Shocking! I have an old Ericsson phone on my wall. Hand crank, made in England. Oak case. Near mint condition on the inside. Model N.16143 (1932, I think). About 20 years ago, I was able to shock myself by turning the crank, but every attempt since then failed. After watching your video, however, I managed to easily get shocked on my first go. Ouch! Yay! Thank you. I zapped my son when he got out of bed looking groggy, ha ha! Now I have hooked up the bell, and when I turn the handle, the bell rings, for perhaps the first time in at least 50 years. Oh, and I figured out that two tiny little funnel things going to tubes are for oiling the mechanism. I popped two drops of oil in each, and it works more smoothly. Wonderful! Thank you so much.

I bought an old fashion stick telephone including a magneto within a box that cranks. I didn’t understand how it worked until now, so thank you very much. Dennis, Phoenix,AZ

I'd love to see it's waveform on an oscilloscope! I used to have a similar one when I was in highschool. Unfortunately it got lost when I moved away from home. I showed it to my physics teacher and he had the whole class line up in a circle and hold hands, with the two students on the ends touching the terminals. Then he cranked it and zapped is all. Fun fun fun! I really wish I still had it.

Thanks for the demo and explanation. I have a similar (earlier) stromberg carlson 5-bar magneto that doesn't (yet) put out any voltage. But I'm working on it. One of the 5 magnets is broken, and I plan to repair it with some black epoxy. Lots of restoration needed.

You'e very welcome, glad you liked it. I should really do an updated video on this magneto and phone itself. Does yours have the brass nameplate? Those look the best in my opinion while mine is slightly newer and is stamped. Still nice though. Hope you can get yours going! Make sure to check the magnets for magnetism and use an ohm meter to check the integrity of the coil. If the coil is good and the magnets have magnetism, it should put out voltage. If the epoxy doesn't hold, you may be able to find a parts magneto to steal a magnet off of. :)

@@docbrownsradiolab1220 The nameplate on my magneto is a casting, silver colored, maybe zinc? Some of the magnets have magnetism (trapped a steel screw). I will check the coil for continuity. I watched a couple of other videos to get an idea what the measured output voltage should be. Lots of cleanup to do. I may be able to re-magnetize some of the bars. Thanks for the advice.

@@tpobrienjr I see, I didn't know Stromberg-Carlson made cast nameplates that weren't brass. I've seen some of the early brass plates but never a zinc one. The slightly newer ones like mine have a stamped nameplate. I believe mine is from 1903. These usually put out anywhere from 60-100+ volts depending on cranking speed and magnet strength. You're welcome, I hope your magneto project goes well. Is it for a complete phone you are working with or just the magneto?

@@docbrownsradiolab1220 I have the complete phone. Somebody drilled holes in the box to accommodate a speaker (for a radio), so the box needs some repair. I've replaced the transmitter cup and the receiver with newer parts. Now will apply some elbow grease!

I just bought an antique crank telephone a couple of days ago. I cleaned the magneto and I think it's turning okay now. But the contacts on the end are confusing me. I'm not sure if I connected it right. Unfortunately, my phone was also missing the crank handle so right now I can't crank the magneto to test it.

Phoney - Western Electric Thanks! I actually did get it figured out eventually. I found another antique wooden phone, and I thought it would be pretty cool to connect them together! (I have to replace the carbon microphone in one of them though). By the way, the magneto in these phones can give you a lot more than a little "tingle"! Out of curiosity, I held wires connected to the L1 and L2 terminals with one hand and cranked the magneto...it gives quite a zap! LOL Not enough to really be dangerous, but definitely a nasty little bite! It will light up an incandescent light bulb too.

WD-40 isn't actually an oil. The same compa y does make oil called 3 in 1 which would be much better suited for lubricating things.

I need to remove my magneto from the oak phone box for cleaning. The handle needs to be removed first to get the magneto out of the oak box. Question: How do I get the handle off the magneto.

it depends on what phone you have. i know our western electric model-317 lets the crank come off, it just takes a bit of muscle.

Sorry, I never was notified of these comments. At least on mine, to remove the handle you simply hold the main gear still while applying counterclockwise force to the handle and it will unthread from the shaft. Hope this helps!

Great video I'd love to get one of those to get worms out of the ground my grandfather had one he would put a rod in the ground it may have been 2 rods and he would hook the wires up and crank it and the worms would come right out of the ground .I remember 1 time a old man let him go fishing in his pound and my grandfather decide to hook it up at the edge of the water he thought it might kill a couple fish that were close by he ended up having to restock the man's pound because he killed every fish in the pound they had a big fish fry but it cost him 300.00 to restock the man's pound lol good video thanks alot it brings back alot of memorys

I got the magneto out successfully. I can clearly see the 3 ports that need to be lubed. I keep hearing to use a dielectric lubricant. Going to get some leads and a light fixture to test it. The main goal is to just clean and lube the entire wooden wall Telephone and get the magneto connected directly to the bells to get them to ring when turning the magneto crank. Question: Let me get this straight, for you to get shocked, what exactly do you have to be touching, and do you "have" to be cranking it at the time to be shocked. Thanks for your helpful video.
@docbrownsradiolab1220
@docbrownsradiolab1220 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got it out. Sorry again for the lack of response. In order to receive a shock, you must be touching the output terminals on the back, where the voltage is present. You must be cranking it in order to get a shock. When you aren't cranking, there is no voltage or shock risk present.
