Thanks to this video I got into an old locked cabinet I haven't been able to get into for many years and found something I looked for for just as many years that I thought was lost and I just cried of joy! Thank you!!

Yep i really like those old locks. when i was in single digits, i was trusted with the house key so i could come home from school and do my home work before my mom got home. She would tie the key around my neck like "dog tags" so i would not loose it. The key looked very much like the old keys you had in your video. thanks very much for sharing. (brought back some good memories)

Hi from NZ I am a Furniture refinisher & have an antique Oak cabinet with doors that are locked & no key. A barrel key is required, I tried many but won’t work. Any advice you could give me that would help to open? Thanx

Do you have any suggestions for opening a wood hinged and two drawer medium size jewelry box from 1972 that is locked and we have lost the small key for it? We remember it being a small barrel style skeleton key? Do you have any suggestions or help you can provide to us?
@selock2 жыл бұрын
Have you checked to see if there are any older locksmith shops in your area that you could take it to? Most little jewelry boxes use a pretty simple key and any locksmith that is familiar with antique locks should be able to at least open it.

I bought an antique china cabinet from a guy that said now don't lose the key. I thought to myself I'm not going to do that!. Well, I lost it.I'm so mad at my self for not duct taping it to the top until after I moved it.Guess I'll try picking it.

citic101 yes :( sometimes you can take them apart and replace the spring which is typically a short piece of flat metal made of spring steel that can often be found at hobby stores. Thanks for watching, if you need any assistance with it let me know

I still can't open my old bookcase door and the key is identical to the ones you have on the video. It was locked for safety while in storage for three months , but the key no longer fits the lock now, so it's stuck shut. It's almost like the barrel of the key keeps getting pushed out again by a spring. I'm tearing my hair out.

I'm sure, for people who aren't in the position of having the lock conveniently removed from the furniture, it would be far more instructive to see how to open the locked door/ drawer without destroying the furniture. Otherwise, it's just entertainment.

Hi, i have the key. But, the "stem" in the lock has snapped off. What can be done? It is for an antique dining sideboard.
@selock3 жыл бұрын
The "stem" as in the post that is in the lock that your hollow key goes into when you insert it? Sometimes you can repair them with a screw tapped in its place and ground down so the post will fit. It really depends on each individual lock and how badly it damaged the case where it came off.

I have a secretary desk that belong to my grandmother. It has a lock on it that the key has to have a shaft. I had a key to a almar that's like that and I put it in there and it turns the lock but it won't open it is a door that just comes up at an angle and locks and then it opens up to make a disc well I got to noticing someone has put deep marks in it trying to pry it open so I assumed they had a key to that wouldn't open it so they try to pry it open while they turn the key there are four or five round deep marks in it where they had a screwdriver up in there trying to pry it open. Do the locks go bad? If so what does one do? There is stuff inside that desk and it hasn't been opened in decades. There's no telling what's in there. I bet it's been 50 years since anybody's had it open or longer. When I open the drawer, thanking the drawer may have to be open for the lock to work the stuff that was in the drawer was very old.

I have two pieces of furniture from an estate sale that are locked. Any suggestions on how to open without destroying them?
@selock7 жыл бұрын
Leslie Zimmers hmm that's a quandary, have you checked around your town to see if there are any older locksmith companies that might still work on them? It's getting hard to find ones that will come out and know how to work on these. I would recommend you call any of your area antique stores and see if they know a locksmith around that works on them. Usually they will be the ones to know. Some ACE hardwares that carry Midwest screws will have a pull out bin in the screw section that has a few of the common "precut" style keys you could try, just don't try to force them by any means. Problem is not knowing whether yours has one of the simpler lock mechanisms that pre-cut keys might open, or if you have a piece with the better quality locks. Are any of the drawers that have locks open?
@lesliezimmers74097 жыл бұрын
They are very large antique amours that have skeleton type key locks. They are too heavy to move or we would try and go through the back. I may try to just buy a bunch of keys and gently try to see if they would work. Maybe I will get lucky. I think it is a good suggestion to see if there is a local locksmith that can maybe pick them. Let me know if you have any other thoughts on maybe solving. I was hoping for a magical skeleton master key that would open anything :) Thanks so much for your prompt reply.
