Yes it would be a great attic fan! This one I built a box fan for. The box has components in it to provide the fan motor with 3-phase while taking in single-phase 120V. The same could be done for an attic fan.

You did masterful craftsmanship on a truly superior product. Another ILG saved from the landfills! I hope your next project is restoring the 72" behemoth. That's very cool! The line current is unusually high because low speed, high pole count induction motors operate at a lower power factor. Lots of reactive current due to all of those coils. :) I think you'd find that the majority of the cooling airflow through the motor is a result of the low pressure area right behind the fan, right in front of the motor, and not so much due to pressure difference on one side of the wall vs the other. Also, since the power required to drive the fan will vary as the cube of the speed, when running at reduced speed, the motor will be at a radically reduced power level, and thus radically reduced heat rejection. But I do appreciate your precautions with such nice old machinery! I want to build a huge shop that would have a fan like that WAY up high in a gable end!
@davida1hiwaaynet7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I understand about the power factor. I had a somewhat limited selection of VFD's and the only one that seemed adequate is rated for a 3HP modern motor. The next one was massive. It will be interesting to see how it handles the extreme reactive load. Since VFD's use a simulated sine wave made up of a PWM waveform at high frequency, sometimes you have core heating. True inverter-duty motors have very thin laminations, which reduce eddy currents and therefore core losses. That was one of the reasons I wanted to be sure the motor had cooling. Just not sure how the old iron will react to newfangled technology! :) A really badass VFD could push the motor up to a higher speed and that would be darn impressive! Not going to try anything like that, though. :)

@user-hk3ej4hk7m4 жыл бұрын
Nice video! I know this is quite old, but I had an idea. What if you point the cooling tube towards the front of the fan? It doesn't need to be far from the edge, a couple of centimeters should be enough to get some air I think. It will probably increase the noise due to the added turbulence, but it being self cooled would be nice if the smaller blower stops working.

Sid, because it's a three-phase motor, it could be easily reversed. In the case of this one, pushing a button on the VFD could reverse it.

What type of energy transfer is being displayed on here is it Electric Energy+ Heat Energy = Wind Energy or Potential Energy+ Mechanical Energy= Kinetic Energy ? The reason I ask is because when I was in middle school, I did a lot of experimenting with electric motors and fans. I'm just curious.😎😊😉😃😅😆😄😏🙄
@davida1hiwaaynet7 жыл бұрын
Well, lets see.... The power flow is like this.... Electric power (kinetic energy) is supplied to the fan. Transformer converts it from electric energy to magnetic energy, and then back to electric - with some converted to heat, due to inefficiency loss. A very small amount of power is radiated out of the transformer in the form of audible sound waves. VFD (motor controller) regulates the electric power waveform and voltage - with some heat loss. The VFD indicator lamp radiates some of the power away as light energy, but this is very small. Motor converts electric power to magnetic power, then to mechanical rotational power - with some heat loss. All of this is different forms of kinetic energy. A very small amount of power is radiated out of the motor in the form of audible sound waves. The fan blade is taking the mechanical power from the motor, and imparting it to the air, by contacting the air and pushing it forward. The air has some friction , so there is some slight loss in the form of heat. FInally, the air strikes other objects in the building, causing turbulence and more friction, leading, eventually, to ALL of the kinetic energy being converted into heat in the air. So, in the end, it's all kinetic energy from the electric power arriving at the fan, through the entire process, and ending up as heat by the time the air moved by the fan finally comes to rest again.

I'm going to buy a big old powerful killer fan, then I'm going to underpower it, slow it down and it will be so exciting I'll make a KZbin video about it. When everybody else is putting K-Mart fan blades on 10 horsepower motors and risking life I'm going to set my industrial fan to walking speed. Is this called a poor life decision.
@davida1hiwaaynet3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I intend to keep this fan in use for decades, as a useful machine in my workshop. Destruction videos are like the crack cocaine or meth of social media. They get a massive amount of views and attention then for a short time; then people forget about them. So the perpetrator has to locate more things to destroy to make another video. I certainly don't condone nor promote that sort of behavior.
