Bent Bicyclist's Wrench Multitool Restoration - Restoring Rusty Tools

I will restore this cool wrench multitool designed for bicyclists. It acts also as a tyre tool for removing the tyre of the bicycle. It is jammed and bent. Also the rust makes it very bad to use as a tyre tool because it will damage the wheels. After polishing it will slip between the wheel and tyre a lot easier.
To disassemble the wrench I could have drilled out the pin and then removed the wheel and the lower jaw. But I didn't see any advantage in that compared to the method used. My method was much easier and less likely to cause permanent damage.
After the disassembly I left the parts overnight in rust remover. After this I washed the parts in water. In my old videos I do it with the rust remover but using water will let me use the same rust remover longer.
After the rust was gone I decided to fix the bent shaft. I heated the shaft from the bent area and bent it back while the wrench was in a vise. However this ruined whatever hardening there ever was. Before I could harden the tool I needed to file all the pits and sand it because it would be much more work after the steel is hardened.
After everything was filed I used the furnace I made from a bucket to heat the shaft and hardened it in oil. Forge would be better but I only have a furnace and it seems to work. although it's not optimal because it a little awkward to put items in there.
I didn't want to heat the whole piece with lower jaw and the wheel just to make sure I don't cause any unnecessary damage. After all I only needed to harden the jaw. So I used a small torch to heat the jaw and hardened it in oil as well. After the parts were hardened I started polishing them.
After polishing I used an airbrush to paint the middle of the handle of the wrench. This allowed me to make a fade at the end of the tool rather than a hard edge. This was optimal because there was not a good point to put the hard edge to. Also it's a something I've not seen on tools and it compliments the way the handle turns into a tyre tool. I wasn't sure if it would look good but I think it looks great, especially with the red color and polished metal. Thanks for watching. Please let me know what do you think about it!

Maybe run the rust remover thru a filter of some sort? Coffee filter? Or get elaborate, get a pump, hose run it thru a screw on filter. Restore the rust remover. 🤔😄

Chelating agents have a much longer effective lifespan than acids. One jug of MC-51 or Evapo-rust will outlast a dozen jugs of vinegar, and will also be less harmful to the base metal.

Glass tends to break when exposed to a sharp thermal shock. I think the oil functioned as a heat sink for a while, but once it was hot enough, the border between the glass heated by the oil and the glass not in direct contact with it just couldn't hold it

Not 100% on this, but, fairly sure, re: re-using rust remover, you ought to be able to run the liquid through a basic water filter and get shot of most of the rust particles. I think (but am not certain) that the rust removal agent will keep attacking the loose rust if it's left in there, so gradually loses potency. Either way, right or wrong, I am unable to think of a reason you shouldn't try pouring it through, say, a coffee filter to test the principle. Also, nice bitty-twister. Essentially guaranteed so, forcing myself to remember to actually mention that. :-)

@ss I was all set to swoop in and accuse this of being a stupid question, but then I read it again to check, and, no, that's a freakin' good question. I have no idea but I'd love to see a bucket get put in an FMRI machine. OT, do that before the coffee filter thing, Chap's got a much more interesting idea. Officer thinking, extra biscuit at elevensies.

For the rust remover, try filtering it through cheese cloth or a coffee filter as you pour it back in. I find it helps remove a lot of the larger bits of rust and allows for a few more reuses.

My children had one of those. Of course they got bored of it and forgot it and left it in the car. Weeks/months later, having been silent for ages and forgotten under the car seat, it came to life. Maybe because the batteries were wearing out(?), all it kept on repeating was "Hitler". Not "cute" at all, bloody unsettling to be honest, we had a possessed Furby. Took ages for the thing (it was a "thing" by then), to die completely. Never did fancy replacing the battery after that, so got rid of it....far away.....in an unmarked grave.

I like the red. I think I'd like the grooves in the thing you twist to be red as well to kinda match the two pieces, but that's just me. Awesome job as always!

Maybe you can run the rust remover through a filter or cheese cloth to make it last longer by removing some of the impurities left by the rust removal.

I do wish you'd painted back over the text on the side in black or white, that would have looked lovely

I really like that color for wrenches, I think it's perfect. I'm not artsy at all though, so I would have ended up just painting the whole thing. hehe Also, great job bending that back to the perfect position free-hand!

Top tip try pouring the used rust remover through a coffee filter and you get amazing results when using it during electrolysis

I love the color combo, many tools naturally have some color like red or yellow painted on them. Specially vintage/antique tools. :D Well done!
