbled together from the remnants of the otherwise wiped-out battalion gets hit with a Panzerfaust. The crew dies screaming, trapped inside the tank as it's engulfed in flames. Save for the TC, who managed to clamber out of the turret, fall to the ground, and spare himself any further agony by pulling a bullet through his own head. AAAAAAAND that just about covers the first 20 minutes. By the time the movie is over, the frightened FNG who joined the crew in the beginning is the only tanker featured in the whole movie to make it out alive due to a combination of luck, and a merciful young Wehrmacht soldier who pretends not to see him, sparing his life as he hides under the tank waiting for them to leave. It would appear that your snarky, "knowing," cynically clever assessment of this movie was in no way influenced or biased by having actually bothered to watch it. Or any other American-made war movie of the past 25+ years.

My Dad was in the 4th Armored Division, CCA as a Tanker from the Breakout , Bastonge and the 'Rat Race' to the very end. NO WAY those Kraut Anti-Tank guns could miss like that at 200 yards or less. Dad said they were accurate as all get out and ALWAYS had their ranges marked. The Kraut guns were so high velocity and with such tough armor piercing tips, they would not deflect off a Sherman at that range.... Dad said in the whole war he only saw one Kraut round deflect.. Even at a 10 degree angle, they would blow through a Sherman like a hot knife through butter.

The average crew of a 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun could send a shell every 5 seconds (approx.) and had a somewhat good accuracy within 2000 yards (approx.) and a maximum engagement range of 8000 yards (approx.). With a total weight of 1.4 tons the Pak 40 was also pretty heavy and couldn't be manhandled into position, so they were deployed by tractors (usually half-tracks) on an open area further away from the front line and definitively not inside a densely packed tree line.

That's the kind of fact that you often don't see even in RTS video game like Company of Heroes. Some military hardware at that time require extensive motorization like getting towed. As someone with high functioning autism who more than often has no idea what everyone is supposed to do, seeing Norman freak out and break down into tears felt so real. As much as I admire the brotherhood the Navy can bring, I pray to my Lord and Savior that I cannot qualify for the draft. The stress cracking his voice when he shouts “I WAS LOADING THE GUN!!” And the horror in his voice when he’s told to mow down German corpses. He truly deserved to survive this war and the whole crew knew, not to mention two of them died to save him.

In my opinion, Fury does a REALLY good job of depicting what it was like to be a tanker in WW2. They do a really good job of showing what it was like to live that life, how you can just die without warning, have friends that are there one minute, gone the next, and showing the camaraderie that existed between tank crew members. That is what I feel Fury did really well. Unfortunately the combat scenes are very unrealistic, which is really unfortunate considering the potential the movie had, especially since it was using all real tanks, including the last fully functioning Tiger in the world, which has never been done before. I still love it, and still think it’s the best WW2 tank movie out there, but damn I wish it was more historically accurate.

One thing a lot of people Miss is that the Sherman's intended role was for what they're showing here. Taking out Machine Gun Nest and hardened positions. It was not intended to go toe-to-toe in tank battle. A lot of infantrymen came home because the Sherman did its job. And, especially after the wet ammo innovation, tank crew deaths were a fraction of infantry deaths. In many cases, the tank was disabled and the crew escaped and the tank was recovered and put back into service after repairs. It's very dramatic to show a Tiger tank in a defensive location destroying a tank and killing all the crew but it's not the reality.

So I thought I should look it up since my memory is fuzzy and here's the quote "For the US they were incredibly low - 8% of tankers were killed vs 18% of Rifleman. Only 1581 American tankers were killed in all of WW2 - All types of tanks, in all theatres - Adjutant General's Report. 1/3 of those weren't even in the tanks when they died."

@@macmcleod1188 Yeah that’s true 100%, something that I indeed forgot to mention. Sherman was one of the best infantry support tanks, and this scene in specific does do a good job of showing it

American boys' accuracy +100, nazis accuracy -100, all hits missed the targets, even bazzoka guy had to pray a bit before shooting so he scored his own death with a head squashed.

We still have thousands of these tanks in mothball due to how nimble and quick they are, still a formidable tank and would likely be used in some cases against infantry.

That placement of a machine gun in open terrain like 20 meters in front of perfectly fine coverage is not the best tactical placement.
