104 Years Old Cooking Stove Restoration - Why Did They Stop Producing Them?

Rusty Shades Restoration

Күн бұрын

In this video, I restore an old rusty cooking stove made in France in the 1920s. More about the restoration process: It was very challenging but rewarding, as usual, and I learned a lot about cooking stoves! The little stove was in disrepair when I got it. The fuel tank was damaged entirely and couldn't be used anymore; it had a considerable hole that required a lot of skill and patience to repair, as well as many dents and a missing lid. The inside mechanism was utterly gone, too, and I had to rebuild it from scratch. If you want to learn more about this antique French stove, I encourage you to watch this video. When I saw it, even though I was shocked at how bad it looked, full of dents, bends, rust, and burn! The most challenging part was the tank, which had a wick stuck inside and many holes.
After removing the rust, the parts were painted with heat-resistant paint, and I polished all the beautiful brass parts. At the end of the video, I made a test so you can see how it works! More about the camping/cooking stove: It was manufactured by the famous F. VULIN et Cie, Réchaud à pétrole 'AZUREA,' at the beginning of 19 century. I hope I have caught everything, but if you have any questions, you can comment, and I'll get back to you! Cheers! Johnny.

It's my understanding that miniature stoves like this were sales tools. It's a replica of a full-size stove. Door to door salesmen would use this as their demo. If people bought one, the full-size would be delivered later.

No, it's just that such crap is not needed now. It is bulky, uses liquid fuel (kerosene, gasoline) and a fabric cord. Besides that, it is not so axisless compared to modern stoves. Have you ever lit a kerosene lamp? If not, then I will tell you from my own experience - the one who does it for the first time is more likely to burn the entire cord and, on top of everything else, can burn down the house. Well, yes, this type of stove requires a very well ventilated room or a powerful hood, because, if you did not know, burning fabric soaked in kerosene produces a huge amount of smoke (which is visible even on video). Agree - not everyone can afford to buy a hood or build a house with huge windows. Overall, the comment is from the series "ah, but it used to be... and the grass was greener, and the trees were taller." This whole "planned obsolescence" crap is another stupid conspiracy theory that has no basis other than nitpicking to the point that things are not made so "reliable" now that "you buy it once - and it will last until your great-great-great-grandchildren." Yes, things break more often now if not used carefully, but this does not mean that there is some kind of "capitalist conspiracy to rake in more money from the common people."

@@lorig4871 agreed. My dream stove is an O'Keefe and Merritt or Magic Chef from the late 1940s, and the reefer I want is the 1956(?) Kelvinator Foodarama. All built back when appliances were built to endure whatever a family could throw at it.

Nice work. These are sometimes referred to as bachelor grillers, and while the functionality is typically split across toaster ovens, hot plates, and griddles these days, we've never stopped making these beauties. While somewhat uncommon, there are actually a few modern electric models that include a toaster oven, a griddle, and a drip coffee maker.

I think they stopped making them wen the £10 folding portable gas stoves that fit in your pocket come out?.seems very big and chunky too take on a picnic or in your backpack camping.dont get me wronge its a cool idea etc, but its way too complicated and big too carry around and it only fits a small pan or two..a bbq would cook double the amount and its just a bag of coal. Some things get overdesigned and look really good but they not actually pratical, after a week youd just take a folding saw that cant break and cut abit wood too cook with.

Why did they stop producing them? Because a kerosene heater is superior in every way. But they are especially better that when tipped, they auto-extinguish. If this thing is tipped, it's burning the house down. It will spill liquid fuel from the wick holes all over the place. The kerosene heater keeps the fuel in the tank. Only a small amount of fuel is in the part where the wick sits.

Finished piece looks great! :) I've use temperature contrasts to break glass after scoring it. Heat for some seconds with a flame and then straight away to cold water. Snaps perfectly on the scored line. :) I wander if it works with "heat resistant" glass too. The original red paint in probably powder coating, no? (was there powder coating when they made these? 🤔) Anyone know what is the metal sheet on top for?

FYI That heat shield material you were removing contains Asbestos fibers, also when you were heating the galvanized sheeting with the flame this is not good, breathing the fumes from this can give you “metal fume fever” or “zinc shakes.” Inhalation of these fumes can cause long-term health problems, as the lead present in the galvanized steel can vaporize along with the zinc..

I have very good ventilation and always wear a mask while doing such an operation. I know the risks of my job, but thanks for your comment; maybe it can be beneficial to others. Cheers!

@@rustyshadesrestoration 👍👍, Good to know, we come across Asbestos in our job on a regular basis, always good to be aware and remove / dispose of it correctly

New to your chanel. I enjoyed watching, would love to have more explanation of what you’re using and doing and why, and have a question from what someone else brought up: Do you have high heat resistant solder, or is it not close enough to the heat where you used it to be of concern when the stove is heating?

Welcome aboard! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. When you have questions feel free to ask. It is repetitive sometimes so I don't want to bore the folks that are around here for some years now. The soldered parts are far enough, so the solder can't melt. Cheers! Johnny

Here is a video on how to make homemade evaporust. I've done it myself and it is very good and VERY cheap. It is safe to put down the drain. The cost of real evaporust makes it cost prohibitive for large objects. /watch?v=f9kBdJQMPPI
