Antique Fabric Scissors Restoration

The other day I spotted this large pair of fabric shears in my local junk shop and I just couldn't walk past them. I've always wanted to make a restoration video and this seemed like a good place to start. I hope you like it. I certainly had fun making it.

Nice work,,, There's a video of a veteran employee of an English scissors maker. They fit the parts by hand - each is individual, and they tweak one blade with a mallet to bend it just so, that when cutting paper it cleanly slices as you close your hand.

Nice restoration. Is there a rule of thumb for how much to tighten the pivot screw?

Thanks for watching! I like to tighten it until there is no play and there is a little bit of resistance when closing the scissors.

mine have some very hardly noticeable drops of some liquid on them , any idea if Oxalic acid can be used to whipeing these tools before restoration? i have some left over, from a bathtub a cleaned before restoration

i did notice, that after soaking in rust removes, it gives a dull grey to steel, does the laundry detergent stop that also?

Soaking the steel in an acid like vinegar etches the surface, which leaves a matte finish. The laundry detergent stops the etching process but doesn’t reverse its effect.
