We have a bridge by our house and when the tide is moving, and you are in anything more than a jon boat, you better be close to 10-15mph (depending on length and width of boat you are in) because if not, it is only about 10-11' wide and about 30' long (with fiberglass bump boards on either side of the pilons. I have hit a few times, nothing too major but when wind and tide aren't playing nice together then it's not easy at all. I have seen $200k boats hit very hard and heard sounds of fiberglass cracking and wives yelling at the same time! Haha. People that try to idle through it always hit because they can't control the bow when the current rips a damn near horseshoe around that bridge. That single spot takes some balls and confidence to do correctly but once a person has the hang of it can pretty much handle most other situations. However, nothing larger than a 42' scarrab can effectively go through it so they have to dock at the marina on the other side of that. All houses in the subdivision behind the bridge have water access and boat slips so it is usually bay boats and a few light offshore vessels.

FYI - this is my husband that is the captain, with decades of experience in docking a boat even much larger than this one. No bow thrusters involved. But before you crackerjacks who slam Captain Harvey Shiflet, you may just want to google search one of the best, most experienced, skilled Captains in the Sportfishing world. His reputation is enviable. And to those of you with the many kind compliments who either know him or were there that memorable day, as was I, thank you!

I've docked multiple large boats as well as smaller boats tons of times and I am by no means the best to ever do it but that merchant mariner credential card that has my name on it says I know something about running a boat. Also I'm happy you can dock you vessel all by yourself because that's something that 90 Percent of boat owners can do with no problem I'm so proud of you 😂 Go to any big time offshore tournament and you will see people racing the clock do this all the time. When 100000 dollars and up is on the line you do what you have to do, I never said this is how you should come up to any marina and do this because that's not true but when it's a big time tourny and big money is on the line this happens all the time I've seen it a bunch

This was at the edisto island marina during the Governors cup. Captain did an excellent job. The current rips threw that marina and the wind coming off the condo makes it worse. I’ve docked here and watched many others dock. It’ll humble all but the best because you can tell how fast the current is.

SolOmoN320 those boats are very well maintained plus they are made for these type of quick maneuvers for backing down on massive marlin. PLUS this was during the edisto govt cup billfish series and they had a kill fish on board with 3mins to weight it before it was disqualified. So if you had a 100k fish onboard that was about to be worth zero wouldn’t you be backing down like a cowboy??

If no one is around and you are not going to toast some other boat or stationary object then be the man but in my experience it's just plain stupid to operate a boat in this fashion. (bass boat experience set aside - 100' long by 18 deep w 6k hp)

A sports fisher is no motor yacht like what ever vessel was 100ft with a draft of 18ft?? You sure you didn’t mean the beam is 18ft? And look man I didn’t mean to insult you but I know Harvey well and I’ve grown up my entire life on these sports fishers fishing all over. I was even on the game changer when we set the world record for marlin caught in a day in Mexico. If you want to see real docking skills watch a commercial fisherman with a single screw boat and no thrusters dock. No engines revving no dockside line handlers and no drama. You may have to go to New England to find this skill set now.

Why does everyone with radar insist on running it ALL THE TIME? Last time I checked, radar emitted harmful radiation. Yet, I see guys pull their boats up to crowded restaurant docks, and its spinning away. Nuts and ovaries be dammed.

Citing documentation from www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesFAQ#0.3_11 Radar is not required on vessels under 1600 GT (33 CFR 164.35), however, Rule 7 states that proper use shall be made of radar equipment if fitted and operational. In other words, whoever has one must use it. The Navigation Rules are not meant to discourage the use of any device, rather they expect prudent mariners to avail themselves of all available means appropriate...as to make full appraisal of the situation (Rule 5), e.g. the use of radar. At issue is whether the use of radar is appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and that is a determination made by the Master; and, ultimately decided by a trier of fact. Should you be in a collision how would a judge/jury rule on your contention that the use of radar was impracticable (due to electrical drain, crew shortages, etc.)? Also, if a collision does occur, then there was obviously a risk of collision beforehand. Could the determination of that risk have been made sooner with the use of radar? It is difficult to answer such questions because the circumstances of each case are different. More importantly, remember that Rule 7 specifies that assumptions shall not be made on the basis of scanty information, especially scanty radar information.
