I've worked on emergencies where similar "thanks" were given. First of all, it's utterly meaningless. The desk jockeys saying, "[Insert agency here] did a great job" would never thank or praise us directly even if we were the only two people in the room. They're not really thanking the boots on the ground responders, they're covering their own tails; preemptively fluffing themselves. It's meaningless. It's said regardless of actual actions taken. It's a waste of everyone's time. And it's nothing more than a bureaucrat circle-jerk.

I’m not a politician and I’ll say that too. We have no way of knowing if the boy was mentally ill or not, and if he was how do you think he got the gun?? When you're a teen in highschool, a breakup with a girlfriend or boyfriend can seem like the end of the world. An adult should have told this young man that he had his whole life ahead of him.
