@@l5098 Stuckmann has lost his charm for me. He seems so much more depressed lately. It's like he doesn't even like film anymore unless it's something anime related. You could say he's becoming more critical, but he's always been critical. He just feels sad and at times even boring now. Not that I hate him or his channel. Those are just my thoughts as a casual fan and a follower of him for around a year or two-three.

You forgot to mention that the reason Defoe had a body double for his wee wee is because although they originally filmed his real wee wee, Vin Trier feared that its MASSIVENESS would distract the audience and they wouldn't believe it was really his. His real wanger would be mistaken for a body double's, so they had to hire a body double with a mid size wanger! Wow!

This is an arty film that has bunches of symbolism. It probably has something to do with the fall of Western Civilasation, or the human condition, or mans inhumanity to man, or climate change, or the music of the spheres, or the mysteries of the cosmos, something like that. Of course that is obvious to true intellectuals, which is not me. I am only aware of these things because of the company I keep. I need to get some new friends. You’re onto something with the comparison of their characters: she being emotional and he being practical. You could compare their juxtaposition to the idea of an id and superego in psychodynamic theory. It’s ironic because the woman’s character even said “Freud is dead” in the film. It almost feels like the whole point of the film is to showcase the constant struggle that occurs between opposing forces in life. Good. Vs Evil, Man Vs Woman, logic vs. emotion, peace vs chaos... Indeed, chaos reigns. But I think this film gives chaos a bad rap. What is chaos? It is spontaneity. Our minds naturally reject spontaneity; our inclination is towards order and patterns. But we forget that we need a little spontaneity in our lives from time to time. It is the only way we change. Willem Defoe’s character even said something along those lines, “the forest was a catalyst for you...” something like that. The only problem is, it’s as if someone took the chaos stick and put it into 10th gear. Things got steadily more chaotic the closer the two got to Eden and the longer they stayed in it. The more I think about this movie, the more questions I have about it. I just watched it for the first time and was looking for a video like this one, well done! Honestly, for me, the ugliest, most grotesque thing I saw in the film was the woman’s habit of abusing her child. Still processing that.

I was eating Chinese takeout while watching this movie. I was just about to take a huge bite of an egg roll dipped in sweet and sour sauce when she crushed his.... I never finished that meal. It’s weird that every person I talk to about this movie is more bothered by the scene of genital mutilation of the opposite sex rather than their own. I’m female and I was much more bothered by the nut crushing and subsequent blood spurt than the snipping of the lady parts. My guy friends are way more bothered by the bean snipping. Strange!

I thought it was interesting that the title is "Antichrist" since there is no mention of the word Christ or any symbol to contrast the prevailing force at work. Here is my sense of the the spiritual themes and breakdown of the "complex" message from of the writer/director. The Grief, Pain, Despair portrayed by the animals characterizes the emotions that create the downward spiral of humanity given natural circumstances. These human feelings are more powerful than other human emotions, and the film presumes that they dictate human spirituality and will always overtake our "higher selves". In other words, because of their direct control over human will, they become a force that prevails over our hope, moral courage, and higher beliefs. We can call this force "chaos" which is triggered by the darkness of fate. "Chaos" is affirmed by dark and frightening predatorial activities exhibited in nature. We see human "good-will" is challenged by the "will to survive" after love of the mother/wife is prevailed over and perverted by grief, pain, and despair. The spiralling pattern set into motion attributes a higher power to chaos personifying it as Satan and characterizing it further it by the natural events of animal feeding. This is all but spelled out by the oracle/fox and the woman's thesis. After the woman makes this philosophical discovery, we see her fate align itself with distopic eden. And chaos empowers her sense grief, pain, and despair until her sensibilities and metal faculties are completely transformed to something completely inhumane/anti humane/anti-chtist/pro-evil/pro-satan/chaotic, and therefore, 'natural'. We also see parallel development transpire in Willem Dafoe's character as he goes from trying to help his wife to trying to numb the pain with sex and eventually enacting a revenge nuanced by extreme pain and pleasure against his wife. For the audience, exposure "therapy" to this distopic eden is a nuanced and disturbing message from the writer. This message conveys with complexity and unoriginally that we are all animals in this kingdom(universe). But, specifically, we are subject to survival, and survival is subject to chaos. And chaos is therefore "king", and humanity will eat itself and each other to survive continue on. And we the audience can only know this to the extent that we ourselves experience the force of these prevailing emotions and circumstances. And I believe he chose this message because, like other complex indie horror films, it appeals to our sense of fear of a higher power or lack thereof. I personally feel like liberties were taken to get sales on this movie and that the darker elements of the movie will feed on your soul. Do not recommend.

I feel like it was a dude who finally discovered how batshit insane his wife went due to his field of work (therapy requires lots of O.T.) demanding time from the family. So MAYBE she did let little Kev take a dive. Maybe he was playing it all in his head to justify his killing of multiple women. Hence the end.

PHEW. Kudos to you for watching this movie (kinda) twice. That's a lot of grief and uh, p a i n to take in. A few years ago I was channel surfing at 2am and landed on this movie. Specifically, the fox scene. I watched for about 5 mins before noping out, skin utterly *crawling*. I'm kinda glad I did, too. I think viewing that one scene with no other context was more singularly disturbing than if I had watched the whole movie. Idk, though. Your reviews make giggle, I love them! I watched this movie years ago when it initially came out. It was a lot to handle but I appreciated the symbolism that was represented. I'm a psychology major so I watch a lot of disturbing movies that have hidden messages. That being said, this movie was definitely disturbing and I will not be watching this again. Lars has a talent but I can never watch his movies more than once.

I watched this movie years ago. I was a teenager pretty sure. Man, I had no clue what was happening, only that I felt low afterwards. This movie really does drag you down-from all the slow dragged out slow mo scenes and heavy metaphor. I’ll watch it again (maybe😂) and see if I can make any sense out of it

Great review, I found your channel and have been binging!!! Love your reviews! I liked the multiple meanings in it (you could go religious, you could go completely psychological, even complete horror still works) I think the openess it left for interpretation was both it's strength and weakness. By not strongly committing to any, you were able to take away more, buuuuut that also makes it pretty confusing and even boring at times. I liked it, I thought it worked, but I also wouldn't rate it highly or recommend it to most people because it's not really meant to be enjoyed, it's just not pleasant to watch. I felt like someone actually put their true feelings of deep grief and depression into this. For ppl who have gone through an extremely sad and emotional experience, especially pertaining to death, I feel like this is a pretty accurate portrayal of the confusion of it all- the emotions always feel bad (sex is good, but it feels bad, being in nature is good, but it feels bad- things once thought good become hollow and haunting). I think the movie portrays that extremely well. Though, I could always be reading into things and it definitely could have been simplified or clarified a little more without losing the heaviness for a better experience.
