More comment on "as is" - over on Baumgartner Restoration he explains that fine art is only retouched to the point of what will standout at viewing distance. In other words, if you can't see the imperfection at two feet, it doesn't get fixed. Holding pottery/china and glass to the much higher standard of chip free, no cracks or crazing doesn't make a lot of sense. That painted ruffle edge Fenton glass dish is a great example. The hand-painting is what the eye will be drawn to, not the chip on the back. Without the paint, the eyes goes to what isn't symmetrical about the ruffle and will see the chip.

I understand the desire to offer "perfect" items - here are some thoughts. If you chip your antique vase at home do you throw it away? Nope you ignore or turn chip side away. How many of you have a family treasure that was glued back together? We love antique.vintage items because they are "old". Life is not kind to old things, they are used, touched and yes get booboos. We ourselves are not perfect, should our spouse get rid of us cause we now have chips, dents or signs of wear? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, very few things in life are actually "perfect". Personally I don't mind a few minor blemishes, they usually don't detract from the overall beauty of the piece. Everything you find is beautiful to someone!

Randy Romines sadly, people do care. I’ve had 2 items returned on eBay stating item not as described. One was a beautiful Blue Ridge sugar bowl with a couple chips on bottom. Mentioned and shown in pictures but she said it wasn’t perfect. I sold it to her for ridiculously low price. Next day a woman, a seller also, returned a beautiful hand mirror that had a few scratches. Also sold cheap. People are expecting low prices for perfect items.

Love the buffalo dish. Maybe it was a barber shop piece? I think Scott with The Old Curiosity Shop once had a white one with a buffalo and his research was that it was in a barber shop, I think. Fun shopping trip!

20:54 I wonder what brand that stein is advertising. Its reminiscent of my Carlsberg serving tray. The ruff on that carved cat looked like old teeth before it came into focus. I was thinking - oh no, she is being distracted and has no idea that she is clutching a handful of someone's great-grandfather's teeth.

I've noticed where you seem to shy away from items where the bottom looks sawed off. I recently found a Kay Finch rabbit, and, checking eBay to find a comparison, I saw one that was filed off on the bottom. I'm not sure if that was some sort of a repair?? Mine has a pronounced rim around the bottom and is glazed and stamped on the bottom. Would that make this one more desirable? Just curious. I am not a reseller. :)

@michellemack6640
@michellemack6640 4 жыл бұрын
Mostly it's just practice and research I think. Signed pieces are always going at a premium. When she's looking at the bottom she is looking for a signature or markings but also how well it is finished, whether it has been fire polished like Murano (clear shiny bottom), or if it's cloudy or rough (usually China or possibly Mexico). Then she also decides by it's whimsical appeal, how colorful, appealing to the eye, etc.

Over the weekend I went to my local antique store to find items to resell and they had tons of items and as I was looking through their fragile items there was glass & pottery items full of chips and cracks, some were beautiful designs but they didn’t have ‘as is’ marked and they wanted $60 for a small (under 4inches) creamer bowl and cookie jars over 15” $500 and a anchor hocking hobnail vase with big chip on the lip and asking $130. Is it me or are they asking too much for something that’s lost all it’s value with the damages?
@somethingoldsomethingnew2199
@somethingoldsomethingnew2199 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they definitely are asking too much if they're damaged like you said. Dealers who don't mark "as is" lose integrity in my opinion because it's dishonest.

My quick way to figure discounts: subtract the amount of the discount from 100. Multiply that number by the original price. For example, $80 with 20% discount. 100-20=80. 8 x 8 = $64. $50 with 40% discount. 100-40=60. 6 x 5 = $40.

6 x 5 = 30. It pays to know your multiplication tables!!
@jerrefreeman6044
@jerrefreeman6044 4 жыл бұрын
@@joycedoss1181 Even quicker easier way to figure discount: Just multiply the % you "will" pay x price of item. So the $80 item with 20% discount means you will pay 80% of $80 = $64 final discounted cost. $50 item with 40% discount means you will pay 60% of $50 = $30 final discounted cost. Less steps in the math. Hope this helps someone.
