There’s so much more to Slavic folklore than Baba Yaga and Russia. Why do authors always focus only on those? So many gods, creatures, demons, myths and countries to choose from.
@Belladonna_Q9 ай бұрын
If the main character was Polish, Chicago would make sense, since there is a big Polonia there. Maybe some of the monsters migrated with people? That would actually be cool, similar premise to American Gods. But Dimitry is a russian name.
@SarahAtHeart9 ай бұрын
@Belladonna_Q I was lucky enough to get an ARC, and that is the plot. The main characters (one of whom is a folklore creature) are children of Polish immigrants (so is Veronica Roth). It's really interesting so far!

Because the writers are generally American with a very loose connection to their antecedents culture.

I agree with you 💯 especially when russia is only like 10% Slavic. But the book in discussion seems to focus on Polish folklore (thanks God) so I will happily give it a try. I would love to read more books based on Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian or Belarusian experiences instead of supporting imperialism and cultural appropriations committed by russians
@moonstonepearl218 ай бұрын
It would be nice to see more of straight up Slavic mythology and not just Slavic folklore. I want to see more stories inspired by the Slavic and proto-Slavic people before there were the modern Slavic countries of Russia, Poland, Ukraine, etc. Most people know so little about those deities and that lore. It deserves more attention.

“Can’t spell tea…” was previously published. I loved it so much, it was very cozy and just a slice of life fantasy. ( the second book was also previously published).

I can't do time loops right now because *Mother of Learning* was too good and has kinda broken the concept for me, otherwise I'd find the Demon Lord one really intriguing. *Can't spell treason without Tea* and *Dragonfruit* sound really good though.

@MELR2169 ай бұрын
You Can’t Spell Treason without Tea sounds amazing!! It was published originally in 2022 so I just ordered it, can’t wait to start. Spin of Fate the ARC was fabulous but nothing like the comp titles, if I’m not mistaken a couple people (including the author?) have talked about how the comps are misleading. I forget what the actual comps the author used were. Also Goddess of the River, got the ARC, it wasn’t Kaikeyi levels of phenomenal since I really adored that book but it was great nonetheless, well worth the read and very interested to see how the author structured the book to mimic a river.

agh i have an arc of both how to become the dark lord & die trying & goddess of the river. i tried how to become the dark lord but the dialogue is way too sarcastic & snappy which i love but its like EVERY SINGLE LINE which kinda got old fast for me. ill prilly give it another try but im not sure yet. super excited for most of these!

May has a ton of good-looking books! From your list, I'm also interested in "How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying"; that seems really fun & my friend who read an ARC really liked it. I am also looking forward to these other May books: - "Keepers of the Stones and Stars" by Michael Barakiva (YA fantasy, queer kids found family + magic gemstone powers!) - "Beastly Beauty" by Jennifer Donnelly (YA fantasy romance, a genderflipped fairy tale retelling) - "The Garden of Delights" by Amal Singh (Adult fantasy, a magical garden that's rotting) - "Looking for Love in All the Haunted Places" by Claire Kann (Adult paranormal romance, a haunted house falls in love with a paranormal investigator and tries to cockblock her budding romance) - "Dreadful" by Caitlin Rozakis (Adult fantasy, a guy wakes up in the Dark Lord's lair with no memories-only oops turns out *he's* the Dark Lord) - "Evocation" by S.T. Gibson (Adult fantasy poly romance, a psychic has to go back to his ex (and the ex's wife) for help in fending off the devil coming to collect his soul)

I got so excited to see Wicked Fox pop up lol. It was one of my favorites from last year and I read the sequel this year. I feel like a lot of people don’t talk about Korean literature nearly enough but I’m probably just not following the people who do. I just read Snowglobe by Park Soyoung and really loved it, can’t wait for the sequel 😩 Also finally got Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White from the library yesterday 😩😩😩 I’d been waiting for it since early January, didn’t even realize when the library got it, and immediately put it on hold when I saw it on their online catalog in mid March and person finally returned it (it was due back March 18 but wasn’t returned until April 2) but very excited and very scared at what’s gonna happen lol
