Thank you, Lock Noob. This is by far the best video for any beginner in lock picking. I had (he said whilst blushing) often wondered how some tools are being used correctly and how do I recognise without a key, what sort of lock I'm facing. You have answered all my questions in a way that is easy-to-understand. Since yesterday, I have watched it three times. There is just so much information. Thanks again, Lock Noob.

A very useful skill to have in an emergency. I watched a few lock picking lawyer videos years ago and tried picking the master lock on my gun safe i had at the time with nothing more than a couple hair pins, had the lock open in less than 60 seconds and was genuinely shocked considering i had never picked a lock before. Ive never bought master locks since

I love the explanation of disc detainers. I've reached a certain level of incompetence with conventional pin tumblers but I've never even tried to pick a disc detainer lock (or other styles such as a dimple lock). I wanted to get to a suitably hopeless level with one lock style before learning how to be useless with other types. This video makes me think I might now be ready to make a mess of a wider range! Thank you.

49:15 The important thing to tell here to the beginners is that you don't apply heavy pressure and try to force counter-rotation with the pick. Instead, you should apply constant pressure to the pin and *carefully release tension* to see if that gets the pin moving. The real logic is to detect the binding pin with the pick, apply some pressure to the pin (basically enough to push the spring for that pin but not move the whole core) and the release the tension enough that the binding doesn't prevent the pin from moving. This accomplishes two things: (1) you don't break picks while trying to force the pins with heavy tension and (2) you can use really heavy tension to make sure you can find a binding pin and not just some crap in the lock. It would be nice to learn this technique from the start so it might be worth mentioning it for the most simple pin tumbler lock at the start of the video, too.

This video is a life-saviour (or at least a hobby-saviour! I decided to start lock-picking only four days ago but the first lock I tried I found super-easy - within two hours, I learnt how to to open it in just 1-2 seconds - so I tried the next one, a tumbler lock, and I've been at for the rest of those four days now. I could open it up by sheer luck every once in a while but I couldn't find a reliable technique. But here I am, 7 minutes into this video and trying that motion and it always works! I'm so happy, I was getting really frustrated!)

I took a 16 penny nail and with my bench grinder made it flat and thinner and then at different spots on one edge of the now flat nail made notches with the edge of the grinder wheel or a file could do it too. The finished product resembled one of those rakes you used here. I then took an old windshield wiper blade and removed the small metal strip from the rubber blade that gives it the its stiffness, cut it to about a seven inch length and just bent it at 90 degrees to leave about a quarter inch long end to use as a tensioner. I went ahead and did it on the other end too but left it just a bit longer to reach a little deeper into the lock if necessary. Now with my hand fashioned rake and tensioner I got out an old Masterlock M1, put in the tensioner , raked it three times and “POOF” it was open. I messed with some other locks and wound up producing several rakes with different shapes of varying lengths and depths and notches. I had some success with a few but it wasn’t as quick or easy as the M1. That one was by far the easiest to pick. Guess they aren’t quite what they’re made out to 24:06 be. I ordered a cheap $8 set of rakes on a keychain from Amazon and I’ve had better luck with my nails than those so far. Continuous use causes the nails to wear and bend a little but I can always make another. I’ve got a huge box of 16 penny nails and new wheels on the grinder. I went through all of this to get a fork lock off my Harley after some wonderful person busted a window and broke into 24:06 my truck and made off with a bunch of keys that I left in the console, some of which were both keys to the bike, the fork lock, spare to my wife’s car, spare to my shop, boat, and many others. Also I had registration papers and titles to every vehicle I own in there and of course those were taken as well. Now I don’t leave an empty matchbook in there. It cost me almost $500 to replace all that stuff and change locks , reprogram fobs etc. I did manage to pick and get the fork lock off. I didn’t want to have to use an angle grinder or something. I’d be replacing chrome and touchin up the paint. It’s kinda funny to ME to watch a video about picking locks when I HATE thieves as much as liars. I catch one and they’re gonna need something much more substantial than a lock pick to have any chance of avoiding a trip to the ER and several doctor’s visits and an avalanche of medical bills after that.

Thank you very much for putting together such a wonderful and informative lock picking video. This is by far the most educational video covering so many different types of locks and techniques to pick them that I've ever seen.

Best range of lock tutorial I've seen especially considering I'm looking to broaden my horizons. I only wish videos like this were around when I was a kid as I started picking locks at around 8 years old starting with the pink combination bicycle lock that you displayed, can you please do one on dial combination locks as I know there are ways to shim these locks not all of them are shimmable thanks and keep up the great work.. PS I don't want to cause any issues but do you know what's up with Bosnian bill as I have not seen him post any videos in some time

Hi, Bosnian Bill retired in order to spend more time with his family. He simply decided that he'd done enough videos.

Soooo helpful! I'm doing research for a lock picking minigame in a video game concept I'm working on, and you've made the perfect video for helping me try to come up with a unique system. I've been at this for 2 hours watching LPL, Bosnian Bill and the Brummie Lock Picker, but this video covers it all :)

I've never seen a video like this. This is the best so far to understand how locks are made and how to defeat them without bolt cutters!

Great video overall! I wish the example disk from the disk detainer lock would have had at least one false gate so you could have explained why those should exist in every disk detainer lock. Of course, many cheap disk detainer locks are missing false gates because manufacturers just don't care about lock security.
