Used one years ago when I worked in the tool room at Hardinge. Always wanted one. Then one time I found one on 'the pile' at a scrap yard, and drug it home for like $4. It works, cleaned it up a bit, replaced the light bulb. They are quite handy, I use it from time to time. Mine's a bit newer, probably a 1960's model.

There looks to be a later model on ebay for $145. I am getting better at it with practice

Brings back memories of my electronics class in 1966. We had to make one of those. We wound our own transformer around hand cut laminated iron core and wound the coil on the vibrating 'pencil'. I think I still have it. We need shop classes like that now.

The schools have pretty much shut down shop classes in my area, very sad.

My apprenticeship shop had a smaller unit that worked great. I marked all my tools using it. Later teaching shop at the high school level we had one that connected to a battery for power.

Nice. That’s something I really could use. Mostly for drill bits and taps. I just don’t understand why, on drill bits, they always stamp or engrave the rear of the shank where it’s most likely to be scraped away with use, rather than on the front of the shank, where the chuck or collet rarely reaches. Drives me nuts. And the makers of taps usually do such a lousy job of engraving that it’s often unreadable. To just put the diameter of the tap on one flat and the thread on another would be great. I have an engraver that uses pads and chemicals, plus electricity to do logos and other markings on metal, but it’s not for this purpose. I’ve heard of these but have never seen one. You know, that means I’ll either have to find one,or make my own. It’s really just a multi tap transformer. The working end can be made from a tig tungsten and copper.

I found it marks carbide nicely on the higher setting, It will be nice for marking end mills to new size that I have ground the flutes on, reamers too.

Old ways were better! I have a pencil engraver that vibrates and it is difficult to control.
