ANTIETAM, Mini-series; 4/8: “The Battle of South Mountain”

When Robert E. Lee divided his forces in Maryland, he sent nearly half to capture Harpers Ferry, and took most of the rest to Hagerstown in order to connect with his alternate supply base in Winchester. He left Daniel Hill’s division at South Mountain, guarding “the back door”, confident that he would accomplish his new objectives before George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac could threaten his divided army. Things didn’t quite turn out that way for him

Especially in the heat of battle but it's called "volley fire" with maneuvers. Armies in Asia and Europe had employed this tactic centuries before the Civil War.

Neat video. We so often forget the battles for the mountain gaps prior to Antietam, but without these battles, Antietam would never had occurred. The visuals of the combat and the narrations were very good. Thank you for this video.
