I will restore these rusty antique handcuffs. I bought this interesting pair of handcuffs for restoration. The handcuffs work but they are really rusty. I will remove the rust with electrolysis and the blue the steel to protect it from rust.
The handcuffs are constructed in a way that they can’t be disassembled. That is probably a very good design for handcuffs because you don’t want the prisoner to be able to easily disassemble them. To remove the rust I put the handcuffs in electrolysis bath. This will loosen the rust. After that the handcuffs were rinsed clean and dried from the water with heat gun. Then I cleaned the handcuffs with acetone. This will help me to get better result during bluing.
For bluing the handcuffs I used my furnace. This could probably be done with torch only but furnace will help me to heat the steel more evenly. If the steel is uneven some parts of the handcuffs might get a bad finish. I heated the handcuffs to a little over 300 degrees Celsius and quenched them in oil. The oil will burn the surface bluish-black color. Which will protect the steel. Link to mk furnaxe upgrade: • Is This the Easiest Fu...

Another derivation is from the hand winder used for hard labour in prison, it had a friction device to make it more difficult to turn and the friction was increased by the turning of a screw. Tightening the screw probably comes from a similar derivation.

@candicejackson7474
@candicejackson7474 4 жыл бұрын
nicolina smith if you’re asking about at around 5 minutes in, those aren’t wood. They’re metal plates that he uses for electrolysis which is very useful in removing rust because of the chemical reaction between the oxygen from the water and the iron from the rust.
@candicejackson7474
@candicejackson7474 4 жыл бұрын
Then it’s a good day since you’ve learned something new! I had a Flying instructor that used to say that. He talked about his electrolysis setup in a prior video but I can’t remember which one. It’s a pretty smart way of getting all that rust off easily!
@Arterexius
@Arterexius 4 жыл бұрын
I'd argue it's the best way to do it, since it requires no hard work and only leaves dirty water with no severe chemicals to clean up, provided that the person knows exactly what he or she does, as it does involve electricity flowing through water. Not exactly a safe method, albeit it's only unsafe as long as the setup is powered. Turn the power off and it's safe again

I follow another restoration channel and you both posted the same thing today. You both did the exact same antique handcuffs and I was so confused to see it twice on my time line at first

Those are for ankles. You can tell by the very long chain, hand cuffs are never that long unless they're a cross system that also binds the neck and legs in the same circuit.

I wonder if these are the first in a series of specific restorations, building up to the jougs, a scold’s bridle, a hanging cage and eventually an iron maiden? I’ve been indoors for far too long... Superb restoration! Especially liked the electrolysis method of oxidation removal.
