Hi Scout, apologies for no note in the package And causing all the confusion I thought I had put one in, for this tool I think the black was the perfect colour, AWSOME restoration, keep them coming, Monday Wednesday and Fridays are the highlights of my week and. probably for most of you subscribers.

Great restoration. I have recently purchased a set of ornate saw set pliers, identical to the CK set, manufactured by Ahrems, a German manufacturer of tools, based in Wuppertal, Germany. They manufactured a range of tools, including wood planes, pliers, wrenches and knives, was distributing tools, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. A very interesting history of this family owned company started by Ewald Ahrem's (1870 - 1953) I have an antique wooden wood plane and the pliers that I am in the process of cleaning up. Ewalds son, William Ewald Ahrem (1902 - 1967), became a partner to the company in 1930 and continued running the company until his death in 1967. Your restoration technique will help with the clean up of my Ahrem's saw set. Thank you for sharing.

Congratulations John on 20K. You're so right about the quality of older tools and the over-the-top embellishments. Here in the UK we still have many of the old steam tools, many restored beautifully and on show & working. Beam engines with columns of cast iron decorated with capitals copied from Roman stone architecture. There was romance in the iron, once upon a time...

Keith- Sometimes I look at old Victorian homes and think how they didn’t skimp on anything, then I look around at what they make today and think they skimp on everything!! 😂👍
@negotiableaffections4 жыл бұрын
@@ScoutCrafter As a restorer the irony won't be lost on you, that old stuff restores well because of how it was designed and built but modern stuff...if it breaks it sadly can only be thrown away - a repair is often a rebuild almost from scratch and not worth the cost or effort.

Congratulations on the 20K! That saw set came out so beautiful. I miss the era of beautiful tools and everyday objects. The house I grew up in had the old fashioned crystal door knobs and had skeleton keys and the key hole and door knob plate had a similar intricacy to the brass. It was an every day item, and the embellishments were not necessary. But it added a touch of pizazz that still makes me pause whenever I see it to this day, which is very rare now.

Beautiful work and presentation! Thank you for sharing this. For my own taste I would have left the casting marks on there. I love the organic feel and character they bring to the tool. Like a fingerprint. Polished does not speak to me in the same way. For this particular tool. For a pair of scissors I would prefer a completely even surface. The ink on those embellishments is a wonderful touch! I wish we made more tools like this, and the same with buildings. Look at old brickwork and the details we would have and tell me how it compares to concrete. From my father's toolbox I have some of the files used to sharpen a saw but not the setting tool itself. I won't need it either. I use those files for other things now. :-) Much love from Denmark.

Good graphic demonstration on kerf width and saw sets. 😀 Not a big deal but the tool more than likely is only forged instead of cast. They have similar marks but casting steel to get the knurling and the floral designs is tough. Do you remove the springs and screws before immersing in vinegar? I learned the hard way that screws shrink and springs crack if they are in vinegar, muratic acid, even the Evaporust will destroy springs and screws if they are immersed overnight. 😀

Congratulations on 20,000. You wouldn't be there if you weren't providing useful education to alot of people. I've learned alot from your site, and it's all been very enjoyable. I agree with your comment on the elaborate embellishment of these old tools. The manufacturer was proud of his product and he wanted people to notice. I once saw an old steam engine in a museum with supporting beams made of cast iron to look Greek columns. Same "I'm proud" idea. This was an early 19th century engine. Again, congratulations and best wishes for many more subscribers and cool videos.

That's a beautiful saw set for sure. I have a question on another subject about polishing plastics. I recently acquired a couple of braces. One is a millers falls 5010 with handles made from something called permaloid. The other is a 1880's or 1890's ( I think) Davis brace with a handle made from something called " gutta percha". So my question to you or anyone who sees this has anyone had any experience polishing either of these materials? Just looking for advice so I don't screw them up.
@ScoutCrafter4 жыл бұрын
Hello Rick- I never heard of gutta percha but I have worked with permaloid and I hand polished it up nicely. (After hand wet sanding). I read a nice article on it too- workingbyhand.wordpress.com/tag/permaloid/

There's quite a few products that are more "ornate" now - usually done in plastic or with CNC. They just are a different aesthetic, but the details and angles on the robot-looking power tools today would have been a nightmare to put in by hand. That said, it's a beautiful saw set, and I think the black works great on it! Every era of tools has both its beauties as well as pieces you'd think they saved money on by firing the QC department.

@@ScoutCrafter I think I told you before, but I have a vise from about the 20s and the casting was so badly misaligned it's a wonder that it even sold with a 1/16 step on the "anvil". Took a lot of sanding to smooth it out.
@rawbacon4 жыл бұрын
You would think with modern technology there would be more ornate tools instead of less.....You would also think they could program a Robot to Smooth the Forge/Casting Lines..........About a year ago I came upon your channel when I was restoring my Grandfather's Old Anvil Vise (think you had about half as many subs then) last week I restored the last of my Bench Vises (My Craftsman), that's the one I actually use most of the time.
